Lace Up for the Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K Race Weekend 2026

Starting the 5k at the Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K 2025Pacific Beach Half Marathon Finish Line

I'll be honest with you right up front and say that historically, I haven't been the most consistent runner.

However, as a longtime resident of Pacific Beach, I can tell you from first-hand experience that there's something special about the Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K.

What's So Special About the Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K?

With a scenic coastal course and ocean and bay views, plus early October blue skies and cool temperatures, these races hit just a little differently!

Starting in Mission Bay and ending in Pacific Beach, the point-to-point half marathon is perfect for runners both experienced and new to long distance races. It will feature the 'full-gas energy' for all 13.1 miles as you're treated to a flat, fast course, complete with solid on-course support.

The 5K is VERY unique in that it consists of approximately 1.75 miles of running in the sand and 1.35 miles of running along the boardwalk. Bringing the beach party vibes, you can expect a simple flat up-and-back course along Mission Beach.

When and Where Are the 2026 Races?

The Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K will take place on Saturday, October 3rd and Sunday October 4th, 2026.

The 5K will feature two waves starting at 7:30am and 9:00am. The Kids 1K will start at 10:15am. Both of these races will take place on Saturday. The half marathon will take place on Sunday, starting bright and early at 6:30am.

The 5K and Kids Run 1K will start and finish beachside at 700 Thomas Avenue. The half marathon will start at Crown Point Park in Mission Bay and finish oceanside at 700 Thomas Avenue in Pacific Beach.

Two Days of Racing!

A 'two-day event' means more race heats, activities, and opportunities for families, local businesses, and tourists to be part of the event.

As part of San Diego's growing calendar of incredible 5K & race events, the Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K stands out as a beachside celebration with racing, live music, food, and a strong community vibe. I can say that both courses are classic California - ocean, swaying palm trees, and plenty of sunshine!

Local Tips
Skip the Parking Hassle - Bike to the Race
As a PB local, I always bike to race events. Pacific Beach is super bike-friendly, and you'll avoid the parking nightmare. Just make sure your bike has a headlight for the early morning start, and lock it up near the boardwalk. You'll beat the traffic and get a warm-up in!

Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K Details

The Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K is one of a series of races that take place in my neighborhood of Pacific Beach…and I for one am excited! The energy that comes along with these race weekends is electric.

Let's have a look at some of the race day details.

Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K Course Map 2025
Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K Course Map 2025

Two Day Race & Activity Schedule

The Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K will be a full two-day event.

  • Saturday, October 3rd: 5K (two waves), Kids' Run, and community events including the Pacific Beachfest 2026, with races starting around 7:30am.
  • Sunday, October 4th: Half Marathon kicks off at 6:30am, followed by awards and a beachside party featuring live music, food and drink vendors, and family-friendly activities on the sand.

2026 Course Details

Setting off from Crown Point Shores in Mission Bay, the point-to-point half marathon will take you past Seaworld San Diego, Belmont Park and finally along Mission Beach heading north to the finish line in Pacific Beach.

The 5K course will take runners out-and-back along Mission Beach. It's really cool in that it's about 50% on a hard-packed surface and 50% on the sand.

You can also check out a more detailed map that will show you where along the course you'll find water stations, aid, restrooms and more!

2026 Swag

The swag is back in 2026!

All runners will receive a Pacific Beach tank top, custom finisher medal (with special medals and gifts for Legacy runners), a timing chip, complimentary drink ticket for those 21+, and a really cool pair of SDRC sunnies for those taking part in the half marathon.

Post-Race Celebrations

The fun will continue after the races at a couple post-race partner bars or the Pacific Beachfest Beer Garden. The PB Beer Garden will be the spot to cash in your free Michelob ULTRA, Michelob ULTRA Seltzer or Michelob ULTRA Zero after the 5K on Saturday. They'll open at 9:00am ready to party!

Your options for after the half marathon on Sunday will be the PB Shore Club, Mavericks Beach Club, or 710 Beach Club, all set to be open by 9:30am.

It's About Community & A Good Cause

Something I love about the Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K is that it's NOT just for runners.

