Step Back to the Past at the Glorietta Bay Inn

Grab An Afternoon Drink in the Lobby Bar at the Glorietta Bay InnBreakfast Room at the Glorietta Bay Inn

Just across the picturesque San Diego Bay bay from the Downtown San Diego area is Coronado Island, a beloved destination with sparkling, sandy beaches, historic mansions, quaint shops, and fabulous restaurants. It’s also where you’ll find the Glorietta Bay Inn, the former home of sugar baron John D. Spreckels.

What was once a sprawling estate, situated right across the street from the iconic Hotel Del Coronado, is now a boutique hotel featuring eleven rooms and suites in the original mansion and 89 modern rooms and suites in the newer wings.

A Historic Retreat in Coronado

San Diego has plenty of historic and old-fashioned hotels, from The Guild Hotel to The Horton Grand Hotel. There’s even some competition right in Coronado with The Del. Despite this, our team thinks that Glorietta Bay Inn stands out with its own charm.

Not only has the inn been meticulously remodeled to retain its original grandeur, but it also has your every comfort in mind. The main house has been updated with elegant furnishings and private baths in each room, and even the outdoor verandah, grand staircase, brass cage elevator, and music room complete with baby grand piano retain their opulent charm.

What to Expect

When you enter your room, you may be surprised by the tasteful coastal chic design with rich textures and soothing neutral colors. Some of the contemporary rooms have a private patio or balcony and a bay view which is also shared by several rooms in the mansion.

You can relax in a plush bathrobe, schedule an in-room massage, or just take a quick nap between activities. It’s the perfect spot for you to unwind after a business meeting or day on one of Coronado Island’s beaches.

Though the hotel does charge a resort fee as of a few years ago, I think you get more than enough to justify the price, offering more amenities than you may expect. Continental breakfast is provided daily during your stay as are delightful afternoon refreshments. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, and you can even make use of the chairs, umbrellas, towels, and sand toys when you visit the beach.

Speaking of the beach, the hotel has direct access, just a short walk away. Or you can choose to lounge at the outdoor pool, take a soak in the hot tub, or test your skills at the mini-golf course instead.

A Personalized Stay

The Glorietta Bay Inn is always happy to assist you with your business needs or special occasions during your stay. The staff can help you plan small gatherings and corporate retreats in its meeting facilities, as well as arrange family gatherings, plus handle any special requests.

The hotel is conveniently located near the main shopping and dining district on Coronado Island, and of course, you have all of San Diego at your feet when you want to experience more of what this area of Southern California has to offer.

Our team loves the historic boutique experience so much that we included the Glorietta Bay Inn as one of our top picks for the Best Boutique Hotels in San Diego!

But why exactly did we give the hotel such an honor? Let’s get a bit more specific!

What I Love About the Inn

Experience History

I mentioned earlier that the Glorietta Bay Inn began as the home of John D. Spreckels, an important figure in San Diego’s story, but I also want to note just how cool it is to stay somewhere with so much history!

The property dates back to 1908 and was originally the Spreckels mansion home. Even today, staying here feels like being transported back to when San Diego was still a developing city on California’s coast, especially if you stay in the older mansion rooms.

After Spreckels passed away, the mansion changed hands a few times, with each new owner expanding the property and making additions. It became a bed and breakfast in 1949, but didn’t develop into a full-fledged hotel until the renovations in 1975. The comforts of the new additions round out the experience without drowning out the original design.

A Desirable Location

Coronado has some of my favorite hotels, and the Glorietta Bay Inn is no exception when it comes to having a great location. You won’t be hurting for activities when you stay here, though if you’d prefer to relax at the resort, I wouldn’t blame you!

Just a short walk from your hotel, you’ll find plenty of San Diego’s most interesting things to do. These include nearby attractions, from the beaches to Coronado Harbor, and even some other nearby hotels worth checking out.

If you’re interested in checking out the Hotel del Coronado but you’d prefer to stay somewhere a little more budget-friendly, Glorietta Bay Inn is an excellent choice. The average room rates are a bit cheaper than what you’ll find at The Del, but you won’t be sacrificing any quality.

Plus, you’ll still be right across the street from the historic hotel, so you can explore its property and attached beachfront when you swing by Sundaes Ice Cream & Gelateria for a sweet treat.

