San Diego's Festive 5K - The Santa Run Returns in 2025!

Santas Beyond the Eye Can See at the San Diego Santa RunKids Playing in the Snow at the San Diego Santa Run

One of San Diego's beloved traditions, and one of my family's personal favorites, is returning in 2025 for its 13th year!

I still remember the first time I stumbled upon the Santa Run. I was grabbing a coffee at a little coffee shop in Pacific Beach when suddenly hundreds of Santas came running down the street. It stopped me in my tracks. It was a wildly hilarious, totally over-the-top wave of red pouring through PB.

My daughter was with me, only about four at the time, and she absolutely lit up. Watching her excitement made the moment even better.

Ever since that day, it's become one of our go-to holiday traditions. We participate every year as it's basically in our front yard, and it never gets old. The energy, the costumes, the sheer ridiculous fun of it all - it's one of those events that just puts us in the holiday spirit!

For me, it's genuinely one of the things I look forward to most during the Christmas season in Pacific Beach!

What is the San Diego Santa Run?

The San Diego Santa Run is California's largest Santa Run Event. Organized by the San Diego Running Co., it has grown significantly over the years. Cumulatively, over 40,000 Santas have run in the event but I can say from personal experience that it feels like 40,000 each year!

Participants and observers can enjoy various runs throughout the day, including a 5K, a kid's 1-mile run, and a dog 1-mile run. The PB Holiday Parade is the grand finale.

So, whether you're planning on running or just coming to root for the Santas, it's definitely a uniquely San Diego holiday season event that you won't want to miss!

When and Where is the Santa Run?

The annual Santa Run for 2025 will start and finish at '900 Garnet Ave, San Diego', on Saturday, Dec. 13th, 2025. You'll want to look for the Bank of America.

We've also seen the address of '875 Garnet Ave, San Diego' and '912 Garnet Ave, San Diego' listed as the race location this year. Just know that all of these locations are basically within one block and will get you where you need to go!

What are the Race Times?

I can say that San Diego's warm weather really shines in the winter months with frequent sunny blue skies and warm temperatures, but rain or shine, the Santa Run will be an incredible experience!

  • First Wave 5K: 8:00am
  • Second Wave 5K: 10:00am
  • Kids 1-Mile: 11:30am

Who is the Santa Run For?

The Santa Run ensures everyone can get involved. The 5K run is for people over 12, while the Kids 1 Mile is for children 12 and under. And with the Dog 1 Mile, even your furry friends can get into the act.

Note, only the first 5K race has an age group award, so if you're running for time, or looking to be the fastest in your class, that may be the one for you.

Of course there are no restrictions on who can watch the parade so bring your whole family!

Voted the "Best Fun Run" by USA TODAY

The annual Santa Run features thousands of spectators and runners dressed up in their crimson best. The Santa Run's sea of red suits is a hilarious part of the holiday, and since I live in Pacific Beach, one I can recommend from multiple years of attending the event.

To me, the Santa Run is pure holiday joy - a wave of Santa's sprinting through my neighborhood of Pacific Beach with unforgettable energy, is something you have to see to believe. It's become a holiday tradition my family looks forward to every year.

And bragging rights where they're due, the 5K event has been voted USA TODAY's readers' choice best fun run three years in a row!

Local Tips
Arrive Early for Best Parking & Photos
As a Pacific Beach local, I recommend arriving at least 45 minutes before your wave time. Street parking fills up fast, and you'll want time to snap photos with fellow Santas before the race. The energy builds as more red suits arrive, making for unforgettable pre-race moments!

Registration & Participation

The Santa Run's festive, and I would even dare to call it 'jolly', atmosphere makes this 5K a truly one-of-a-kind experience. As a Santa Run regular at this point, I can personally highly recommend participating for the experience and laughs, if not for the fitness as well!

The 5K is open to runners and walkers at all fitness levels. It's equally perfect for serious runners looking for a challenge and families looking for a fun holiday-themed outdoor activity.

Let's have a look at your options, what you'll get, and of course, how much each option will cost!

Course Details, the Parade and So Much More!

The 2025 races themselves are the highlight of the event, but there's a lot more!

The race concludes with the Pacific Beach Holiday Parade. This lively parade has floats, marching bands, and some of the best community groups, local businesses, and charities from the area.

I'd also like to tell you about the PB Challenge, tell you where I suggest my out-of-town friends stay for the weekend and more!

Course Details

Both the starting and finishing lines will be at 900 Garnet Ave, San Diego, CA 92109.

If you decide to participate, you'll be looking at a 3.13-mile course with a 133-foot elevation gain. While there is no course cut-off time, walkers are encouraged to keep a 20-minute per mile pace. This way, the race can stay on schedule for the following waves.

Have a look at the course map which only runs on two streets in 2025, Garnet Avenue and Cass Street.

The Pacific Beach Holiday Parade

The post-race drinks and party all lead up to the vibrant, colorful, and, in my humble opinion, super fun Holiday Parade that's scheduled to begin at 1:00pm!

With floats, music, and a very merry atmosphere, the Pacific Beach Parade is the perfect and memorable end to the day.

Run PB Challenge

If you really love to run or just like taking part in races, then I suggest that you join the Run PB Challenge.

When you sign up and complete the three San Diego Running Co. events held in Pacific Beach in the same calendar year, you'll receive a special RUN PB Challenge bib at each race as well as a massive finisher's medal upon completion.

The three races in the challenge are the San Diego Leprechaun Run, Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K, and the San Diego Santa Run.

Given that the Santa Run is the final event of the year, your best bet is to sign up for the 2026 series with the Leprechaun Run, the Pacific Beach Half Marathon & 5K, and the Santa Run. The first two in the series are already taking registrations for next year!

