The Inn at Sunset Cliffs restful yet scenic atmosphere will give you a place of solace outside the main bustle of the city. The clean, spacious rooms of the Inn at Sunset Cliffs offer air-conditioned comfort with remarkable views of the beach and Pacific Ocean.

Indoor amenities include 24-hour desk service, free wi-fi, a business center and complimentary coffee and tea. The knowledgeable staff has always been eager to welcome me with a kind greeting, so I’m sure they will treat you the same way!

A True Coastal Inn

You just can’t beat San Diego beach hotels. There’s nothing quite like being mere steps away from the Pacific Ocean.

While there are plenty of amazing beachfront hotels in San Diego, in my opinion, the Inn at Sunset Cliffs won’t disappoint!

The property features a gorgeous courtyard with an outdoor pool. The only thing I enjoyed more than lounging on the oceanfront terrace, equipped with plenty of seating and umbrellas for added shade, was the ease of taking a walk on the beach.

As a guest you can listen to the waves crash or visit any of the ten local beach bars within walking distance. You can also visit nearby Ocean Beach Pier for a closeup view of the Pacific and enjoy people watching along the walkway.

No Shortage of Things to Do

Both Ocean Beach Park and Ocean Beach Athletic Area are within walking distance of the inn, so you don't have to go far to enjoy swimming, surfing and snorkeling. If you are looking for just the right blend of peaceful solitude or engaging social opportunities, this location has it all.

During your visit, you can broaden your experience to include some of the fine attractions San Diego has to offer. Animal lovers may enjoy the world-famous San Diego Zoo or SeaWorld San Diego in Mission Bay.

Save on these and tons of other attractions with a Go City San Diego pass! Use our site discount code GVSD5OFF to save even more when you pre-purchase an All-inclusive or Explorer version of the pass.

I also think the sunset views at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park are breathtaking and well worth taking a hike out to see in the evening.

The location is prime for those that love to shop as well! Shoppers can peruse the shops along Newport Avenue or visit the Ocean Beach Farmers Market for local vendors and live music.

What I Like Best About the Inn at Sunset Cliffs

There’s a lot to love about the Inn at Sunset Cliffs, so I’ve picked a few of my favorite experiences to highlight.

Lots of Ocean View Seats at the Inn at Sunset Cliffs
Lots of Ocean View Seats at the Inn at Sunset Cliffs

Cliffside Views

Looking out at the ocean is one of the best parts of staying at any seaside hotel, not to mention listening to the gentle crashing waves as you fall asleep and wake up. But The Inn takes it a step further with its gorgeous position just off the cliffs.

The property has some benches and tables set up that are nearly on the cliffside. With San Diego’s sunny weather, I found myself out there all the time, and the breeze coming off the ocean was brisk but calm enough to be refreshing.

The view from there was absolutely stunning, and watching the sunset reflect over the ocean waves was a sight I won’t be forgetting anytime soon. Make sure to take plenty of photos while you’re there!

A Local Tip: Look Out for Whales!

As a local tip, scan the ocean views for whales in the distance!

The Point Loma area and Sunset Cliffs specifically is one of our top locations for whale watching! Keep an eye out for Fin Whales in the summer and fall and my favorite, Humpback Whales in the fall and spring.

Your Home Base for Exploring Point Loma

Point Loma is a neighborhood teeming with history and significant landmarks. It might not be as famous as areas like Downtown San Diego or Balboa Park, but for those who want to learn about the city’s Navy roots, go hiking, or even see the landing point of the first European settlers to arrive on the West Coast, it’s a must-see destination.

Luckily, the hotel is perfectly positioned to see the best sights in Point Loma alongside many of San Diego’s other attractions. I just think it’s a great location for a stay!

Plus, since the Inn at Sunset Cliffs is also so close to Ocean Beach, you can easily access a bunch of attractions in that neighborhood too. There are lots of great beaches, and it’s a fantastic bit of coast for water sports like stand-up paddleboarding and even fishing off the scenic Ocean Beach pier.

I’ll mention a few more of my favorite things to do in Point Loma later on, so keep reading if you’re looking for additional fun activities!

How to Plan Your Trip with the Inn as Your Starting Point

We’ve gone over the room amenities and standout aspects of this hotel, but now it’s time to take a look at activities, both at the hotel and nearby in San Diego.

Popular Amenities and Specials at this San Diego Hotel

The Inn at Sunset Cliffs seeks to maintain the unique draw of the area with its property amenities and packages.

The Inn takes a unique approach to what you might like to do on property in a way that other Point Loma hotels such as the nearby beautiful Humphreys Half Moon Inn & Suites or The Pearl Hotel may not offer.

The hotel has several packages and special rates in partnership with other local businesses that set the stage for what you might like to do during your stay!

The Beach Package

If you’re feeling active, try the Beach Package!

You’ll enjoy your choice of a surf or bodyboard, hotel water bottle, beach ball and drawstring backpack as well as unlimited golf cart rides during your stay.

The Celebration Package

The Celebration Package is great for special occasions like anniversaries or birthdays. Or maybe you’re a local to San Diego that just wants to celebrate life during your staycation?

A bouquet of flowers and balloons will greet you upon arrival. This package also includes golf cart rides and a hotel water bottle.

The Romantic Package

Woo your travel companion with a bouquet of flowers, edible arrangement and an array of faux flower petals in a heart shape on the bed.

I can say that this package may set the stage to relax and reconnect.

Go Fishing off the Pier

If you like to fish, there’s no package required! You can fish right off the Inn’s beautiful terrace in no time!

Visit the Therapie Day Spa

If a relaxing vacation sounds good, visit the Therapie Day Spa.

My personal suggestion would be to enhance your relaxation with a 50-minute Swedish massage.

Try Ocean Beach Surfing and Skating

Ocean Beach is a great place to surf and skate. Stay active and get in the water when you try a group or private surf lesson.

Sink in to Oceanfront Yoga

Seasonally, The Inn at Sunset Cliffs offers free yoga class on Sundays. Check with the front desk staff for details!

What Else to Do Around Point Loma & Ocean Beach

Looking for more things to do nearby? Our team has plenty of suggestions!

Point Loma is a diverse area in terms of activities, with everything from beaches to historic sites plus tons more!

Tour the Beaches

San Diego beaches don’t disappoint! In addition to the stretch of coast right in front of the hotel, you’re spoiled for choice.

Start off with one of the closest options, Ocean Beach City Beach, which has its own pier. And Ocean Beach Dog Beach is a favorite among pet owners seeking pet-friendly beaches.

Why stop there? Other beachy neighborhoods worth checking out include Mission Bay Park, Mission Beach, Coronado Island, and Pacific Beach.

Point Loma’s Landmarks

There’s plenty to do without leaving Point Loma!

For example, visit Sunset Cliffs Natural Park via Sunset Cliffs Boulevard to go hiking. Check out the arts scene at NTC Arts District at Liberty Station, then bike the trails branching out toward Shelter Island or the San Diego International Airport (SAN).

If you happen to be visiting with a college hopeful, you might be interested to know that Point Loma Nazarene University is nearby. The college gives tours to prospective students during the fall and spring.

Any San Diego visitor who loves history should head down the peninsula to see Cabrillo National Monument and the Point Loma Lighthouse, featured in the logo for the local paper Peninsula Beacon. This is also the same area where you’ll find the Point Loma tide pools.

Want a new perspective on the area? Head to the San Diego Bay! We recommend the Semi-Private Bay Cruise which is a lot of fun and a great way to make your trip unique.
