The annual Gator by the Bay festival is once again returning to San Diego, bringing with it four full days of dancing, feasting, and family-friendly activities.

I’m super excited to report that I will be in attendance with my wife this year. If you’ve looked around Go Visit San Diego you already know that I’m a huge fan of San Diego’s events and festivals.

In year’s past, the annual Ocean Beach Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off set for June 28th, 2025 this year has been the festival I’ve most looked forward to. But in 2025 with Gator by the Bay’s dynamite lineup of musical acts and extensive list of food vendors, I think it just might be the event to beat!

As the largest and most authentic Louisiana-style festival on the West Coast, the lively event by the beautiful San Diego Bay is set to shine a spotlight on Cajun and Creole culture through live music, food, and a contagious atmosphere!

Tickets & Admission

Bourbon Street Stage at Gator by the Bay
Bourbon Street Stage at Gator by the Bay

Ticket options have expanded in 2025 to include special Patron Passes and table seating tickets in addition to the single and multi-day tickets that have been offered in the past.

At Go Visit San Diego we run a family-friendly site always looking for events and activities that adults and kids can enjoy together. We especially love when those events are budget-friendly and so it’s worth noting right up front that kids 17 and under can attend for free of charge with a paying adult!

Let’s have a look at the ticket options for 2025.

Ticket Options

Tickets can be purchased online. Prices vary based on the day of the week, type of pass, and number of days you’d like to attend.

Thursday Kick-off Dance Tickets

Thursday May 8th marks the beginning of the festival in 2025 with an opening night concert. Gates open at 4:00pm but do know that the entire festival grounds won’t be open.

Two types of tickets are available, a general admission ticket and a table seating ticket that sounds really fun to me. This ticket includes entry plus a catered dinner with wine and dessert costing extra.

  • Thursday Kick-off Dance: $68
  • Thursday Kick-off Dance + Table Seating: $164

General Admission Tickets

General admission tickets are available in single day or multi-day options.

Gates open at: 4:00pm on Thursday, 4:00pm on Friday, 10:30am on Saturday, and 10:30am on Sunday. Note that the festival ground won’t be open on Thursday and only half of the grounds will be open on Friday.

  • Friday General Admission: $78
  • Saturday General Admission: $88
  • Sunday General Admission: $83
  • Any Single Day General Admission: $88
  • 3-Day General Admission Pass (Fri-Sun): $232
  • 4-Day General Admission Pass (Thurs-Sun): $275

Remember, kids 17 and under are free with a paying adult!

Military and First Responders Discounts

A 20% discount is also available for Military and First Responders including law enforcement, fire, and EMS. The promo is through the GOVX Marketplace and valid only for general admission ticket options.

Patron Passes

Every now and then I’ll splurge for the VIP passes to a San Diego event and really think the added value is worth the extra price. And while I think any general admission pass in 2025 would be great, the experience offered with the Gator by the Bay Patron Passes is clearly a step up!

On top of admission to the festival you’ll also receive special access to the water front Patron Area. This Patron Pass only area includes complimentary beverages from 11:00am - 5:00pm and a catered lunch from 1:00pm - 3:00pm on both Saturday and Sunday. It also offers table seating with scenic views and VIP restrooms.

New for 2025, the ultimate 4-Day Patron Pass with Thursday Table Seating is the pass I’d recommend if you want to go all out! On top of the Patron Pass only areas access on the weekend, it also includes table seating and a meal for the Thursday night kick-off concert and Friday access to the new Bourbon Street Patron Area which includes complimentary beverages from 4:00pm – 8:00pm.

As an added bonus, all Patron Pass holders will receive a 20% discount on official event posters & t-shirts.

  • Patron Pass Saturday: $254
  • Patron Pass Sunday: $249
  • 2-Day Patron Pass: (Sat & Sun): $487
  • New for 2025: 4-Day Patron Pass with Thursday Table Seating: $633

Saturday Night Dance Party Tickets

If you are more interested in dancing than attending the festival itself, the May 10th Saturday Night Dance Party at the Sheraton Hotel could be for you. While it doesn’t include admission to the festival, you will get to dance to some pretty awesome music.

Doors open at 8:00pm with a dance lesson scheduled for 8:15pm.

  • Saturday Night Dance at the Sheraton Hotel (festival admission not included): $32

Music Lineup & Tasty Food at Gator by the Bay

With five stages and over 100 live music acts, the diversity in artists is only matched by the array of delicious food choices at the Bourbon Street Food Court.

I’ll be attending with my wife on Sunday as she has given the OK for us to go right from a delicious Mother’s Day brunch to the lively Gator by the Bay event. Yes, she is an amazing woman for sure!

