Planning Ahead: 2025 San Diego County Fair at the Del Mar Fairgrounds

It’s our founder Todd’s favorite time of year again, as the San Diego County Fair returns to San Diego in 2025.

Visits to the fair are a time-honored tradition for many of us here at Go Visit San Diego because of the amazing live musical acts, thrilling rides, and, of course, the delicious fair food! Some of our great-grandparents have been visiting the fair at its site in Del Mar since its inception in 1936, and we’ve got the pictures to prove it.

When and Where is the San Diego County Fair in 2025?

The fair will open its gates in 2025 on Wednesday, June 11 and run through Sunday, July 6. The fair is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The location of the 2025 fair is the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the traditional home of the event. Some locals even call it the ‘Del Mar Fair’ thanks to its home in the Del Mar neighborhood.

What is the Theme of the San Diego Fair 2025?

Many of us are animal lovers here at Go Visit San Diego, so we’re excited to see this year’s theme at the fair, celebrating our bonds with our furry, feathered, and swimming friends.

The theme for 2025 is centered around turning the dog days of summer into the cat’s meow, and it’s sure to feature plenty of animal-related activities, wild rides, and themed food vendors.

In partnership with the San Diego Humane Society, the 2025 theme for the San Diego Fair, Summer Pet-tacular, will feature pet adoptions, special exhibits and more!

I really can’t wait to see how they bring this one to life!

Family-friendly Fun

It’s worth mentioning that the San Diego Fair is safe and fun for the whole family!

Visiting has become a summer tradition, kicking off a few weeks after Memorial Day and closing for the year right around the fourth of July.

If you’re like me, you’re probably looking for ways to make memories with your family over the summer and the Summer Pet-tacular theme with the carnival games, musical acts, yummy fair food and general high energy of the San Diego County Fair is a fantastic choice. My kids also enjoy a free summer movie in the park, just another great idea for family-friendly fun while your kids are out of school.

Admission, Prices and How to Buy Tickets to the Fair

Purchasing Tickets

Being that this is one of the more popular events in Del Mar, we recommend purchasing your tickets in advance. Doing so will also save you a few bucks!

Tickets are sold by date, and the price ranges from $13 in advance on Wednesday or Thursday to $25 for day of the event ticket purchases on Saturdays and Sundays.

If you’re looking for ways to save on fair admission, consider purchasing a season pass to the fair, or visit on Fridays when youth ages 6 to 12 are free! Kids 5 and under are always free as well.

Is the San Diego Fair Cashless?

A popular question for visitors is, “Is the fair cashless?” Yes, the fair is, for the most part, cashless.

Expect a card-only policy for parking, admission tickets, and carnival rides and games at the San Diego County Fair. Some food vendors may accept cash. You can find cash-to-credit ATMs on-site, but my family tries to plan ahead by bringing our cards and leaving the wallets behind.

Stay Near the Fairgrounds

Our founder Todd always recommends staying at a nearby hotel when attending events like the County Fair. He’s a longtime local that knows the area really well so we always take his advice when it comes to great hotels.

His pick in Del Mar is L'Auberge Del Mar Resort and Spa, which overlooks the sea. Alternately, there are plenty of kid-friendly hotels in San Diego worth checking out.

Save BIG

While not directly connected to the San Diego County Fair, my friends and family that go to the fair each year are often the ones with families that like to do a lot but also care about their budget! I can say that with kids myself, I totally understand this!

I tell them to consider a Go City San Diego pass to save on attraction admission and gear rentals around San Diego, from a day at SeaWorld San Diego in Mission Bay Park, an afternoon at the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park, or even a surfing lesson in La Jolla.

Plus, use our discount code GVSD5OFF at checkout to save even more on an All-Inclusive pass, the best value for your money.

The 5-star, luxury accommodations of L'Auberge Del Mar Resort and Spa make it the perfect fit for any couples' vacation or upscale getaway. Watch as Todd tours its ocean view pool and soothing spa.

Fair Food to Enjoy

For fair favorites like funnel cakes and kettle corn, vendors at the San Diego County Fair have you covered. I’d suggest you have a tasty lunch at our founder Todd’s favorite food vendor, Chicken Charlie's. The Hulu Chicken is delicious if you’re in the mood for Asian or Hawaiian cuisine. They serve teriyaki chicken in a carved-out pineapple half as well.

There will be 115 food vendors attending in 2025, so come with an empty stomach!

Featured Fair Performances

Who Are the Featured Performers at the San Diego County Fair?