The family-friendly event will bring together people from all over San Diego and beyond, all wanting to be part of the run, whether that be to participate or to cheer on the runners as a fan. Everyone is invited to attend!

And as with most 5Ks and half marathons the event also will benefit a great cause! Proceeds will go to 'Discover Pacific Beach', a non-profit that supports the Pacific Beach community, the local beaches and its businesses

Packet Pick Up & Race Weekend Planning

Now that you know about the race options, and possibly have even signed up to participate, let's make sure you're ready for what lies ahead!

2026 Packet Pick-Up

Before the race kicks off, you'll want to pick up your packet which will include your bib (with free post-race drink ticket), shirt, and timing chip. If you're running the half marathon or Surfside Double Shot Challenge, you'll also receive a pair of SDRC sunnies (also known as really sporty sunglasses).

You'll have multiple free packet pick-up options in addition to a 'Mail my Packet' and 'Event Day – Half Marathon' pick up that both will include an additional fee.

5K/Kid's Run Packet Pick-Up Options

You'll have two options to pick up your 5K or Kids Run packet. Both options are free!

You can stop by Road Runner Sports at '5553 Copley Dr, San Diego' on Friday October 2nd, 2026 from 11:00am until 6:00pm.

You can also pick up your packet on race day at the Pacific Beach Boardwalk at 4300 Ocean Blvd, San Diego. Times for race day pick up will be Saturday, October 3rd from 6:30am until 7:30am (5K early wave), 7:30am until 9:00am (5K main wave), and 9:00am until 10:30am (Kids Run).

If you're picking up for a friend, just be sure to bring a copy of their photo ID or their confirmation QR code.

Half Marathon Packet Pick-Up Options

As a half marathon participant, you'll have multiple options for picking up your packet before the race.

Just like the 5K and Kids Run, you too can stop by Road Runner Sports at '5553 Copley Dr, San Diego' on Friday October 2nd, 2026 from 11:00am until 6:00pm.

If you want to scout out the course the day before your race, you can grab your packet at the same time from the Pacific Beach Boardwalk at 4300 Ocean Blvd, San Diego from 9:00am until 2:00pm. These first two options are free!

If you'd prefer to pick up your packet on race day, there will be an option for that as well. You can grab your bib at the start line at Crown Point Park, Mission Bay on Sunday, October 4th, 2026 from 5:30am until 6:30am. Your tank top can be picked up at the finish line. With such an early start, just know that there's a small $25 fee for this option.

'Mail My Packet' Option

If you'd prefer to have your packet mailed to you, there is an option for just that!

For $17.50 per packet ($27.50 for a household) with a deadline of September 15th, 2026, the organization will mail your packet directly to your address of choice!

Make a Long Weekend Out of the Race!

If you're visiting from outside the area for race weekend or don't live in PB, I think it'd be really awesome to turn your race into a mini vacation.

As a longtime resident of Pacific Beach myself, I can tell you that my neighborhood has a lot to offer! From the boardwalk and pier to golden Pacific Beach beaches, coffee shops and an authentic San Diego vibe, I personally think there are few places 'more San Diego' than the location of the Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K.

Where to Stay Near the Race?

If you're planning to attend both days, the Pacific Beach area has some pretty amazing local accommodations. My favorite nearby hotels include The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa in and the Tower23 Hotel.

The 4-star, beachfront Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is about a 10-minute walk to the start line offering comfortable rooms, a warm pool, and an incredible spa.

When my friends and family need a place to stay in Pacific Beach, the Tower23 Hotel is one of my go-tos. It features ocean views, spacious rooms, a delicious restaurant, and a laidback San Diego vibe all less than 10 minutes by foot (or running shoes) from where the races kick off!

The Ultimate Race Weekend – Planned for You!

While the races will be incredible, it'd be awesome if you got to experience more of the area, whether that be for a long weekend, a few extra days, a week, or more!

With that in mind, I'd love to share our FREE 7-day plan with you where we introduce San Diego in a new and exciting way. Even better, we just launched a custom itinerary service where our team takes their local knowledge and builds you an itinerary complete with things like where we think you should consider staying, our favorite restaurants, things we think you should try (in addition to running in the PB Half Marathon & 5K of course), tips you'll only get from veteran locals, and more!