I’m looking forward to the Latin jazz funk sounds of San Diego’s own grammy-winner Ozomatli performing Sunday, May 11th at 4:40pm on the Mardi Gras Stage.

If we could catch a bit of country star Kimmi Bitter set for 5:20pm on the Bourbon St. Stage I’d also be very excited for that performance. Kimmi just swept the San Diego Music Awards winning both Song of the Year and Best Country/Americana Album. She brings vintage soul with a Western flair and I really love her style.

Those two performers are my favorites but with 100+ performances scheduled for the event, many by 2025 SDMA winners, there really is something for everyone!

2025 Performer Lineup

The 2025 festival will include renowned names in the blues and zydeco music scenes, from Louisiana natives to globally-beloved acts, all performing across four musical stages.

There will also be rock, country, swamp pop, jazz, R&B, bluegrass, western swing, boogie, salsa, and rockabilly performers.

Thursday Performance Highlights

Thursday May 8th will kick-off at 4:20pm with the swing, jazz and blues of the Gypsy Swing Cats.

The night will finish with another one of my favorites, the rockabilly tunes of James Intveld and the Honky Tonk Palominos set for 9:00pm sharp!

Friday Performance Highlights

On Friday May 9th, Main Festival Stage highlights for me include the opener at 4:20pm, Ruben Moreno & the Zydeco Re-Evolution and the 8:10pm performance by Nathan & the Zydeco Cha Chas.

My Bourbon Stage highlight for Friday for you would be the 9:20pm blues performance by Whitney Shay.

Weekend Performance Highlights

Saturday and Sunday are the festival's biggest days with artists set to perform on all four festival stages starting at 11:00am.

A few suggestions I would give you for Saturday, May 10th, would be to check out Wayne Singleton & Same Ol’ 2 Step on the Main Stage at 1:50pm. The group has a strong southwest Louisiana zydeco sound that I think is very unique.

Also on Saturday, try and catch the blues of Sugaray Rayford on the Mardi Gras Stage set for 5:30pm. The blues of Zavala Sol at 7:20pm on the Bayou Grove Stage would be one more to consider.

On Sunday, Sunday May 11th you can’t go wrong with the Cajun swamp pop music of the Revelers set for 12:20pm on the Main Stage.

Obviously the aforementioned Ozomatli performance on the Mardi Gras Stage at 4:40pm is the one I’m most excited about and you could close the night out with the Kimmi Bitter followed by Chicken Bone Slim with Laura Chavez both performing on the Bourbon St. Stage.

Great Food at Gator by the Bay

Food Vendors

I love live music so for me that is the main draw to the festival. But I also absolutely love the flavors of creole cuisine.

You can fill up on classic New Orleans fare at the Bourbon Street Food Court like Louisiana-raised crawfish bakes and beignets from vendors. My must-try favorites include jambalaya, gumbo, po’boys, and bread pudding.

The Taste of Louisiana Cooking Stage

In addition to the four stages set for musical performances, 2025 will also feature a stage dedicated entirely to cooking demonstrations!

There will be Southern chefs showing you how it’s done on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The experiences will be hands-on, like a cooking class, which is exciting to say the least.

I’m looking forward to the demonstration by Mitch Oliver from the Crawfish Corner. From what I know about Mitch, he seems like a true Cajun that knows how to peel, pinch and enjoy crawfish. Louisiana’s own Crawfish King brings about 10,000 pounds of fresh crawfish to the event every year!

I also love gumbo so Melissa Anderson from Bon Filé Creole Café will have my attention on Sunday at 2:30pm.

Dancing & Family Fun

Dancing at Gator by the Bay
Dancing at Gator by the Bay

Gator by the Bay’s Mardi Gras in May celebration is completely family-friendly, and kids are invited to all areas of the event. Here are some fun things to do for all ages!

Costumed Parades & Dancing

Kids are invited to watch the Mardi Gras parade set for 1:30pm on Saturday, where vibrantly-costumed performers become the life of the party. They can also let off some steam at the Lil Gatorz Kidz Zone.

Want to join in the fun? The festival dance floor at the Bon Temps Social Club Dance Pavilion is open to all ages. There will also be free country dance lessons taught by skilled instructors. Honestly though, with so many stages, you’re free to get up and dance throughout the festival!

Shopping and Crafting

You can check out the market area to shop the wares of dozens of vendors. There, you’ll find handmade goods, including Mardi Gras-themed clothing and jewelry.

Plus, kids can create commemorative hats with crazy designs with a little help from the festival’s resident Rad Hatter!

Getting to the Event & Parking

I love the location of the event along the water overlooking the docks filled with rows and rows of boats. Just south of the San Diego International Airport (SAN) on the north side of the San Diego Bay, there should be a nice breeze and beautiful atmosphere.

