Comparing Halloween Spooktacular at SeaWorld San Diego vs. HalGLOWeen at the San Diego Zoo

There is nothing quite like the fall season and Halloween in San Diego!

I love that there are so many family-friendly events designed for young kids and teens to enjoy during the season. If you’re lucky enough to get to go to one (or a few) of the seasonal events at a local theme park or attraction, I can certainly say that you won’t hear your kids tell you that they’re bored!

And if you have small children, say Elementary school age or in the 12 and under crowd, two events that should be on your radar to celebrate this Halloween are the Halloween Spooktacular at SeaWorld San Diego and HalGLOWeen at the San Diego Zoo.

As big fans of both SeaWorld San Diego and the San Diego Zoo, I can tell you that these spots never disappoint for family-friendly spooky seasonal surprises!

The Holiday Family Fun Showdown!

Halloween Spooktacular is SeaWorld San Diego’s festive holiday event for all ages, unlike Howl-O-Scream, which it also hosts, which is geared towards teens and adults. (A family favorite in my household for sure!)

This year boasts a pirate theme full of interactive games, live music, a scavenger hunt, trick-or-treating stations, and much more Halloween fun!

Halloween Spooktacular started on Saturday, September 6th and will continue through the month of October on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through Sunday, November 2nd, 2025.

The fun starts when the park opens at 10:00am and continues until it closes at 7:00pm.

HalGLOWeen at the San Diego Zoo has a fun glow-in-the-dark theme with lighting and special effects that is also geared toward smaller children. There’s live music and entertainment, live animal encounters, character meet & greets, and more!

HalGLOWeen runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings during October 2025. The fun kicks off at 5:00pm and lasts until the zoo closes at 9:00pm.

Spooktacular or HalGLOWeen? A Tough Choice for Sure!

While both of these events take all age, family-friendly fun to a new level, deciding which one to go to can be tough. While they might have a similar target audience, and thus have similarities, there’s actually a lot of differences between the two seasonal events as well!

And that’s where a team of locals that know the events well can help! If you’re not sure which direction to head, our handy guide will help lead you on the path that makes the most sense for your family this Halloween!

Local Tips
Early Bird Trick-or-Treat Tip
At SeaWorld's Halloween Spooktacular, head to the trick-or-treat candy trail as soon as you arrive. It's located near the park entrance and gets very crowded with long lines after 2:00 PM. Going early ensures your kids get their treats without the frustration of a long wait.

Budget-Friendly Fun: Comparing What Each Will Cost (Including Parking)

When you’re bringing the whole family along, cost can certainly be a big factor in deciding which event to attend.

How Much is Admission to Halloween Spooktacular at SeaWorld San Diego?

SeaWorld San Diego offers a few different ticket options, including Single-Day Tickets, Two-Day Tickets, Any Day Tickets, 2026 Fun Cards, and more!

General admission to SeaWorld San Diego currently costs between $70–$118 for adults and $57 for kids. Kids under 3 get in free.

During the month of October if you have enough adults in your party, you won’t have to pay the $57 for a kids ticket. As part of the Kid Free San Diego program, one kid 12 and under can get in FREE with each full-price paying adult. More on that below.

General parking is $25 with a closer parking option for $28, and VIP parking costing $35. RV and camper parking is $30.

It’s also worth noting that if you have a season pass, it might include free parking. Our founder Todd let me know that when he takes his family to SeaWorld with his season pass, parking is included free.

All of the 2025 HalGLOWeen events and activities are included, free of charge, with regular admission.

During the month of October, kids 11 and under get in for FREE as part of the Kids Free San Diego program! It gets even better…one adult who pays regular admission can bring up to 6 kids ages 11 and under for FREE to the San Diego Zoo, and HalGLOWeen!

That’s an amazing deal if you have a large family. Regular day passes for adults start at $76.

Parking Cost for HalGLOWeen at the San Diego Zoo

Free street parking is available around Balboa Park. You’ll also find a few lots where you can park for free as well, the biggest being right in front of the zoo off Park Boulevard. As a local tip though, the earlier you arrive, the better spot you can get!

There’s also a free shuttle from Inspiration Point to the zoo which is a nice perk for sure.

Save With a Go City San Diego Pass

You can save on tickets to both attractions with a Go City San Diego pass when you use our discount code GVSD5OFF.