We're currently offering versions starting with a FREE 48-hour schedule, up to a fully customized option that even includes a call with me! During the call, I'll be sure to ask you about your travel style, group, and must-haves and you can also ask me any questions you might have! It's just that easy!

One More Quick Local Tip

As one more quick tip before we get back to the race weekend fun, if you're up for adding a few attractions or activities to your race weekend, a Go City San Diego pass is worth checking out. It's a great deal if you're looking for things to do in San Diego, like visiting local favorites SeaWorld San Diego and the USS Midway Museum. Both are just a short drive from Pacific Beach and are included as part of the pass.

Using the discount code GVSD5OFF will save you just a little more on your fun-filled passes.

Race Day Logistics

Race Day logistics can be tough!

With multiple road closures and thousands of runners descending on Pacific Beach in the early hours, you'll want to be sure to have a race day plan for arriving and departing the race, being sure to leave enough time to get to the start line before the race begins.

Where Can I Park on Race Day?

The area is super walkable, but if you do drive, parking will be limited. Here are a few options I recommend:

  • Street parking near the start and finish lines in Pacific Beach and Mission Bay will be an option.
  • Paid parking lots around Pacific Beach, like near Crown Point Park (start of the half marathon) and along Mission Boulevard. All parking will fill up quickly on race weekend, so be sure to arrive early!
  • For the half marathon only, you can park near the finish line at 801 Grand Ave., San Diego and hop-on the shuttle which will run from 5:00am until 5:50am on race day.

Race Weekend Road Closures

In preparation for safe and car free races, there will be a number of full or partial road closures as well as temporary no parking zones.

The biggest closures will be Thomas Ave. between Mission Blvd. & Ocean Blvd. and Ocean Blvd between Thomas Ave. & Grand Ave both from Friday, October 2nd at 9:00am until Sunday, October 4th at 12:00pm.

More Race Day Transportation Options

If it was me and I wasn't staying within walking distance of the races, I'd probably go with a San Diego rideshare service instead of driving to avoid parking hassles.

You'll want to ask your driver to drop you off at the start line at Crown Point Shores for the half marathon or near 700 Thomas Ave for the 5K.

If you're within biking distance and have a headlight on your bike, that would be another very good way to get to the races!

Race Like a Pro: Tips for a Great Day

Whether you're racing or cheering, a little planning will go a long way toward making your experience unforgettable.

How Do I Prepare for a Half Marathon?

I'm not an expert by any means, but I know that if you want to run the half marathon, 8 to 10 weeks of training is ideal. Even late in the game, I'd suggest that you plan a few training days pre-race.

I mix long runs, rest days, and shorter tempo runs to build endurance. Bike rides along Mission Bay or yoga on the beach help me stay loose too.

Race week, I stick with familiar protein packed meals, hydrate early, and try to get enough sleep.

Last Minute Updates

If you want last-minute updates, be sure to sign up for the race newsletter where the organization itself will share the latest information and updates about the races.

How's the Weather in Pacific Beach in October?

The 2026 events will take place in early October's mild, coastal San Diego weather. I will dress in layers and bring a light jacket, so I'd suggest that you do the same.

Also, make sure not to forget to wear sunscreen!

What to Pack & Race Day Tips

Bring your race bib, hydration gear, phone chargers, and comfy post-race clothes.

Spectators should pack sun protection and beach chairs.

No pets (in the race or along the beach according to San Diego County regulations) or large bags will be allowed. Pro tip: stick to the provided clear gear check bags.

I've seen strollers in the half marathon. Given that the 5K includes sand a one small stair crossing, it's highly recommended that you not run it with a stroller.

Where is the Best Place to Watch the Race as a Spectator?

I live in Pacific Beach so I know the area very well. Honestly, anywhere along the route will be perfect to watch the runners and be part of the action.

For my family, they usually watch near the finish line on Thomas Avenue as I run with my wife. As a bonus tip, nearby cafés like Better Buzz Coffee are our go-tos after the race, just know that on race day, they will be extra busy!
