A Holiday Tradition Sets Sail: The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights 2025

Many Boats at the San Diego Parade of LightsBayside Boardwalk next to Seaport Village

If you’re looking for a long-standing, classic San Diego event this holiday season, complete with Christmas lights and a lot of holiday spirit, the 55th Annual San Diego Bay Parade of Lights could be exactly what you’re looking for!

Sailboats, the San Diego skyline, holiday lights dancing on the water, and family time by the bay…what more could you ask for? The annual boat parade is definitely among the Best Holiday & Christmas Events in San Diego!

What’s the Theme for the 2025 San Diego Bay Boat Parade of Lights?

This year's organizers thought outside the box to come up with the 2025 theme. “An Out of This World Christmas” is going to put boat owners’ imaginations to the test as they decorate their boats to fit this amazing theme this holiday season.

As a boat enthusiast, I know our founder Todd is hoping to attend the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights with his family for the first time this year, excited to see some space themed holiday boats in the parade. He told me that there’s always something magical about seeing sailboats on the San Diego Bay, one of the most picturesque places to sail anywhere!

When is the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights?

The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights will take place on two magical weekend nights this year - Sunday, December 14th and Sunday, December 21st, 2025.

The procession will start at 5:30pm on both dates and follow a predetermined route that I’ll tell you all about in just a minute!

Local Tips
Beat the Crowds: Park Downtown & Ride FRED!
Parking is very limited for the parade. A great local strategy is to park in Downtown San Diego and use the FRED electric shuttle service to get to the Embarcadero. Fares are affordable, and it’s a stress-free way to avoid the traffic and find easy access to the waterfront viewing areas.

Spectator Tickets & Boat Registration

Whether you’re looking to watch as a spectator with your family or wanting to register your boat for the parade, I think you’ll be pleased to hear what being part of the holiday event will cost you!

What is the Cost to Watch the Boat Parade?

We all know that finding affordable family fun is hard these days. I’m personally always looking for free things to do in San Diego with my kids.

The good news here is that the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights is FREE to enjoy as a spectator from a number of incredible viewing locations that I’ll tell you about below.

Register Your Boat

If you’re interested in being part of the boat parade, you can register your boat on the official event site. The entry fee for private boats is just $75 until November 25th, and $100 after that date. The fee for commercial boats is $500.

Prizes will be given to boat owners with the best decorations that embody this year’s ‘Out of This World’ theme. So, I say if you do participate, be sure to go all out!

Are There any Ticketed Events for the Parade of Lights?

There is a premium experience ticketed dinner event that could really step up your experience. I’ll tell you all about it, including how much it costs a bit further down this article.

But otherwise as a spectator , all you have to do is bring a warm blanket for the seasonal San Diego weather and enjoy your time!

Beyond the Parade: Explore the San Diego Bay

If you’re going to be in town to check out the holiday boat parade or maybe you’re a local looking to explore something new in your city, then why not explore the variety of activities available around San Diego Bay?

I’d recommend checking out the San Diego Maritime Museum or the USS Midway Museum San Diego, both part of the Go City San Diego pass. The pass will guarantee you the cheapest admission price and when you use the discount code GVSD5OFF at checkout you can save even a little more!

Stay Near the Holiday Boat Parade

If you want to make an overnight experience out of the boat parade, our Go Visit San Diego team would recommend staying at the Embassy Suites by Hilton San Diego Bay Downtown. The central location will put you in a great spot to check out Downtown San Diego as well as the lively Gaslamp Quarter, hit up some amazing restaurants, and walk to the San Diego Bay for the boat parade!

As a bonus tip from a local, if you’re a seafood lover like me, I recommend checking out The Fish Market. It’s within walking distance, and everything on the menu is phenomenal!

The Parade of Lights 2025 Route & Schedule

Welcoming as many as 100,000 San Diego residents and visitors to the San Diego Bay each December, enjoying the holiday light displays on the decorated boats is the event’s main attraction.

There are typically about 80 decorated vessels, so there will surely be plenty to see! You’ll just want to know when the boats will be approaching your spot!

The Parade Schedule

The parade will start at 5:30pm on both nights and take about one and a half hours to complete. I can tell you that you’ll want to get there early because there will be crowds, especially at the more popular locations.

This is the predetermined parade route, so you can plan your night. Remember, these are approximate times, so be flexible!

  • Shelter Island (start of parade at the south end of Shelter Island) - 5:30pm

Each festive boat will proceed from the south end to the north end of Shelter Island across America’s Cup Harbor entrance to the west end of Harbor Island.

  • Harbor Island - 5:45pm – 6:15pm

The parade will then sail from the west end to the east end of Harbor Island, to just west of the Maritime Museum’s ferry, Berkeley. It will go past Berkeley and the Star of India.

  • Seaport Village - 6:20pm – 6:45pm

The boats will next go past Seaport Village and the San Diego Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina (this is another great hotel to stay at by the way!)

  • The Embarcadero - 6:50pm – 7:15pm
  • The Pier at Cesar Chavez Park - 7:20pm – 7:30pm

Once the parade reaches the new Pier at Cesar Chavez Park, it will turn south to cross the Bay to the Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa (you guessed it, another fabulous hotel).

