The San Diego Zoo's Food, Wine & Brew 2026: Culinary Experiences Go Wild!

Walking Around at the Food, Wine and Brew at the San Diego ZooDesert Vendor at the Food, Wine and Brew at the San Diego Zoo

Just when I thought the already incredible world-famous San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park couldn't get any better, I found out about what has become one of my personal favorite special events of the year!

What began as a small charity event known as 'Kicks for Critters' in 1980 and was once known as 'Celebration for the Critters' and 'San Diego Food & Wine Celebration', the event has grown into something truly special. Welcoming more than 3000 guests in 2025, this incredible celebration today is known as Food, Wine & Brew at the San Diego Zoo!

What is Food, Wine & Brew at the San Diego Zoo?

The San Diego Zoo's Food, Wine & Brew celebration is an annual after hours soiree with proceeds benefitting the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. Guests are invited one night a year, for a truly unique experience.

Alongside the wildlife residents and live music, the zoo partners with an incredible selection of food and beverage vendors that highlight some of the best restaurants, wineries, and breweries across Southern California to offer you and your family a night to remember!

When is the San Diego Zoo's Food, Wine & Brew Event in 2026?

The one-night event is scheduled for Saturday, May 2nd, 2026, starting at 6:30pm for VIP ticket holders and 7:30pm for general admission access.

While food and drinks are the highlight of the event, they're not the only reason to come out and support the zoo!

You can also feel good about your purchase, as ticket sales benefit the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, the conservation organization behind both the San Diego Zoo and its sister park, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido.

How Does the Event Create a Unique After-Hours Experience at the Zoo?

Food, Wine & Brew at the San Diego Zoo instantly became one of my favorite annual events, and I'll tell you why! There's just something magical about being at the Zoo after hours, wandering the grounds at night with the animals as a backdrop and a tasting glass in hand. It's the kind of local event that feels both special and accessible.

When I went in previous years, our group spanned three generations - from my mom in her 80s to my niece and her husband in their 20s - and everyone had a genuinely great time. The atmosphere is lively but laid-back, with fantastic bites and drinks throughout the park.

Ticket Information

VIP and General Admission tickets for the 2026 event are still available, but going fast. It is possible that the event sells out so if you're considering attending, I'd recommend you get your tickets soon.

Ticket Types with 2026 Prices

Food, Wine & Brew at the San Diego Zoo is offering two ticket options for the 2026 event – a General Admission option and a VIP Experience.

The ticket prices per person are exactly the same as they were for the 2025 event. In a world where everything seems to be getting more expensive, this is really exciting news!

  • General Admission: $179
  • VIP Experience: $299

Remember that this is a charity event and huge fundraiser for the zoo going to the conservation and preservation of the animals. So with your admission you'll be supporting a very good cause!

It is worth noting that the ticket prices are ultimately considered a donation, so on the slight chance that the event is rained out, the prices paid are non-refundable and will go to support the zoo. Just know that San Diego weather in May is usually mild and beautiful so a rainout is very unlikely.

What Does the VIP Experience Include?

I'm looking forward to purchasing the VIP Experience tickets for my family this year because when we last attended, we felt like a little more time would have been really nice. With the VIP experience, we think we'll be able to really settle in without rushing.

The VIP Experience includes all food, wine, beer tastings, live music, dancing, and entertainment that comes with general admission as well as:

  • Early access to the festivities (1 additional hour)
  • Private food & beverage vendors
  • VIP-only restrooms
  • VIP exclusive lounges

VIP guests will also have exclusive access to a special wildlife encounter in the VIP lounge located in Wildlife Explorer's Basecamp.

The VIP Experience is open from 6:30pm until 10:00pm.

Having a dedicated space to hang out and enjoy the evening sounds perfect, especially since this event is as much about the company as it is the setting. If you're looking for somewhere to bring together family or friends of all ages, this is it!

Are There Discount Tickets Available?

While there are no discount tickets for the Food, Wine & Brew event, there are discount tickets to the San Diego Zoo with the Go City San Diego pass, which can get you daytime access to the zoo.

The pass can also be used for attractions like SeaWorld San Diego and the Birch Aquarium at Scripps. Use discount code GVSD5OFF for a bonus savings at checkout.

What You Can Expect

A day at the San Diego Zoo always promises to be memorable and fun - so much so that it's my personal favorite San Diego attraction!

Of course, there's even more to experience after dark at this year's Food, Wine & Brew celebration!

A Tasting Adventure

The diverse selection of vendors at the event will include locally-made beers, wines, and non-alcoholic beverages. You'll get to sample drinks from an array of beverage companies, many of which are locally-based like Bivouac Ciderworks from North Park and Bernardo Winery from Rancho Bernardo.

There will also be food vendors with an even more varied range of cuisines, with everything from appetizers and small bites to desserts sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. One thing's for sure: you won't go home hungry!

2026 Drink Vendors

The lineup of drink vendors was quite impressive in 2025 and it looks just as incredible for the 2026 event. With more than 90 vendors set to attend this year, you won't be thirsty with wines, beers, and non-alcoholic options like soft drinks, bottled water, and even kombucha on offer.

With choices from near and far, I especially love that so many are from the San Diego area. A few of our team at Go Visit San Diego's 2026, locally-based standouts we think you should try are listed below.

