As Memorial Day approaches, what my family recognizes as the 'unofficial start of summer', it's also an opportunity to pause and consider the sacrifices our brave military men and women have made. I personally appreciate the chance to reflect on the gravity of what others have given while celebrating and appreciating our great country.
Whether you're looking to honor Memorial Day traditions or take your family to celebrate the day with a fun 5K race, a day at a theme park, or maybe a sunny afternoon at the beach like my family, San Diego will once again offer a wide range of ways to celebrate Memorial Day in 2026!

What is the History of Memorial Day Ceremonies?
So we're honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, but the question is when did we start celebrating Memorial Day ceremonies each year in late May. You might be wondering what the history is that's led us to where we are today.
As someone with military members in my family that have served our country proudly, and with the strong military, especially naval history in San Diego, these are great questions!
Originally called Decoration Day in 1868, Memorial Day roots can be traced back to just after the Civil War when communities would come together to decorate the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags. Grand Army of the Republic Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan proclaimed that this special day should be celebrated on May 30th, moved by Congress in 1968 to the last Monday of May so families could have a three-day weekend.

What Family-friendly Events are Happening in San Diego for Memorial Day?
I'm personally focusing on the family-friendly things to do this Memorial Day. I want to teach my kids what the holiday is all about. I also want to make some family memories as we kick off the summer season.
For us, the top family-friendly events we're looking forward to for the Memorial Day weekend this year are the USS Midway Legacy Week 2026 events, Kensington "Holiday at Home" parade & festivities, and the Free Summer Movies in the Park viewing of a Minecraft Movie in Waterfront Park that showing on Saturday night.
Those are my family's top picks but there's good news, there are even more family-friendly events taking place over the Memorial Day weekend! Also consider that since you can't possibly do everything on the list in just two or three days, many of these events start over Memorial Day weekend but last through the summer which could make them incredible things to do for Father's Day as well.
We'll look at them all in detail on our list below!

Weekend Dates & Discount Tickets
Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 25th in 2026, but the weekend events start as early as Friday, May 22nd.
Some of the most popular events are set to take place in theme parks and at San Diego's top attractions, with the cost to attend included with admission. The best way to get the cheapest ticket to these attractions with Memorial Day events like SeaWorld San Diego, the San Diego Zoo, and Belmont Park is with a Go City San Diego pass using discount code GVSD5OFF at checkout.
The pass bundles together admission to these parks and about 40 other attractions and museums to save you real money!
More Budget-friendly & FREE Things to Do for Memorial Day Weekend
If you're working with a tighter budget, there are also plenty of free and budget-friendly Memorial Day celebrations that my family loves! You can have a great time watching a parade, going to one of the local beaches, visiting the Vista Strawberry Festival or visiting the historic USS Midway, also part of the Go City San Diego pass, which is holding a very special Memorial Day event this year.
So there are a few great options for affordably celebrating Memorial Day, but no matter which you choose, you're sure to have a lot of fun welcoming in the summer and recognizing our military heroes.