  • Ferry Landing on Coronado - 7:40pm

Finally the parade will head west to the Coronado Ferry Landing and finish at buoy 22a.

Now that you have the schedule, you can choose one of the great spots along the route to see the show for FREE and feel the holiday cheer!

55th Annual Parade of Lights Dinner

If you want to take your experience up a notch, the Parade of Lights Dinner may be the perfect option. Hosted by the Maritime Museum of San Diego, spectators will be invited aboard the Victorian-era 1898 steam ferryboat Berkeley on either parade day.

If you participate, you’ll be served a holiday dinner buffet that I hear is very good. Dinner will start at 5:00pm and runs until 6:30pm with check-in at 4:30pm

The parade is expected to pass the north Embarcadero and the Maritime Museum of San Diego at approximately 6:20pm. Guests can check out the parade from there or go to the Star of India to see the boats from 5:00pm until 7:00pm. Just a note, there’s no food or snacks served there.

Dinner Ticket Prices

Here’s the breakdown for dinner ticket prices:

  • $70.00 for Adults, Seniors 62+, and Military
  • $35.00 for Kids (ages 6-17)
  • Children 5 and Under are Free
  • Maritime Museum of San Diego Member Tickets are $65.00 for Adults, Seniors 62+ and Military, $30.00 for Kids (ages 6-17), and 5 and Under are Free.

There is no reserved seating, so be sure to arrive early!

If you don’t want to go to dinner and just want to watch the Parade of Lights from the Star of India, tickets are $15.00 per person. This will be from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. You can[ buy tickets](https://sdmaritime.org/) for both events on the museum site.

A no host cash bar is available.

No matter which option you choose, I suggest that you wear comfortable shoes and a warm jacket or sweater because it could get chilly on the water.

Parade Parking & Helpful Transportation Tips

Downtown San Diego Fred Electric Shuttle

Nobody wants to struggle to get to this amazing event, so take a look at these helpful tips to make your visit to see the boat parade stress-free.

Where are the Best Places to Park?

It’s no secret that parking will be limited with so many visitors expected to attend. Here are some options:

  • Free parking at Harbor Island and Shelter Island
  • Metered spaces along Harbor Drive and in the parking lot in front of Fish Market restaurant north of Seaport Village
  • Paid parking at Seaport Village and Allright Parking at Broadway & Harbor Drive

As a local tip, you could park in Downtown San Diego and use the FRED electric shuttle service to get to the Embarcadero area. Fares cost $2.50 per person with a maximum of $5 per group so it’s very affordable! You could also park and then use the San Diego Pedicab service to get to the Embarcadero area. Fares cost about $1 per minute.

What are My Public Transportation Options?

I’d recommend the San Diego Trolley service which will get you within a short walk of Harbor Drive. I know our founder Todd raves about how easy it is to use every time he goes near the San Diego Bay, especially to events at PETCO Park.

The UC San Diego Blue Line or Green Line to Santa Fe Depot, or the Orange Line to Courthouse Station, are good options on the Trolley. Be sure to load money onto a PRONTO card or use the app to save time.

FREE Public Transportation for Kids

It’s good to know that on Saturdays and Sundays through the ‘Family Weekends’ program, two children (age 12 and under) can ride the San Diego Trolley for free with a fare-paying adult. This program does not require kids to have a PRONTO card.

Another option I think many visitors and locals don’t know about is the Youth Opportunity Pass (YOP) program. This one allows for anyone 18 and under to ride for FREE 7 days a week not only on the San Diego Trolley but also on the San Diego Public Buses, and North County Transit District (NCTD) COASTER and SPRINTER. All kids need is a Youth PRONTO app account, or a Youth PRONTO card.

Making the Most of Your Experience

Since the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights is a seasonal event that only takes place two days a year, you’ll want to be prepared. Below are a couple tips that should help you make the most of your experience.

Where is the Best Place to Watch the Boat Parade?

With so many choices for viewing, the first thing you’ll want to do is decide where along the route would be the most convenient. The north and south ends of the Embarcadero are great options, as well as the pathway along Coronado. People tell me these are less crowded.

And a tip from a local - the park behind Seaport Village and the new pier at Cesar Chavez Park are both premium viewing locations.

One more thing to know is that if you want to watch the parade from Harbor Island by the San Diego International Airport, it’s been my experience that parking is limited, so I suggest that you arrive early.

A Bonus Viewing Tip

If you want to learn a bit about the boats in the parade, I recommend watching from near the announcers’ areas located at the Maritime Museum on the Embarcadero and at Coronado Landing.

I think rather than just watching, getting to learn about the boats is a really fun bonus, and also adds a lot to the experience for kids. The announcers will talk about the history of the boat and describe each one as it passes by.

Watching From the Bay

If you’re a part of the boating community and want to watch the parade from the water, it can get tricky because the decorations are generally on the port side of the boats.

There aren’t many spots where you can park your boat and see the port side of the boats in the parade. Plus, the parade route is restricted to the participating boats, so what I’m saying is that if you’re not participating, it might be best to watch from the land.

Personally, I can’t wait to see photos and videos of this holiday boat parade with the reflections on the water, and the crowds along the waterfront. The Parade of Lights truly captures that coastal San Diego holiday vibe that you just can’t get anywhere else.
