Del Mar Horse Races where the Turf Meets the Surf
I think it’s fair to say that the races are the star of the show on Opening Day, but there’s lots to do at the racetrack outside of betting as well.
Opening Day has some of the most beloved events for thoroughbred enthusiasts and San Diego locals with festivities continuing throughout the summer and fall seasons. If you’ve never been before, there really isn’t a bad day to attend, but if you can make it to Opening Day, you’re in for a real treat!
Opening Day Hat Contest
The popular Opening Day Hat Contest is back! This is an annual tradition, and there’s no surer sign that the season has begun than spotting a sea of incredible, creative DIY hats in the stands.
From 11:30am to 3:00pm in the Plaza de Mexico, hundreds of race ready hat creations will be vying for the ultimate bragging rights in four categories:
- Best Racing Theme
- Most Glamorous
- Best Fascinator
- Best Flowers
Winners will be announced after the 6th race, and with over $5,000 this year in prize money divided among the winners and runners up, we hope you’ll have your hat in the race!
The Party
If you want to step up your Opening Day celebration, The Party is an exclusive, ticketed event at the Seaside Cabana for 21 and up guests.
Complete with private wagering and track views, The Party also features a cocktail bar, craft beers, a photo booth, and live DJs.
Celebrity Grill
Just above the Del Mar Paddock is the Space Dust Celebrity Grill, which hosts a private party on Opening Day, and you are invited.
Highlights include buffet-style dining and a menu of specialty cocktails plus incredible views of the track and a lively energy that will add to your experience.
Champions’ Terrace
For the ultimate horse racing experience on Opening Day, grabbing tickets to The Champions' Terrace is the way to go!
The event includes access to a private, air-conditioned lounge that also includes a buffet and signature cocktails. I personally love the views overlooking the Del Mar paddock and Pacific Ocean.
Unfortunately, The Champions' Terrace is sold out for opening day 2025 but I can recommend grabbing tickets for the 2026 season if you really love horse racing.
The Grand
If you are looking for an experience and budget is no object, consider watching from the Turf Club East Terrace, one of the classiest ways to visit the races with a buffet and drinks by a master mixologist.
Tickets are pricey at over $1,000 a pop, but proceeds benefit California Retirement Management Account (CARMA), which assists retired racehorses in California.
Official After Pony Party
The best way to close out Opening Day is at the After Pony Party, hosted at Rancho Valencia. Your ticket gets you a 5-star buffet, a complimentary welcome cocktail, and a specially-curated set by DJ Murphi - plus plenty of space to dance!