But I will be honest and say that getting there is not the easiest task. If you’re planning on driving, finding parking can be a challenge. It’s a good thing that I know the area really well and am here to help!

What is the Best Way to Get to Gator by the Bay?

Finding the Gator by the Bay event on the map is quite easy!

Conveniently located in the Point Loma neighborhood at the Spanish Landing Park – East, right along the beautiful San Diego Bay, if you’re coming in from the San Diego International Airport (SAN), you’re in luck! The airport is literally across the street and just a 5 minute rideshare like Uber or Lyft, or 6 minute walk by foot.

The festival grounds are located along North Harbor Drive with the festival entrance on Harbor Island Drive.

While you could drive and there will be parking (see below), we think that the best way to get to the event is to take the Trolley to the Middletown Station which would drop you about 1.70 miles away. From there you could walk the 40 minutes or grab a rideshare.

As a longtime local I can give you another suggestion. Take the Trolley to the Middletown Station, cross the Pacific Highway to get to the car rental center. From there jump on a shuttle to Terminal 1 and then walk the rest of the way which should be less than 10 minutes by foot.

One more option would be to park away from the venues in Downtown San Diego and grab the electric shuttle service, the FRED Shuttle which could take you to about the Bravo Dock in Harborview, which is just over a mile away from the venue.

Where Can I Park?

There are three parking lots in Spanish Landing Park. If these fill up, street parking won’t be easy to find but could be possible if you get lucky.

There will also be limited parking at the Sheraton Harbor Island dirt lot at 1380 Harbor Island Drive. You’ll want to enter this lot from the Island Drive side and the cost will be $40 per day.

An additional option will be parking at the Airport Terminal 2 Parking Plaza located at 3703 North Harbor Drive. The cost will be $35 per day if reserved in advance through the San International Airport parking service.

Note that the parking lot at the Hampton Inn used in past years will not be available this year due to construction.

I can say that parking won’t be easy and I wouldn’t recommend driving in as your first choice. But if you must drive to the Gator by the Bay event, I’d suggest parking for free at a Trolley station or the Old Town Transit Station, Liberty Station or Shelter Island.

Then I suggest you take an Uber or Lyft to the official rideshare drop-off which is located at the West festival entrance at Airport Terminal Rd. & Harbor Drive.

Tips & FAQs

Playing Music at the Gator by the Bay - Photo by Mike Reardon
Playing Music at the Gator by the Bay - Photo by Mike Reardon

We’ve covered a lot so far but there are still a few more details I’d like to cover. Also, I’ll give you the answers to a few FAQs so you can be prepared to have an awesome time at this year’s festival.

Is Food Included with my Admission Ticket?

The culinary delights and creole classics will be on full display during the festival. For me personally, I love that style of food and know that we even have a member of our team that thinks creole cuisine is the best food America has to offer. Those are big words!

If it’s like last year’s event, the variety will be incredible with gumbo, crawfish, jambalaya and so much more, but unfortunately food will not be included with a general admission ticket.

However, the Thursday Kick-off Dance + Table Seating ticket does include dinner as does the Saturday Patron Pass, Sunday Patron Pass, and 2-Day Patron Pass which includes a catered lunch on both weekend days.

You could also go big with a 4-Day Patron Pass with Thursday Table Seating which would include the dinner on Thursday and catered lunch in the Patron Pass area on both Saturday and Sunday.

With a general admission ticket, food and drinks will be available for purchase.

How Can I Get Free Admission?

The event offers volunteer opportunities each day for activities like greeters, guides, cart drivers, clean-up crew, talent check-in, signage set-up, wristband check and more!

Time slots are limited but still available for 2025 and include complimentary admission to the event and a Gator by the Bay Volunteer t-shirt which you’re asked to wear during your shift.

Can I Bring My Dog?

I know how animals can become part of your family. You want to bring them along everywhere you can, perhaps to grab a great picture with your pet and even post it on their Instagram page.

Unfortunately for the safety and comfort of everyone in attendance, pets are not allowed at the event. Service animals with marked vests however are welcomed to attend!

What Can I Bring to the Festival & What Should be Left at Home?

While all you really need to bring is comfortable clothes including quality walking shoes, sunglasses and a hat, plus perhaps a credit or debit card for food and merchandise, you can also bring a few extra.

Attendees can bring a low-back chair no taller than 35”, a blanket, small fanny pack or purse, personal sized umbrella, and one small (sealed) bottle of water.

Items that should be left at home include large umbrellas, tents, high-back chairs, coolers, glass containers, illegal substances, outside food and drinks, and of course pets!