  • AleSmith Brewing Company
  • Cutwater
  • Foot Path Winery
  • Helix Brewing Co
  • Julian Hard Cider
  • Modern Times Beer
  • Pizza Port Brewing Co
  • San Diego Brewing Company
  • San Diego Distillery
  • San Diego Sake Club

2026 Food Vendors

The list of food vendors is strong and could still grow before May 2nd! As a foodie myself, I'll be keeping an eye out and I'll be sure to update you here.

The zoo advertises the event as featuring some of 'Southern California's best food', and I can say from personal experience that they are telling the truth! There are so many tasty options that it becomes more about where to start and what to eat than finding something you like.

With so many companies joining the cause, a few of my personal favorites are listed below.

  • Blue Poke
  • Garibaldi
  • Bluewater Boathouse
  • Lia's Lumpia
  • Mangia e Bevi
  • Luna Grill
  • S'Möregåsbord

And for dessert, I'd suggest you go with 'Homemade Cali Cream Ice Cream' or 'Handel's Homemade Ice Cream & Yogurt'. And if you like donuts like me, don't miss 'Donut, Hello', a San Diego favorite. All of these are delicious and will surely offer the perfect sweet treat to finish off the evening.

Wildlife Experiences During the Event

It's safe to say that no visit to the zoo would be complete without seeing the animals!

While all attractions and exhibits won't be open during the event, many animal areas will be open.

Wildlife Encounters

Guests will have access to areas like the Urban Jungle and Reptile Plaza. Guests will also have access to Wildlife Explorers Basecamp, Bieler Plaza, and Front Street, all locations for animal viewing.

Look for the areas with the party footprint. Those are the ones that will be open during the event.

There will also be shows and up-close animal experiences on the Conservation Stage, a Zoofari Party area, plus musical acts and other performing artists providing the night's soundtrack.

Will VIP Guests Get any Special Animal Encounters?

Yes! VIP Guests will receive special access to a wildlife encounter in the VIP lounge located in the Wildlife Explore's Basecamp.

Getting to the Zoo & Parking

To get to the event, your options will be to drive yourself or take public transportation.

Check out our getting there and parking tips before you go so you can decide which option is best for you.

Getting Ready to Go into the Food, Wine and Brew at the San Diego Zoo
Getting Ready to Go into the Food, Wine and Brew at the San Diego Zoo

Getting to the Zoo

Driving to Balboa Park is your first option. No matter the direction you're coming from, once you're on Park Blvd, you will see signs for the zoo.

As a local tip, if you decide to drive, don't forget to bring a designated driver so you can enjoy all the wine and beer the event has on offer.

Parking Info

Good news! While Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo started charging for parking in early 2026, parking for the Food, Wine & Brew event is complimentary after 5:00pm. Be careful though as this only applies to vehicles parked in the lot in front of the Zoo.

If you park in any of the following areas, you are not eligible for complimentary parking:

  • Zoo Drive
  • Park Boulevard
  • Inspiration Point parking lot at the corner of Park Boulevard and President's Way
  • Neighboring parking lots throughout Balboa Park

Another thing that I need to mention is that parking is no longer free during regular hours at the Zoo or in Balboa Park, so I want to emphasize that the free parking is only available after 5:00pm on the day of the event. You now have to pay to park, unless you are a member of the San Diego Wildlife Alliance. Prices are:

  • $16 general admission daily parking
  • $44 oversized vehicles daily parking
  • $8 City of San Diego residents daily parking
  • $22 City of San Diego oversized daily parking (advanced registration)

Since free parking is limited, I would highly recommend public transportation or taking a San Diego rideshare such as Uber and Lyft.

Public Transportation

It's easy and usually cost effective to get to the zoo using one of the city's public transportation options.

There are MTS bus stops at the zoo on the Rapid 215 and on Route 7, with easy connections from the COASTER at the Santa Fe Depot.

Is the Event Handicapped Accessible?

The event is wheelchair accessible with only a few minor inclines within the party area. Non-electric wheelchair rentals will be available at the Rental Shop inside the Zoo until 8:00pm.

Tips, FAQs & More!

Now that you know the basics, here's a few more things our team at Go Visit San Diego thinks are good to know before attending!

Beautiful Couples First Time at the Food, Wine and Brew at the San Diego Zoo

Dress Code and Comfort

The event page recommends 'cocktail casual' attire for the evening, so I'd personally recommend you wear something nice like a sundress or skirt and blouse for the ladies or a dress shirt and light coat for the men.

Also, since you'll be walking a portion of the zoo grounds, comfortable shoes are a must! But if your feet get tired, there will be tables and chairs available, plus remember, lounge accessible for VIP guests.

Can I Bring My Kids?

Unfortunately, the answer to this is 'no'. All attendees must be 21 or older.

This means that even infants or young children will not be permitted and strollers are also not allowed during the event.

Are cameras allowed?

Yes! If you do take some pictures and post them on social media, be sure to use the hashtag #sdzoofoodwineandbrew.

Book a Hotel Nearby

Since the event ends late, attendees who don't live nearby may be looking for a hotel. One of our favorites that isn't far from Balboa Park is The Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club & Bungalows, which is the perfect place to relax after the party.

The property recently went through a huge renovation so everything feels new and fresh. Plus, the rooms and suites offer a retro vibe with reclaimed wood floors that I think you'll really like.

One More Local Tip

My final insider tip for you is to just have fun and take in all that this event has to offer!

There's just nothing like enjoying great food and drinks at the San Diego Zoo after dark. To me, the event feels a little magical. It's a rare special occasion that truly brings together everyone from their twenties to their eighties!
