Lights, Camera, Action: Summer Movies in the Park!

While some of our team members at Go Visit San Diego prefer the fall, for me, summertime is my favorite time to be in San Diego! My kids are out of school and it seems like San Diego County has some sort of event going on almost every day.

From taking advantage of the summer concerts and outdoor music festivals to visiting the best tourist attractions, I never hear "I'm bored" from my kids!

One of my personal favorite annual activities is the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation's 'Summer Movies in the Park' series. Not only do I get to enjoy a list of incredible movies with my family for FREE, but I also get to visit several neighborhood parks and recreation centers at the same time!

What Months Can My Family Catch a Summer Movie in the Park?

Movies are scheduled starting at the end of May, running through the summer, and well into the fall, with the last movies of the season set to play around Halloween.

In terms of exact dates, the first movie will be on May 23rd, with the final major movie taking place on October 31st, 2026 (NOTE: GOAT will play in Mira Mesa on December 11th, 2026).

What Time Do the Movies Begin?

Movies start at 'dusk'. Dusk is approximately 15 minutes after sunset which will change with the seasons. As a local tip, your best bet will be to check the sunset time on the day of the event you want to attend, and then plan to arrive about an hour early.

Many of the parks and recreation centers will have games, food trucks, and more. Even for those locations that don't offer pre-movie activities, it's safe to say that all movie locations will have other locals and kids excited to meet you and your family.

How Much is Admission?

At Go Visit San Diego we're always looking for free or budget-friendly things to do with our families. And when we find free things to do that are fun for all age groups, that's when we really get excited to share!

That's exactly what's so awesome about the summer movies in the park! You and your family can see all the movies in the entire series for FREE! With everything so expensive these days, this is a real treat.

Do note though that some locations may charge a small parking fee.

Quick History of San Diego's Summer Movies in the Park

The Summer Movies in the Park series is the largest family-friendly, free outdoor movie series in San Diego County.

It started in 2007 as a "take back our parks" initiative to run together with the county's Live Well vision. Nearly 20 years later, it's thriving and continues to attract hundreds of families each year!

Why I Personally Love Summer Movies in the Park

I love spending time with my family, and catching a movie for free is a homerun for me!

One of the best things about this event too is that there are so many different venues showing movies throughout the season. From visiting Waterfront Park in Downtown San Diego to the Morley Field Sports Complex in North Park, taking advantage of the Summer Movies in the Park can really help you see much of the San Diego area you might not visit otherwise.

More Than Just a Movie!

While we all go to see the movies, there's much more to enjoy!

I've found that pre-movie activities, like bounce houses, family-friendly games, dancing, arts and crafts, and snacks kick off before dark with the movies all starting about 15 minutes after sunset.

Some parks and venues will also have concessions and food trucks. Be sure to check the movie you want to see directly ahead so you know what to expect! Do note though that offerings really vary park to park as some won't have any pre-show activities or food available.

Local Tips
Pack Your Own Movie Snacks & Blankets
Since food availability varies by park, bring your own picnic, popcorn, and movie candy to enjoy under the stars. Don't forget folding chairs or blankets, seating isn't provided. Also pack a light jacket, as San Diego evenings can get chilly.

Where to Catch a Summer Movie in the Park

The 2026 Summer Movies in the Park series will once again feature well over 100 family-friendly movies in more than 90parks and venues spread all over San Diego. Things to Know Before You Head to a Movie

Before you head out to a Summer Movie in the Park with your family, let me answer a few more FAQs about the events.

Is There Parking Available?

Many of the venues have large parking areas and are also close to public transportation. Some of the parks are small and therefore will have limited parking or street parking.

Your best bet is to check ahead of your visit directly with the park or venue to see if parking is available.

Is There Food for Purchase?

Some venues will have popcorn, concessions, and food trucks, while others will not. The official Summer Movies in the Park site lists out the movies in their 'Upcoming Events' section where they provide details about each park's food and concessions.

You can also always pack a picnic or some popcorn and movie candy, and eat under the stars!

What Should I Bring?

There are no chairs provided at any of the events, so I suggest that you bring your own folding chairs or blankets.

It may also be a good idea to bring a light jacket or sweater as the San Diego nights, especially in parks closer to the mountains, can get a touch chilly for my liking!

Can I Bring My Dog?

If you love to bring your entire family, including your dog, to family events, you just might be in luck!

Some, but not all, parks allow dogs. I would say that many have a pet policy that allows for dogs on a leash which makes sense as most of the parks have outdoor screens.

Your best bet is to check with your park of choice in advance or the 'Upcoming Events' section of the official site which will include the park's pet policy for the movie.

Can I Smoke or Vape at the Movie?

No, all movies are smoke-free which includes smoking, vaping, e-cigarettes, and tobacco of any kind.
