Howl-O-Scream Returns to San Diego in 2025

Pirates at Howl O Scream Seaworld San DiegoLady Clown with Knife at Howl O Scream Seaworld San Diego

Thrills, chills, and a lot of Halloween fun awaits as Howl-O-Scream returns to SeaWorld San Diego in 2025 for its fifth anniversary of frightful nights!

If you’ve got teenage kids like me, then this could be an awesome night of fun and memories, with a side of screams and excitement. Howl-O-Scream has quickly become one of my family’s favorite Halloween events, and we can’t wait to go this year!

What began back in 1999 at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay has since expanded to many SeaWorld parks, including the San Diego location in Mission Bay Park. The 2025 event promises tons of thrills with scare zones, live music, haunted attractions, and roaming actors who could be lurking behind the next corner. Watch out!

What is Howl-O-Scream at SeaWorld San Diego?

Howl-O-Scream is SeaWorld’s annual Halloween special engagement that takes place on select nights in September and October. During the event, sections of the SeaWorld San Diego park are restyled in different Halloween themes, from a nightmare experiment to a Mardi Gras night turned wrong.

As guests travel the park, they may encounter surprise scare actors in between watching frightening shows and visiting haunted houses.

SeaWorld San Diego advertises that Howl-O-Scream is an event intended for older teens and adults due to its more mature content. While I’m planning to attend in a few weeks with my teenage kids and wife, and am really excited, the themes are those of horror movies and nightmares. So, be advised that it’s really not an event for younger kids.

When is Howl-O-Scream 2025 SeaWorld San Diego?

Howl-O-Scream at SeaWorld San Diego takes place on Friday and Saturday nights in September and Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights now through November 1st.

Gates open at 6:00pm with the events starting at 7:00pm.

What are Some Howl-O-Scream Alternatives?

I’ve been to Howl-O-Scream a few times and can say that the themes and scares are a lot for me. So the idea of bringing kids under about 13 years old wouldn’t be my personal recommendation for you.

However, San Diego has quite a few family-friendly fall and Halloween events and activities from special events at our theme parks to pumpkin patches spread throughout the city that are fantastic for kids of all ages.

Some popular family-friendly Halloween or fall events among our Go Visit San Diego team include HalGLOWeen at the San Diego Zoo, Brick-or-Treat Monster Party at LEGOLAND California, and holiday events like the Día de Muertos celebrations in Old Town San Diego.

SeaWorld San Diego’s All Age Halloween Spooktacular

SeaWorld San Diego has their very own family-friendly Halloween event called the SeaWorld Spooktacular that runs on Saturdays and Sundays, plus Halloween Friday from September 6th until November 2nd, 2025.

The daytime event includes a Spookley dance party, trick-or-treating, talking skeletons telling jokes, a waterfront pumpkin patch, Spooktacular pumpkin hunt, and more!

2025 Ticket Information

Though Howl-O-Scream is held inside the SeaWorld San Diego park, it is not included in park admission and is a separately ticketed event.

However, there are plenty of reasons that justify the price of admission, from themed cocktail bars to haunted house experiences with live scare actors. If you like a little guts and gore, maybe a good horror movie or two, then I know that you won’t be disappointed!

Howl-O-Scream Ticket Options

Since Howl-O-Scream tickets are separate from park entry, daytime tickets won’t grant entry to the event. Annual pass holders do not receive free entry, but they can get a $5 discount on single-night and unlimited tickets.

Prices for date-specific tickets vary, and early ticket purchasers can get major discounts during the slash sale.

Pricing for the 2025 event is as follows:

  • Single-Night Ticket, Specific Date: starting at $44.99 (slash sale) or $94.99 (regular)
  • Single-Night Ticket, Flexible Date: $66.99 (slash sale) or $94.99 (regular)
  • Unlimited Admission Ticket: $111.99 (slash sale) or $117.99 (regular)

Terrifying Haunted Houses, Scare Zones, & More

SeaWorld San Diego is part amusement park and part marine zoo. In the daytime, marine life takes center stage just like at another of my favorite San Diego attractions, the Birch Aquarium at Scripps in La Jolla.