Every year, the San Diego County Fair hosts a variety of live performing acts. Both national and local acts are featured as part of the Toyota Summer Concert Series on the Corona Grandstand Stage and Chevrolet Paddock Concert Series.

The performances also make our list of the best summer concerts & outdoor music festivals in San Diego in 2025, so if you like live music like me, make sure to check that article out as well.

This year is no different, and my family is excited to join the fun, enjoying live music, and dancing the night away.

Some of the acts I’m not excited about include:

  • Foreigner – June 12
  • That Arena Rock Show – June 18
  • Sammy Johnson, Iam Tonji and Protoje – June 21
  • Banda MS – June 22
  • Jessie Murph – June 28
  • Jeff Dunham – Artificial Intelligence – July 3
  • Ziggy Marley – July 5

What are Summer Nights at the Sound?

Summer Nights at the Sound are special shows and performances that require a ticket to attend. The good news is that your ticket to a performance also includes same-day admission to the San Diego County Fair.

Highlights for my kids include the laser shows, especially the Pink Floyd Laser Spectacular set for 6:00pm on June 13 and 14. I’m interested in the comedy of Hyprov Improv Under Hypnosis on June 18 at 8:00pm and seeing Cesar Millan, the dog whispers himself, on June 21 at 6:00pm.

Getting There and Parking

The Del Mar Fairground is located at 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd, Del Mar, CA 92014. Traffic getting to this area is tricky and can get pretty backed up. I’d suggest that you leave plenty of time to get there, and plan accordingly.

How Can I Get to the San Diego Fair?

Getting to the San Diego Fair is pretty straightforward using traditional routes. The easiest way to reach the Del Mar Fairgrounds is via I-5. From the Via de la Valle exit, continue west onto Jimmy Durante Boulevard.

For an even easier public transit option, take the COASTER or bus to the Solana Beach COASTER Station. From there, a free shuttle will bring you to the fairgrounds!

Parking Options

There is a paid parking inside and right outside the gates as well as a FREE parking option. Parking purchased 24 hours or more in advance online is discounted. Onsite, parking is payable by credit or debit only (no cash). Prices are:

  • General Parking (Main Gate or Solana Gate): $16 (in advance) - $20 (at gate)
  • Preferred Parking (Preferred Parking Gate): $50 (in advance) - $55 (at gate)
  • Horsepark (2 miles east of the fairgrounds with free shuttle): $10
  • Canyon Crest Academy (5951 Village Center Loop Rd. with free shuttle): FREE

Costs are subject to change and may be higher at the gate.

Additional Tips for Visitors

Your day at the fair is sure to be fun yet exhausting. Make the most of it by following these pro-tips from our team at Go Visit San Diego.

Can You Bring Water to the San Diego County Fair?

It’s important to stay hydrated during the summer in San Diego, and as a result, guests are allowed to bring water to the San Diego County Fair.

The water must be in a sealed, store-bought bottle. Alternatively, you can bring in an empty, refillable bottle. My family does this, and we use the handy refillable water stations to save money on drinks throughout the day.

Bringing Food to the Fair

With so many amazing food vendors, there’s really no reason to bring food to the fair, but it is permitted. Guests can bring a small cooler with personal snacks and lunch.

Just know that the guest services people will check your cooler upon entry to ensure there’s no glass, alcoholic beverages, or sharp utensils.

What Else Is There to Do in Del Mar with My Family?

Del Mar is a beautiful seaside town offering quality restaurants, cafes, and a beautiful Pacific Ocean coastline with beaches just waiting to be explored! I personally think Torrey Pines State Beach with its long sandy coastline and bluffs is a great choice, but if you have your dog with you, Del Mar Dog Beach is another excellent option.

The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is nearby and honestly (and maybe surprisingly to some), it’s a really great time for families. It’s action packed and something my family always enjoys.

If you have young kids and like theme parks, LEGOLAND California, part of the Go City San Diego pass, and the picturesque Carlsbad neighborhood are about 20 minutes to the south.

La Jolla, a neighborhood full of outdoor shopping, family-friendly beaches, and my favorite aquarium in San Diego, the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, is about 15 to 20 by car or rideshare to the south.

Can I Bring My Pet to the Fair?

2025 at the San Diego Fair is a pet-themed event! So I understand why pet owners would want to bring their pet for a picture or two.

But understandably for the safety and enjoyment of all guests, there is a no pet policy. Service animals are however always welcome to attend.

Bonus Tip from Experience: Wear Sunscreen

San Diego is sunny year-round, so make sure to wear sunscreen and to reapply regularly throughout the day so you avoid a painful sunburn.
