Navigating San Diego’s Seasonal Events

With its reputation for year-round warm weather, many vacationers anticipate every single day in San Diego to be sunny and cloud-free. While it’s true that air temperatures are relatively stable throughout the year with minor variations based on location, it’s also important to note that the county isn’t immune from weather events.

The last thing anyone wants to do is plan their vacation during poor weather. While there’s always plenty to do in San Diego, rain or shine, knowing what to expect can go a long way toward having an exciting and memorable trip.

Don’t ignore these seasonal events, especially since they’re often predictable, making them easy to take into account!

May Gray and June Gloom are weather patterns much resented by Southern Californians, who expect clear skies throughout the year. They're created by high air pressure, which causes clouds to get trapped right above the city.

Even if you’re visiting during May or June, there’s no need to worry about occasional clouds. They won’t put a damper on your trip.

The climate is still warm and pleasant; it just tends to become a little more overcast, especially in the mornings, when the clouds are lower. It doesn't stop people heading to the beaches in their droves, or still enjoying the relaxed outdoor lifestyle, though.

If you’d prefer to add some indoor activities to your itinerary, there are plenty to choose from. Start with a trip to an aquarium like Birch Aquarium at Scripps, then follow it up with a tour of Balboa Park’s museums.

Dense Fog

Typically in the months from October through December is when it can get dense fog. It is not very common but it does happen from time to time.

The dense fog can happen from a period of offshore flow. Which is where the wind blows from the land to the ocean, which is what we call Santa Ana Conditions. The dense fog can form when the surface pressures are higher over land than over the ocean.

El Niño & La Niña Events

El Niño and La Niña are two climate forces that occasionally occur in the Pacific Ocean due to trade winds. Since San Diego lies right along the coast, its weather and overall climate are often impacted by these two events.

These intricate weather patterns, which impact ocean temperatures and every aspect of the global climate, were first noted by South American fishermen in the 1600s. They recur, on average, every 2 to 7 years.

El Niño typically affects North America during the winter, bringing higher than average temperatures and greater than average rainfall over the western USA, including San Diego. Water temperatures tend to rise with the advent of an El Nino event.

La Nina events produce opposite effects, so they typically bring with them cooler temperatures and less precipitation. The temperature of the ocean waters will also be lower than average during La Nina years.

Santa Ana Conditions

The Santa Anas are strong winds that blow down from the mountains, across the great basin and the Mojave Desert, towards the Pacific Ocean.

They most often occur in the Fall but have been known to appear at other times of the year. With wind speeds that can exceed 64 km/h, these hot, dry air currents can have a catastrophic effect on wildfires, especially after the summer droughts and at times when rainfall is still scarce. This has only gotten worse with climate change, as California experiences more frequent wildfires that spread further and faster than before.

It’s not all bad though; the Santa Anas are known to contribute to larger and more consistent waves which are beloved by thrill-seeking surfers. When weather conditions allow, it’s fun to take these challenging waves on, or to simply sit back on the shore and watch local pros surf.