At night, you’ll find Halloween surprises throughout the park, including a number of scary attractions.

Haunted Houses

Howl-O-Scream 2025 features five different haunted houses, each with a different flavor of frights.

  • Nightmare Experiment Sweet DreamzZz: Once a wellness center, now a testing ground for a sleep agent with some awful side effects, you’ll be the test case for this one!
  • Circus of the Damned 3D: Don your 3D glasses and escape from the ringmaster and his crew in this circus of horrors. If your nightmares include clowns, watch out for this haunted house.
  • Simon’s Slaughterhouse: You’ll have to evade the butcher as you navigate new sensory effects that will have you terrified around every corner. I personally think this haunted house is the best!
  • Deathwater Bayou Awakening: This swamp-themed haunted house features a witch that follows you through a graveyard. I think I laughed, screamed, and maybe cried just a little at this one!
  • Area 64: Alien Outbreak: The aliens aren’t the only threat in this sci-fi adventure. You’ll have to dodge the lethal security, crazy scientist, and the aliens themselves in this one.

Watch Out for the Scare Zones!

Scare Zones are dedicated areas decorated to match a specific theme. Be on your guard as you pass through these zones, as someone just might jump out at you!

New for 2025, SeaWorld San Diego has added a BRAND NEW scare zone.

  • Overgrowth: Beware of a disturbed botanist who has unleashed scary plants as they navigate the deep woods.

You can also enjoy your favorite acre zones from previous years.

  • Terrors of the Deep: This zone takes inspiration from Lovecraft’s stories of eldritch horror in seaside fishing towns - find it near the Tentacle Twirl ride.
  • Ripper Row: Near the arcade, you’ll be thrust back to the time of Jack the Ripper’s bloody reign in London.
  • Red Moon Revelry: A vampire-themed bloodbath outside the usual Penguin Encounter area
  • All Hallow's Harvest: Found by Emperor coaster, cursed scarecrows have taken over a dying farm.
  • Carnival of Chaos: Carnies, clowns, and sideshow stars prowl this area at the entrance to the park.
  • Deadly Toys: Childhood toys are just dying to play with you south of the Nautilus Pavilion.
  • Graveyard: The restless dead rise from their graves in front of the Nautilus Amphitheater.

Terrifying Tales at Vile Vignettes

In addition to rides, roaming actors, and haunted houses, SeaWorld San Diego’s Vile Vignettes are staged scenes with live entertainment. Each of these six scenes tells a unique tale that will scare you just the same!

This year’s returning shows are:

  • Misfortune: A fortune teller shares her not-so-lucky predictions.
  • Dark Magic: A twisted magician performs sadistic feats with sleight of hand.

There are also two NEW vignettes making their debut in 2025:

  • Dolly Delightful: Sure, Dolly looks innocent on the outside, but don’t get too close to her “Try Me” button, or you’ll regret it!
  • Summon the Spirits: A paranormal researcher looks to contact a victim of Jack the Ripper, but learns it may not be the best idea.

Unique Experiences - Beyond the Scares

Howl-O-Scream 2025 also offers guests exciting ceremonies, energetic shows, rides in the dark, and themed eateries.

Live Entertainment

Each evening of the event kicks off with the Opening SCAREmony. The ghoulish MC invites guests into the park to experience all the surprises in store while setting the scene for what you can expect to encounter.

I’d also recommend you make a little time for the Monster Stomp performance. This rock and rhythm show made its debut in 2024 and was such a hit that they brought it back.

The live stage show at the Nautilus Amphitheater features Jack the Ripper as well as singing, dancing, and some pretty awesome choreography my daughter really enjoys!

There is reserved seating for the show if you want to ensure great seats. Prices start at just $9.99.

Thrilling Rides in the Dark!

While not all of the rides are open, you can still get your dose of nighttime terror by riding your favorites in the dark. Be sure to check out Arctic Rescue, Electric Eel, Emperor, and more!

