Fall has arrived in San Diego which means cooler temperatures, fall festivals, pumpkin patches, and Oktoberfest celebrations set to kick off all over San Diego!
While beer, and a lot of it, is usually the main event, San Diego's Oktoberfest celebrations often offer a lot more, including traditional food like pretzels, roasted chickens and pork knuckles.
You can also expect traditional polka and oompah music, interactive games, and many attendees adorned in old-fashioned Bavarian outfits like lederhosen for the men and dirndl dresses for the women.
A Brief History of Oktoberfest
The first 'Oktoberfest' took place on October 12th, 1810, to celebrate the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese. The event was such a hit that they kept the annual tradition going now for more than 200 years!
Today these German folk and beer festivals occur all over the world, with the main event taking place each year at the Theresienwiese grounds in Munich, Germany.
Although named 'Oktoberfest', festivals in San Diego usually kick off at the end of September and last into the early part of October.
Where is San Diego's Best Oktoberfest Celebration in 2026?
If you're short on time and just looking for the 'best' Oktoberfest celebration in San Diego in 2026, I think it really comes down to when you want to attend and what you hope to get out of the event.
For me, I'm looking for a family-friendly event with a community vibe this year so the Encinitas Oktoberfest & Artisan Market is my choice. Set for Sunday, September 27th, the event will include oompah music, craft beer, and 130+ artisan vendor booths.

If you're looking for the biggest and most popular traditional-style Oktoberfest celebration this year, you can't go wrong with the La Mesa Oktoberfest set for October 2nd through October 4th at the Historic La Mesa Village.
Featuring multiple biergartens, traditional bands and fun contests, the 2026 event should be a ton of fun.
San Diego's Most Authentic German Oktoberfest Celebration in 2026
If you're looking for the most authentic Oktoberfest celebration in San Diego in 2026, I'd suggest the Oktoberfest in El Cajon.
This one is put on by the German American Societies of San Diego and will feature real German polka bands and authentic imported German brews.
