What You Can Expect When You Stay at the 1906 Lodge

Main Lobby Window from the Street at the 1906 LodgeThe Comfortable Lobby at the 1906 Lodge

With its rich history and laid-back California lifestyle, Coronado Island, located between San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean, welcomes visitors with a unique blend of past and present. The same can be said of the 1906 Lodge Coronado.

If you’re searching for an unhurried respite from day-to-day responsibilities, you will find it at this wonderful place to stay. The 1906 Lodge even makes our list as one of our top picks for the Best Boutique Hotels in San Diego.

As the name suggests, the Lodge was built in 1906 and, at various times in its life, the building served as a boarding house as well as a small hotel.

In 2009, recognizing the historical significance of the property, new owners set about major restoring and renovating efforts. I think that the results are captivating.

Out and About

During your stay at the Lodge, you will find that a pleasant 10-minute walk will take you to Coronado Beach.

Historic downtown Coronado is also just a short walk away with its delightful shops and restaurants. Here you can also enjoy browsing through an art gallery or watching live theater.

Boutique Considerations

The hotel provides spa services, free bicycles to borrow, and beach umbrellas. You will find free newspapers in the lobby and a safe-deposit box for your valuables. Front desk personnel are available 24 hours a day.

Other complimentary services included for every guest include breakfast, mimosas, a daily happy hour with snacks and wine, Wi-Fi access, and access to free underground parking. For an additional charming touch, you’ll even find fresh-baked cookies waiting for you in your room.

We love the atmosphere here. If you choose to visit, we encourage you to relax on the hotel’s terrace and enjoy the peace and beauty of the garden.

What We Love Most About the 1906 Lodge

From the overall vibes to the little details, here’s some information on a few of the things I enjoyed most about this hotel during my stay.

A True Boutique Hotel

Some hotels pride themselves on the sheer number of on-site amenities they can offer to guests, while others focus on providing a truly unique experience and top-tier service. Boutique hotels like the 1906 Lodge tend to opt for the latter route, and it’s something I’ve really come to appreciate.

While there are many small-scale hotels that call themselves boutique, few can offer the same level of service you can expect at the 1906 Lodge. The staff were all very attentive during my stay and the service was excellent, which made me feel appreciated as a guest.

Plus, with just 17 rooms on the property, it felt like an exclusive experience.

It’s Close to the Coast

Coronado is a charming neighborhood, and the 1906 Lodge is located in the perfect spot to let you experience its highlights. The hotel is about ¼ mile from the San Diego Bay and just ½ mile from Coronado’s main coastline, Coronado Central Beach.

These shores are within walking distance from the hotel, but there are other options if you want to go a little further.

If you’re flying into the city via the San Diego International Airport (SAN) and won’t have a car, or you’d just prefer to take a break from driving, never fear; public transit options like Coronado’s Island Express Shuttle make it easy to get around.

The Exquisite Hotel Lobby

I’ve already mentioned how much I love the terrace and garden at the 1906 Lodge, but another ideal spot to hang out is the lobby.

It’s a bit on the smaller side compared to some other hotels, but this is one area where quality reigns supreme over quantity. It’s a nice, comfortable lobby where you can sit and plan your trip or just relax after a long day of travel.
