Catch the Wave: Pacific Islander Cultural Festival 2025 Overview

Traditional Dancing at the Pacific Islander FestivalLots of Dances at the Pacific Islander Festival

The 2025 Pacific Islander Festival (PIF) is returning to Mission Bay Park, San Diego to mark 31 years of the incredible event! The PIF is a culture celebration complete with music, dance, art, family-friendly activities, food, and so much more!

I’m a big fan of teaching my kids about other cultures through community events and festivals. When it combines fun with education, like at many of the museums in Balboa Park, then I’m all about it!

With that in mind, we’re really looking forward to enjoying the variety of free activities for all ages that are part of the 2025 event!

When and Where is the San Diego Pacific Islander Festival 2025?

The festival will take place at Ski Beach on Saturday, September 20th and Sunday, September 21st, 2025.

Goal of the Pacific Islander Festival Association

Our team at Go Visit San Diego never misses the Pacific Islander Festival! Someone from our team, usually our founder Todd and his family, is sure to attend. We love the cultural events and the organization’s mission, and when it is something free to do in San Diego, how can we possibly say no!

Local Tips
Beat the Crowds at the PIF
Our team's #1 tip is to arrive by 8 AM. It's the best way to experience the festival! You'll enjoy cooler weather and smaller crowds, and you'll be sure to catch the vibrant opening procession without having to fight for a good viewing spot.

Hosted by the amazing Pacific Islander Festival Association (PIFA), the goal of this community event in San Diego is simple: to share the rich cultures, traditions, and aloha spirit of the Indigenous People of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.

It’s a must-visit event in San Diego for a little entertainment, education, and cultural enrichment.

What is the Theme for PIFA 2025?

This year’s theme is “Pasifika United We Paddle.”

Our founder, Todd, summed the theme up nicely! ‘It honors the past, celebrates the present, and paddles with purpose into the future’.

Festival Costs and Options for Where to Stay Nearby

So now that you know what the PIF is all about, where it is, and when it will be held in 2025, let’s have a look at how to get you and your family in and where you might like to stay nearby if you want to make a weekend out of it!

Ticket Information: How Much Does it Cost to Attend the Pacific Islander Festival?

When we write articles about the popular events in San Diego, we always include information about how to get tickets and what admission will cost! I love when I get to share good news!

The Pacific Islander Festival is a free event, so there’s no need to buy tickets! Just show up, but I would recommend that you bring your credit or debit card because you’ll want to check out the food vendors and there will be a small cost to try out there delicious treats!

Where to Rest Easy: Hotel Suggestions Near Ski Beach

Since the Pacific Islander Festival is a weekend long event, we stay local and spend some time relaxing. Our top hotel pick in the area is the San Diego Mission Bay Resort, with a family-friendly atmosphere and a massive swimming pool. It’s also one of the best hotels near SeaWorld San Diego, which is also in Mission Bay Park.

Pro tip: Book a private cabana and relax with drinks while watching the kids swim.

How to Step Up Your Pacific Islander Festival Weekend

To make the most of the weekend, or extend it into a long weekend, consider a Go City San Diego pass. It offers bang for your buck if you plan to visit other popular San Diego attractions, like Sea World San Diego, which is literally minutes from the festival, or one of the many nearby San Diego museums.

What are the Highlights of the Pacific Islander Festival 2025?

Dancing at the Pacific Islander Festival
Dancing at the Pacific Islander Festival

My family is ready to experience the colors and culture at the Pacific Islander Festival. Let’s have a look at the event’s schedule and a few things that I think are the real highlights you won’t want to miss!

Saturday Festival Schedule

The festival kicks off Saturday the 20th with an 8:30am procession and opening ceremony, followed by the National Anthem by MASINA and welcome remarks. I suggest that you arrive early for the best viewing spot as this can actually be quite popular. Gates open at 7:30am.

Later, it’s nonstop cultural magic as Na Pua ‘Ilima, Samoa Matalasi, and Kuhai Halau O ‘Ilima bring the stage to life with traditional, family-friendly dances and storytelling.