Honestly getting a Go City San Diego pass makes a lot of sense for the adults not needing to pay full price to get the kids in for free. It’s an incredible deal, even in October, that we recommend to our friends, family, and readers like yourself!

Kids Free San Diego in October Program

As mentioned above, both SeaWorld San Diego and the San Diego Zoo are part of the Kids Free San Diego program in October.

The deal gives one FREE kid’s ticket with the purchase of one full-priced adult ticket at SeaWorld San Diego and up to six FREE kid’s tickets with the purchase of one full-priced adult ticket at the San Diego Zoo.

Budget-Friendly Winner: HalGLOWeen

Hands down, HalGLOWeen is the budget-friendly winner. When you can get 6 kids in for FREE with one adult purchase, you can’t beat that! Plus, there’s also free parking.

It’s All About Location!

Both Halloween events take place in incredible locations, but there are some key differences to be aware of before you go.

Seaworld from Mission Bay with Downtown San Diego in the Background
Seaworld from Mission Bay with Downtown San Diego in the Background

Where is SeaWorld San Diego?

SeaWorld San Diego is located in Mission Bay Park. It’s easy to park in the area with other attractions like Belmont Park and their Beachside Fall Fest, and Mission Bay itself right there. I personally love to take my stand-up paddleboard (SUP) or kayak out on Mission Bay, but I’d also recommend relaxing on one of Mission Bay Park’s beaches, having a picnic, or even fishing in the area.

SeaWorld San Diego is also quite handicap accessible with paved sidewalks and wheelchair rentals available.

Where is the San Diego Zoo?

You’ll find the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park, just minutes from Downtown San Diego. The park has green space and trails, cafes and family-friendly museums, gardens and more! It’s also where you’ll find one of Todd’s son’s favorite Halloween attractions, the Haunted Trail at Balboa Park, an awesome attraction for teenagers and adults.

When you visit the San Diego Zoo, I can say that most of the park is paved and that wheelchairs and electronic conveyance vehicles are available to rent.

Comparing Locations Winner: HalGLOWeen at the San Diego Zoo

As someone who loves both locations and has been to both many times, I would say the San Diego Zoo has the better location. Balboa Park makes it a great spot when it comes to parking and easy access by public transit.

Comparing the Things to Do at Each Event

I love both of these events because they offer so many activities! Let’s have a look at both and compare the special family-friendly fun at each event.

Halloween Spooktacular Fun

If you attend Halloween Spooktacular, I suggest that you put these activities on your to-do list. The kids will thank you later!

  • Spookley Dance Party (new for 2025)
  • Bones Brother Quartet (new for 2025)
  • Character Meet & Greets
  • Trick-or-Treating Candy Stations
  • Live Musical Performances (Local Tip: don’t miss the Pirate Sea Shanty Band!)
  • The Manta Rollercoaster - with a special Halloween-themed multimedia for the season

It’s a good thing that you have all day at the park so you can pace yourself and get all of these activities in!

HalGLOWeen Must-See Activities

HalGLOWeen is also a crowd-pleaser with these 2025 standout activities being my family’s personal favorites.

  • DJ Front Street
  • Interactive Fun with Boo Crew and Python Path
  • Dance with the Boolahoops (Local Tip: Complete with family games and prizes, if you’re kids like to sing & dance, they’ll probably love this event.)
  • Dr. Zoolittle
  • Wildlife Explorers Basecamp
  • Spider’s W.E.B.
  • The Glow-Go’s (animated pumpkins)

Since these activities are all in the evening and at night, from 5:00pm to 9:00pm, be sure your little kids take a nap during the day, so they’re ready to party until close.

More to See and Do Winner: Halloween Spooktacular

While both offer plenty of activities for kids, teens and even adults, SeaWorld’s Halloween Spooktacular comes out on top in this category.

The event offers more classic Halloween fun like trick-or-treating, themed shows, and of course the park’s rides, making it slightly more exciting for kids craving candy and variety.

Comparing the Attraction Sizes

Consider how much ground you have to cover with those tiny feet in tote and how much time you have to see it all. Size does matter here – so let’s compare each event’s total size.

