San Diego Zoo Nighttime Zoo: A Summer Celebration

The San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park is the #1 attraction in San Diego, and for good reason! With hundreds of animals from giraffes and pandas to koalas, birds and more, the park offers a family-friendly, educational experience that is special with each visit, and all of this is during the day!

So, when the San Diego Zoo holds a seasonal event like this summer's Nighttime Zoo, or a special engagement like the annual Food, Wine & Brew 2026 at the San Diego Zoo which took place at the beginning of May, we're all in!

Our founder Todd, a San Diego Zoo regular, tells me that the Nighttime Zoo event seems to draw out a more relaxed crowd, and it's fun to see families and friends enjoying the park in a new way. The performers and evening parades also add an extra spark. He really feels that there's just something special at the event as the zoo comes to life in a different light.

When is the Nighttime Zoo Event Being Held in 2026?

The summer nighttime event at the San Diego Zoo will start on Saturday, May 23rd (exclusive preview Friday, May 22nd for members) and last until Sunday, August 9th, 2026.

The special activities and entertainment will begin daily at 3:30pm with the exception of June 13th and July 9th, when there will not be any events. During the Nighttime Zoo event, the park will be open each day from 9:00am until 8:00pm.

A Final Year of Nighttime Zoo in 2026

If you're one of the lucky ones like our team at Go Visit San Diego that have visited the San Diego Zoo over the summer for their annual Nighttime Zoo event over the last 25 years, then you might be a little sad to hear that 2026 will be the final year of the beloved family-favorite experience.

But don't be concerned! 2027 will welcome in a brand-new summer seasonal celebration. Details are yet to be released but rest assured, we'll share the full details of that event right here on Go Visit San Diego once they come available!

Fun for All Ages

The Nighttime Zoo event is one of San Diego's most family-friendly events of the year and totally suitable for kids of all ages! It offers a different experience to be at the zoo at night and is 100% worth the trip.

Lights and music will ignite a new energy for this unique blend of wildlife and entertainment under the stars. Whether you're a San Diego local or are visiting on summer vacation, I think this event, along with the SeaWorld San Diego Summer Spectacular 2026 are the special summer ones you should consider!

Seeing the zoo at night gives it a playful energy - colorful lights, lively shows, and a whole new vibe that's completely different from a daytime visit. So with that local insight in mind, we always recommend Nighttime Zoo to anyone who wants a fresh take on one of San Diego's classic attractions.

Local Tips
Skip Front Street at 7:45pm
Locals know the Jambo Dunia parade at 7:45pm draws huge crowds on Front Street. Head to the Boardwalk Beer Garden or Africa Rocks Stage during this time for shorter lines and a more relaxed vibe, then catch the performers as they finish their route near the exit.

Tickets & Hotel Information

Now that we've introduced some of the basics about this year's annual Nighttime Zoo event, let's have a look at how to get discounted admission and at some of our team at Go Visit San Diego's favorite nearby hotels.

Live Music & Dance at Nighttime Zoo

When you think about visiting the San Diego Zoo, the diverse range of animals obviously come to mind. But at Nighttime Zoo, there's so much more to experience.

The entertainment will impress with a list of must-see performers and live music located in the five areas of the park listed below.

  • Front Street
  • Wildlife Explorers Basecamp
  • Outback
  • Urban Jungle
  • Africa Rocks

Much of the entertainment will greet you upon arrival on Front Street! From lively music to dance and character meet-and-greets, that's where it all begins.

Let's explore the entertainment that will be waiting for you at the Nighttime Zoo event.

Enjoy Live Music & Dance

A lot of the energy will begin with the variety of live music you can enjoy throughout the park. If you're kids like to move, the 2026 event will feature multiple interactive dance opportunities as well.

Rock & Roar

'Rock & Roar' is the zoo's in-house rock and pop band. You can expect them to play top hits from today and year's past. They just might have your entire family dancing and singing along.

With shows at 4:00pm, 5:00pm, 6:00pm, and 7:00pm on the Front Street Stage, grooving to one of their 30-minute shows is a great place to start!

Zoolamoves

The Front Street Stage will also be the Nighttime Zoo home of the Zoolamoves crew, a fantastic group of high-energy hosts that will lead guests through some really awesome interactive dances.

These 30-minute performances will be at 4:30pm, 5:30pm, and 6:30pm.

The Chameleons

You won't want to miss 'The Chameleons'. This brass ensemble will perform an array of tunes from the Beatles to Broadway outside Front Plaza near the Sweet Shack. The group will play 30-minute sets at 4:30pm, 5:30pm, and 6:30pm.

The Explorers

I love talented musicians and there aren't many more gifted than The Explorers!

The Wildlife Explorers Basecamp Stage will feature the four-part harmony a cappella group singing wildlife themed tunes for four performances daily at 4:00pm, 5:00pm, 6:00pm, and 7:00pm for 30 minutes each.

Summer Songs

For me, this may be my personal favorite spot. The Boardwalk Beer Garden will feature three daily 45-minute sets of acoustic guitar and vocals at 3:45pm, 5:00pm, and 6:15pm.

If you need a break from a long day exploring, you can grab a beer and relax to the soothing tunes from across decades.

Take Part in a Cultural Celebration

Visitors won't be surprised to hear that many of the animals they'll get to see at the zoo aren't from San Diego. They come from all corners of the world from Africa to Australia, Asia and South America.