A Charming Boutique Hotel

Don’t expect to get the same impersonal experience that sometimes comes along with a stay at a larger chain hotel! The Glorietta Bay Inn has under 100 rooms on the property, which allows the staff to cater to guest needs while also providing an unforgettably unique stay.

Alongside the bayside views and laid-back feel of being on Coronado Island, the experience of staying at the resort is a truly boutique one. When I think about what I look for in a hotel, it doesn’t get better than this!

Rooms & Rates

Coronado room at Glorietta Bay Inn

As a guest, you have the choice of staying in a comfortable contemporary room in the newer wings or a lavish historic one in the main mansion. Each hotel room has air conditioning, private bathroom, flat-screen television, refrigerator, in-room safe, coffee maker, and daily housekeeping.

The mansion rooms offer a quiet, peaceful setting with custom furnishings, continental breakfast delivered bedside, nightly turndown service with freshly baked cookies and milk, daily newspaper, and fresh flowers. ADA-accessible rooms are on property as well.

The named mansion rooms are each unique in their furnishings and room amenities. When you book one of these spectacular rooms and suites, you can learn more about what makes each one special.

Each mansion room is designed for double occupancy, and most have one king bed. Room names are incredibly memorable and I personally love small touches and creativity like this, again the little things usually reserved for stays at boutique hotels.

Some of the room’s names include the Library, Lurline, Crown, Sunset, Sugar Baron, Coronado, Albright, the Garden Suite, Lillie’s Room, the Spreckels Suite, and the Penthouse Suite.

Here are your room and suite options in the modern wings.

Popular Amenities at the Resort

While you stay at the hotel, you’ll have a healthy selection of amenities to enjoy!

Glorietta Bay Inn’s offerings include a heated outdoor swimming pool with beach chairs, plus a hot tub. You can also spend some time in the stunning music room or play mini-golf on the putting green.

Go Golfing

There are a few golf courses in Coronado and nearby areas of San Diego, but if you’re looking to kick back without going far, Glorietta Bay Inn has a putting green right on the property. It’s not quite a whole 9-hole or 18-hole golf course, but it’s still fun to work on your putting skills.

Take a Dip in the Pool

Not all historic properties include a heated pool or hot tub. So it’s worth mentioning that a stay at the Glorietta Bay Inn includes both!

I can say from personal experience that they are both perfect for relaxation and just what the doctor ordered for a slow afternoon or quick plunge after a day exploring the area.

Off-Property Excursions

Aside from the amenities offered at Glorietta Bay Inn, Coronado Island itself has plenty for guests to do during their stay.

Spend time on the beach enjoying the beautiful waters and white sands. You can swim, sunbathe, boogie board, or surf while by the Pacific Ocean. Kayaking and paddle boarding are also popular bay activities for guests to try.

City Attractions

If you want to explore San Diego, take the short drive across the Coronado Bridge to the city where you’ll have a full city’s worth of attractions to see!

To name a few of my favorites, you’ve got LEGOLAND California, SeaWorld San Diego and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Balboa Park’s gardens and museums, La Jolla Cove, Seaport Village, Old Town, and the Gaslamp Quarter.

Those attractions are just a few of my personal favorites! We’ve written a full guide on each so feel free to click on the ones that interest you the most to learn a little more!

The top attractions in San Diego are best enjoyed with a Go City San Diego pass, which lets you save on admission costs as well as gear rentals at the beach. Use our discount code GVSD5OFF to save even more when you pre-purchase your All-inclusive pass.

Explore Coronado Island

Take a tour by foot or on bike, stopping at shops or taking in architecture along the way, including a tour of Hotel Del Coronado to learn more about its history.

Indulge in the delicacies to be found on Coronado by taking a foodie tour with stops at local restaurants. Or take a gondola tour of the island or charter a boat and take it out on open waters.

Before you set out, take advantage of great deals like the Coronado full-day bike rental. In my opinion, this is the ideal way to take a self-guided tour of Coronado’s best sights, from the historic Coronado Bridge to its beaches and boardwalk.

Right across the bridge is easy access to the San Diego International Airport (SAN), the San Diego Convention Center, and the rest of the Downtown San Diego area.

More Nearby Locations Worth Visiting

San Diego’s bigger attractions are tons of fun, but you don’t have to go far to find things to do. If you prefer to stay near the hotel, tennis and golf are a stone’s throw away from the inn for a little friendly competition.

You can also snag a ticket to the vintage movie theater or see a live production at the Coronado Playhouse.