Visiting the Halloween Spooktacular at SeaWorld San Diego

Everywhere you turn, there is something to do at the Halloween Spooktacular. Don’t forget, you can choose to be here all day as the event kicks off at 10:00am, offering a maximum of nine hours to explore.

This will give you time to do and see a lot, and still sit and rest, without feeling like you’re going to miss out on something.

The Ins and Outs of the San Diego Zoo

Many of the exhibits that are open during the day are closed during HalGLOWeen. While that may seem unfortunate, we’re talking about live animals that have to rest and sleep, so it really does make sense.

But consider that with less ground to cover and a shorter time to do it in, this can be the better option if you’re looking for a quicker event, four hours maximum, that will still get you in the holiday spirit.

As a bonus tip, if your kids love animals like mine, visit the San Diego Zoo’s sister park, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido for their Autumn Festival. That park is much larger with lots of animals and a fantastic seasonal event in October as well.

The Larger Attraction Winner: Halloween Spooktacular at SeaWorld

If you’re looking for a full day of family fun, the Halloween Spooktacular is the way to go so that’s our winner for this category.

But you can also make memories at HalGLOWeen in a shorter time, which can be an incredible choice and more than enough for families with small kids.

Spooktacular Additions

At the Halloween Spooktacular, rides will be open, including the park’s newest coaster, Arctic Rescue. Manta will feature a special Halloween-themed multimedia show just for the fall season as well!

You’ll also want to take part in the scavenger hunt and take a trip to the waterfront pumpkin patch. And don’t forget about all of the tasty limited-time seasonal treats that are available along the way. My suggestion for you is that if you find one of the park’s pumpkin cupcakes, don’t wait, buy it!

For an extra special experience, participate in the 2nd annual SeaWorld San Diego Howl-O-Sprint 5k run on Sunday, October 19th. The 5k starts at 7:00am with the kids 1-mile Fun Run starting at 8:30am. You’ll get a nice t-shirt and finishers will get a cool price, a special medal!

If you’re lucky enough to visit on November 1st or 2nd, be sure to check out the Día de los Muertos celebrations, with catrina statues and more. This is just one of the many incredible Día de los Muertos celebrations scheduled in San Diego this year!

More Than the Glow!

There’s also the Día de los Muertos Mariachi band that circles the area for 30-minute shows at the top of every hour.

Where to Go for Unique Additions Winner: Halloween Spooktacular at SeaWorld

With the rides and day-long activities, plus all of the live music and chance to be part of the SeaWorld San Diego Howl-O-Sprint 5k run, the Halloween Spooktacular is the winner here when it comes to special experiences and add-ons!

Tips for Visiting One vs. the Other Attraction

Kid Using Hand Binoculars on the Pirate Ship at Seaworld San Diego

You’ll want to make the most of your trip, no matter which one you choose. Now that you know a lot about both, here are a few more local tips you’ll want to know!

Halloween Spooktacular Insider Tips

  • Costumes are allowed, but guests 13 and older cannot wear masks and hoods.
  • Plan 4-6 hours for the Spooktacular events, but if you’re doing the rides and shows, plan for a full day of fun.
  • The candy trail starts near the park entrance. I suggest that you go there early, before it gets crowded around 2:00pm.

Planning Tips for HalGLOWeen

  • Kids ages 11 and under can wear a costume; just follow the guidelines on the zoo’s website.
  • Bring a change of clothes for the kids if they want to get out of their costumes.
  • Parking fills up quickly. Park at Inspiration Point and take the free shuttle to avoid congestion.

The Overall Winner: Halloween Spooktacular at SeaWorld San Diego

Both of these events are fantastic for families with a wide range of festive fun, but for our team at Go Visit San Diego, Halloween Spooktacular comes out on top!

Halloween Spooktacular can be an all-day affair with trick-or-treating trails, themed shows, live music, character meet-and-greets, scavenger hunts, plus all the regular rides and sea-life exhibits as well!

But as a local who visits both parks for these events each year, if you want a shorter, low-stress event with glowing lights, music, and all at no extra costs from a daytime event, HalGLOWeen could also be your perfect ticket to some holiday fun!

Personally, my family is looking to hit both this year to experience all SeaWorld San Diego has to offer for Halloween Spooktacular and to catch the glow at the San Diego Zoo this Halloween season!
