Warm Water Jetty Beach in Carlsbad gets its name from the temperate waters that flow between the many rock jetties located in this area. The water is heated by the nearby Carlsbad Power Plant, which is situated directly behind the beach itself. In fact, the beach is very easy to identify by first-time visitors coming from all directions thanks to the towering smokestack that marks the plant.

Located in South Carlsbad State Beach, this beach is much-loved by local surfers for the great conditions it offers much of the year. The favorable conditions make the beach an excellent destination for many other outdoor enthusiasts, whether you're traveling on your own, with friends, with family, or significant others looking for a romantic getaway. The beach is also part of an essential ecological reserve dedicated to protecting resources and wildlife that populate the area.

While there are plenty of things to do during your visit, there's also so much to see. You can view the scenic waters and cliffs from the many walkways and paths located throughout the area, and there's much natural beauty on display when hiking along the nearby trails.

Why This Beach Is So Loved

Surfing at Warm Water Jetty Beach

While there are many fun activities to partake in at this beach, it's best known for its quality surfing. The temperate, comfortable water has given this beach an alternate name of Warm Waters Beach by locals and visitors alike. When it comes to skill, it's recommended for experienced surfers due to the more challenging waves and conditions, which are categorized as regional classic in terms of wave quality.

The normal length of waves at the beach is 150 to 450 feet, while on a good day wave length is classed as long, ranging from 450 to 900 feet depending on the particular day. When it comes to wave frequency, breaks should be expected. On average, waves can be described as fast and powerful, which is why experienced surfers are best suited to these surf conditions.

Local Tips
Did you know?
The water at Warm Water Jetty Beach is actually warmer than the normal ocean temperature due to the power plant using ocean water to cool down the steam used to make electricity.

The wave type is categorized as sand-bar. The wind direction is east, northeast, while the swell direction is north, northwest, and west. During the week the beach is less occupied, but expect a crowd when visiting during the weekend.

Other Things to Do at Warm Water Beach

If you're interested in a more relaxing experience while visiting the beach, there is ample opportunity for beachcombing, which is a great activity for families.

Agua Hedionda Lagoon sits between two of the jetties, which is home to an ecological reserve, as well as an outdoor water recreation area.