Sinister Cocktails and Themed Bars

Stationed throughout the park are Halloween-themed bars, each with its own selection of cocktails. New for 2025, you’ll find Fanta Fright House, Coffin 1380, and the Inferno Bar, each with its own concoctions.

You can still visit last year’s favorites too including LaBARatory, Big Top Drinks, and Toybox.

Howl-O-Sprint 5K Run

SeaWorld San Diego will be holding its 2nd Annual Howl-O-Sprint 5K Run this fall, featuring a 3.1-mile route through the property. Though not directly part of the Howl-O-Scream nightly event, there will be some spooky surprises along the path, and runners can come in costume (no masks)!

The 5K Run is on Sunday, October 19, 2025, at 7:00am, with a Kids 1-Mile Fun Run following at 8:30 am. All kids receive an official race shirt, a race bib with a timing chip, a one-of-a-kind finisher medal, and eligibility for awards. The parking lot will open at 5:30am for the event.

The 5k is currently $65.80 (increasing after October 13th) and the Kids 1K Fun Run is $27.75 (increasing after September 30th).

Register here for the race!

Getting To Howl-O-Scream & Staying Near the Park

With SeaWorld San Diego located in Mission Bay Park, you can choose to drive and park or take advantage of San Diego’s public transportation.

Driving & Parking

Interstate 5 is the main highway near SeaWorld San Diego. There is a SeaWorld exit right off the highway. Take the West Mission Bay Drive exit from I-5, and just follow the signs to SeaWorld.

Parking is not included with the price of admission for Howl-O-Scream. General parking is $25, U-Close parking is $28, and VIP parking starts at $35. RV and camper parking is $30.

Public Transportation Options

If you don’t want to drive, take the San Diego Trolley to the Old Town Transit Center and then grab the local bus which will take you to the park in just over 20 minutes.

The Metropolitan Transit System offers daily bus service to SeaWorld San Diego from the Old Town Transit Center, via routes 8 and 9. The Old Town Transit Center also offers connections to Amtrak, the Coaster, and other bus services, so if you can get to that station, they can get you to Howl-O-Scream!

Stay Nearby at a Not-So-Scary Hotel

Once you’re all screamed out, a relaxing hotel stay at The Dana on Mission Bay is the perfect way to wind down.

The Dana is a 3-star property on the waterfront with two pools and comfortable rooms. It’s located about a mile from SeaWorld San Diego and comes highly recommended by our team.

FAQs & Things to Know

Everyone wants to be safe and have a lot of fun and one of the best ways to do this is to know the rules before you arrive.

Can I Wear a Costume?

Face paint and costumes are not allowed in the park during Howl-O-Scream. This is for the safety of the guests and staff so everyone knows who is an employee and who is an attendee.

What’s the Bag Policy?

Bags larger than 8”x5” may not be carried into the park. I’ve seen the park staff be pretty strict about this, especially at events like Howl-O-Scream so your best bet is to carry a very small bag with only the essentials you’ll need during your visit.

Is Howl-O-Scream Suitable for Kids?

Howl-O-Scream is not recommended for ages 12 and under due to mature themes, though there is no official age restriction, so I suggest that you use your discretion. During the day, kids will enjoy SeaWorld Spooktacular, SeaWorld’s all age Halloween seasonal event.

Remember, other San Diego Halloween events like HalGLOween at the San Diego Zoo and Brick-or-Treat Monster Party at LEGOLAND California are all age events as well!

What are Some Other Things I Should Know About Howl-O-Scream?

  • When the park closes later than 5:00pm, guests already inside SeaWorld with evening Howl-O-Scream tickets will need to exit the park and enter through the security screening check that leads into the designated Howl-O-Scream park entrance which is found to the right of the main entrance.
  • There is no flash photography allowed inside the haunted houses.
  • SeaWorld San Diego is a cashless venue so bring a credit or debit card.
  • Fall nights can get chilly in San Diego, so I suggest that you bring a light jacket or sweatshirt.

Don’t forget to have fun and enjoy all that one of San Diego’s favorite Halloween events has to offer!