Where to Stay Near the Santa Run

If you're coming in from out-of-town, tired after the race, or just want to use the race as an opportunity to take in more San Diego holiday activities, I'd suggest you book a room at the TOWER23 Hotel. It's one of my favorite choices for a staycation in San Diego and at less than half a mile from the start line, it's very conveniently located for the Santa Run.

My wife and I just love the oceanfront rooms. There's also a fantastic restaurant onsite called JRDN. And if you really want to celebrate, check out their special offers and packages.

If you want more hotel options our team at Go Visit San Diego loves in Pacific Beach and throughout San Diego, check out our hotels section to explore additional options.

Supporting the Community through Holiday Traditions

The Santa Run isn't just a race; it's also the perfect opportunity to give back to the community while supporting local charities and organizations.

Benefiting the Pacific Beach Holiday Parade

Every year, the non-profit organization Discover Pacific Beach works with businesses in Pacific Beach to not only promote the community, businesses, and welcome visitors, but to ensure the continuation of the holiday parade for years to come.

Through year-round events, Discover Pacific Beach has helped to revitalize the community, and the Santa Run is one of their premier events.

So, How Does Santa Run Fund the Parade?

With costs quickly mounting to host the parade, including street closures, permits, portable bathrooms, and so much more, the holiday parade often deals with the threat of cancellation. In fact, organizers cancelled the parade a few times because of a lack of funds.

This is exactly where the Santa Run enters the story!

In 2013, the people behind the Santa Run decided to run the race on the same route as the parade to share, and one day, completely cover the parade's expenses.

Thirteen years and thousands of Santas later, the Santa Run has helped Discover Pacific Beach save money while also bringing hundreds of guests into the community to run, eat, and explore Pacific Beach.

Team Hoyt San Diego

The Santa Run also supports the non-profit organization, Team Hoyt San Diego.

Team Hoyt San Diego aims to build the "individual character, self-confidence, and self-esteem of America's disabled young people through inclusion in all facets of daily life."

From community activities, family life, and sports, the organization assists families in achieving their goals, including in races and triathlons.

Team Hoyt San Diego is inspired by the father-son duo, Dick and Rick Hoyt, who competed together in over 1,100 endurance events.

Embracing the Spirit of Giving and Togetherness

The holidays are always the perfect time to come together in the community to take part in seasonal activities and events. The Santa Run is an ideal example of an outdoor holiday celebration that welcomes everyone.

So, lace up your running shoes and join the San Diego Santa Run for a unique chance to support the local community and spread some holiday cheer.

Parking & Transportation: Getting to the Fun Part

Parking and transportation can be challenging, especially considering Garnet St. will be closed off for the race. However, these tips will help reduce stress as you navigate to the race.

Getting There

If you're driving to the race, you'll want to head toward Pacific Beach and either find street parking, which honestly as a local to Pacific Beach I can say may be close to impossible, or navigate to your paid parking lot.

Public Transportation Options

Considering all the traffic, I just might grab a San Diego rideshare, jump on the San Diego Trolley, or take the MTS bus if I were you.

The best transit hub to aim for from the Trolley is the Balboa Avenue Transit Center. From there you'll be looking at a short MTS bus ride, just under 3 mile walk or run if you want to warm-up, or a quick Uber or Lyft to as close as they can get you on race morning.

Where Should I Park?

The event parking lot is located at 800-898 Horrnblend St. in San Diego. However, there are other paid parking lots throughout the area.

I recommend putting the address of the parking lot directly into your GPS and choosing a route that avoids Garnet. Also, I suggest you know what lot you're using and pay for parking in advance, so you don't have to navigate around the area for the cheapest and closest spot.

Know Before You Go: Getting the Most Out of Your Experience

Here are a few more things to keep in mind, to ensure that you have a great time and don't encounter any awkward situations.

Are Strollers Welcome?

Strollers are welcome in all waves. And for our creative and crafty readers, decorated strollers are encouraged!

How Can I Redeem My Drink Ticket?

You can use your complimentary drink ticket which is attached to your bib at Mavericks Beach Club, Tavern on the Beach, or 710 Beach Club or Bar Ella to celebrate post-run.

Be sure to have your ID with you in order to redeem your ticket.

How Do I Volunteer?

You can volunteer by emailing volunteers@sandiegorunningco.com.

How Do I Pick Up My Race Packet?

The Santa Run website lists various times and locations where you can pick up your race packet before race day with Road Runner Sports being your Thursday, December 11th location and the Pacific Beach parking lot at 800 Hornblend street being your Friday, December 12th location. Bibs will be available both days from 2:00pm until 6:00pm.

If you don't pick it up in advance, you can collect it the day of the race, for a $5 fee. You can also have the package mailed to you for $17.50, although that option expires on Nov. 28th, 2025.

Is There a Difference Between the 8:00am and 10:00am 5K?

Organizers created two wave times to accommodate both early risers and snooze button aficionados like me!

That being said, only participants in the 8:00am wave are eligible for the Age Group Awards. Both waves will still be chip timed meaning every participant in the 8:00am wave, 10:00am wave, and Kids Run will get their timed results!

Can I Run If I Don't Own a Santa Suit?

Yes! Everyone is welcome to partake in the Santa Run in their best - or ugliest - Christmas attire!

Of course, if you don't own a Santa suit, no problem! I really love the fact that if you don't have your own Santa outfit like me, that's OK because the big guy's iconic red outfit is included in your 5K registration fee!

Where Should I Eat Before or After the Race?

Since I personally live in Pacific Beach, I can totally answer this question! Here are some of my favorites spots to fuel up or chill out in Pacific Beach.