As part of the 2026 Nighttime Zoo event, visitors will have a special opportunity to celebrate the incredible culture of East Africa!

Vibrant Rhythms

East Africa is the focus of this 45-minute performance. Kids will have the chance to dance along to the drumbeats as the musicians and dancers showcase their skills for the crowd.

You'll be able to catch this show three times a day at the Africa Rocks Stage, on the hour from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.

Acrobatic Performances

The acrobats at the trampoline performances are incredibly talented and something you won't want to miss!

Amazing Acrobats of Tanzania

Cultural celebrations like the 'Amazing Acrobats of Tanzania' are a breathtaking display of acrobatic skills.

The high-energy, 15-minute performances always entertain my kids as the talented troupe jumps and flips in an incredible mix of acrobatics and fun for all ages. Showtimes are set for 3:45pm, 4:45pm, and 5:45pm at the Africa Rocks Stage.

Bounce-a-Roo Bonanza

If your kids need a bit more high-energy entertainment, the 15-minute Bounce-a-Roo Bonanza performed every hour starting at 3:30pm until 6:30pm will be the perfect choice for your family.

The trampoline show behind Sydney's Grill will feature an acrobatic group of performers dressed up like wildlife jumping, bouncing, and entertaining!

Jambo Dunia!

'Jambo Dunia!' will be a very special once-nightly experience during the 2026 event.

The 15-minute event at 7:45pm along Front Street will feature African music, puppets, dancers, and acrobats. I can tell you from past years that the costumes will be colorful, the performers will be interactive, and the experience will be memorable.

One more experience worth considering will take place at Wildlife Explorers Basecamp Stage.

Dr. Zoolittle's Exploration Station 25-minute show will explore nature, highlighting conservation efforts around the globe.

What Animals Can I See During Nighttime Zoo?

While there will be animals to see such as coconut crabs, ocelots, and fennec foxes, some of the exhibits will not be open for the duration of Nighttime Zoo.

For example, the panda exhibit, which is a favorite of our team at Go Visit San Diego, will close at 5:30pm. So, if that's on your list of must-sees, you'll want to make sure you're in line early.

Some of the animal exhibits change their schedule daily. You can always check with the zoo staff when you arrive or call for the latest information on the day you plan to attend.

Even though not every animal habitat will stay open after dark, there will still be plenty to explore and the atmosphere will have a festive energy you won't find during the day. Honestly, even without all the animals, there's something quietly exciting about wandering the paths after sunset - the familiar trails feel totally transformed during the Nighttime Zoo event with colorful lights, music, and some really awesome pop-up entertainment!

Getting to the Zoo

Getting to the San Diego Zoo is easy! But, if you haven't visited recently, there have been some parking changes I want you to know about before you go.

What's the Best Way to Get to the Zoo?

Not to be confused with the sister park, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park located in Escondido, the San Diego Zoo is located in the Downtown San Diego area in Balboa Park.

You can easily drive to the zoo or take a San Diego rideshare like Uber or Lyft.

Public Transportation Options

Public transportation is another option. You can take the MTS Rapid 215 or Route 7 bus from Downtown San Diego and other areas around the city.

While the San Diego Trolley doesn't drop off directly at the San Diego Zoo, you can easily take the blue or orange lines to the City College Station and grab the MTS Bus for a 10-to-15-minute ride to the gate from there.

Parking Lot at the San Diego Zoo

New Parking Rules

Until early 2026, parking was free at the San Diego Zoo and in Balboa Park. After that time, unless you are a member of the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (members receive one complimentary parking pass), you will most likely have to pay to park.

Currently, registered locals can park for a discount or for free in some lots. With the parking details in Balboa Park frequently changing, we wrote a full article with the most up-to-date details about parking in Balboa Park, so be sure to check that out.

If nothing changes during the summertime Nighttime Zoo event, and you're not a San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance member, parking prices will be:

  • $16 - General admission daily parking
  • $44 - Oversized vehicles daily parking
  • $8 - City of San Diego residents daily parking
  • $22 - City of San Diego oversized daily parking (advanced registration)

You'll find kiosks located around the parking lot to pay, or you can pay on your phone by scanning the QR code on signs throughout the lot.

Know Before You Go

Now that you know all about the final year of Nighttime Zoo at the San Diego Zoo, let me share just a few more tips that I think you should know before you attend.

Best Arrival Times

Be an early bird! We suggest that you arrive early so you and your family can enjoy all of the daytime attractions and animals as well as the Nighttime Zoo a little later in the afternoon.

With this approach, you'll not only get more for your money, but you also have time to check out exhibits that close early.

Is the Zoo Handicapped Accessible?

The zoo has many services, such as special access to experiences and wheelchair rentals to name a few.

If you or someone in your party will need special assistance, be sure to read the details about handicapped accessibility at the San Diego Zoo.

What Should I Wear to the Event?

While the San Diego days are sure to be sunny and warm, I'd suggest that you bring a jacket or light sweater for the evening as temperatures can dip a bit after the sun goes down.

Say Cheese!

The San Diego Zoo does a really good job of offering photo opportunities throughout the park. There will be characters like Dr. Harry & Friends as well as scenic backdrops that just beg for a family photo.