I can’t wait to see Kutturan Chamoru & UnoHit, the always-popular HIVA KATOA, and headliner SIAOSI at 2:00pm, with Kaliloa O Kaleo’Onalani closing out day 1 at 2:45pm.

Sunday’s Main Events

Come back Sunday, September 21st for an 8:00am Praise & Worship session by Sister Susan Gayosso & Family, then enjoy cultural gems like Imahen Taotao Tano, Motu Nehenehe, and Zaya Mauga & Friends.

Sunday wraps up with an Opportunity Drawing at 2:45pm.

Other San Diego Events This Weekend

If your family loves the PIF like my family, other events worth checking out in the area include the Petco Park events or San Diego’s summer concerts and outdoor festivals which are still going on into the fall season.

You’ll have to wait for the 2026 event, but my family also really enjoyed the Holo Holo Music Festival which took place August 30th & 31st in Gallagher Square, with a similar culture-focused vibe.

If you like music and street festivals, The Adams Avenue Street Fair 2025 is this weekend as well, September 20th and 21st, 2025 in University Heights, Normal Heights, Kensington. Perhaps you could pop over there after the PIF as events go much later with that one!

In between the main events, don’t miss the family-friendly art exhibits by 57 different vendors like Aloha Bliss and Hula Baby, and immersive zones.

The festival schedules can’t-miss timeslots include hands-on cultural workshops where parents and kids can learn dances, crafts, and more.

From someone that knows the festival quite well, I can say that there’s no shortage of experiences to soak up between 8:30am and 2:45pm Saturday and 8:00am and 2:45pm Sunday. Just bring your curiosity and your aloha spirit!

Parking, Eats, and Island Hopping at the Pacific Islander Festival

Getting Ready to Dance at the Pacific Islander Festival
Getting Ready to Dance at the Pacific Islander Festival

You might be wondering, ‘How can I get there and where can I park?’ Getting to the event in Ski Beach and knowing where to park are things you’ll want to know!

Travel and Parking

The festival is located at 1600 Vacation Road, San Diego, CA 92109 in Mission Bay, Ski Beach. From Downtown San Diego, travel north on I-5. Coming from La Jolla or UCSD? Head south on I-5 and exit at SeaWorld Drive.

There are two parking lots, and both are free. The Sun Runner lot just off the 5 freeway exit Sea World Dr. and Hospitality Point on Quivira Blvd. Shuttle buses run from both.

What Food and Beverage Options are Available?

Outside food and drinks are not allowed, but you won’t need them. There are 21 food vendors at the festival this year, all with plenty of Island flavors to go around.

I’m looking forward to traditional pupusas, and my daughter can’t wait to dig into some shaved ice at Hana Hau. Vendors accept debit and credit cards and some accept cash. There’s an ATM on-site.

Festival Like a Pro: Tips for a Smooth PIF Day

Beautiful Dancing at the Pacific Islander Festival
Beautiful Dancing at the Pacific Islander Festival

Below are some tips and things we think you should know before you attend the event.

Our Team’s #1 Tip

Our team at Go Visit San Diego has been attending the PIF for years, and our top tip is to arrive by 8:00am if you can.

It’s cooler, less crowded, and you’ll catch the vibrant opening procession.

More Festival Insider Things to Know

Dress in light layers, wear comfy shoes for walking, and don’t forget sunscreen and a hat.

I love exploring the Cultural Village between performances, and the workshops are a hidden gem, great for all ages.

If you're into photography, aim for mid-morning or late afternoon when the light is just right. Just be mindful that some performances have cultural significance. Ask before snapping pics.

Special Rules and Festival Hours

The PIF runs on Saturday from 7:30am until 4:00pm and Sunday from 8:00am until 4:00pm. From our experience, the earlier you arrive, the easier parking and seating will be.

What are our top tips to maximize the experience? Pack light. My family usually brings small backpacks and refillable water bottles.

Remember that outside food and alcohol are not allowed. Hit the food vendors; they’re a huge part of the experience (try the kalua pork. It sells fast!).

The festival is relaxed, family-friendly, and packed with things to do. I’d ultimately just say to bring your friends & family and come ready to enjoy every moment!
