Get ready for the world’s most iconic celebration of comics, movies, TV shows, video games, and pop culture as 2025 San Diego Comic-Con takes over the San Diego Convention Center.

Comic-Con has grown from humble beginnings in 1972, for a very niche audience, to today welcoming over 135,000 enthusiasts annually. This event brings together fans, creators, and celebrities from around the world for a unique 4-day gathering that has become a San Diego tradition!

From DC Comics and Marvel Studio to Amblin Entertainment and more, all the most popular and famous studios will be represented at the event. The Comic-Con Convention is a family-friendly favorite among our Go Visit San Diego team and you’re about to see why!

When and Where is 2025 San Diego Comic-Con?

2025 San Diego Comic-Con is scheduled for July 24th to July 27th, 2025, at the San Diego Convention Center in the Embarcadero neighborhood along the San Diego Bay.

All four days are full of panels and guest appearances by famous names in pop culture. There will also be a wealth of vendors to check out in and around the convention hall plus cosplay, pop-up sets, kid zones and more, much of which can be accessed ‘with or without’ an attendee badge!

Will George Lucas be at San Diego Comic Con 2025?

You may have heard the rumors that George Lucas, creator of Stars and Indiana Jones, will be attending San Diego Comic Con 2025. We’ve heard this could be in the works for a few weeks and if true, it would mark his first ever Comic Con San Diego appearance.

We now can confirm that it is true, George Lucas will be in attendance on Sunday July 27th from 11:00am until 12:00pm at San Diego Comic Con. He is scheduled to sit on a panel with Mexican director and producer Guillermo Del Toro who directed Pan’s Labyrinth and who won the 2022 Oscar for best animated feature for his stop-motion musical adaptation of Pinocchio.

Musician and actor Queen Latifah will moderate the discussion set to discuss illustrated storytelling. It will also feature a sneak peek of the Lucas Museum of Narrative ART in Los Angeles. The new museum looks a bit like a Star Wars Millennium Falcon to me, or at least a futuristic space craft, and is scheduled to open in 2026.

While there is no meet-and-greet for fans, there is speculation that he may share BIG news, perhaps about a new movie such as a Midi-chlorian film or something similar. No matter what happens, George Lucas will be in attendance and our Go Visit San Diego Team is really excited!

You don’t want to miss the legendary Exhibit Hall with fan and merch tables that will make your head spin! Expect to see Marvel Studios, LEGO, Nickelodeon, and many more exhibitors!

Don’t forget about Artist Alley with dozens of popular art pieces. The Masquerade on-stage costume competition is also not to be missed.

What Exclusive Merchandise is Available at 2025 San Diego Comic-Con?

2025 San Diego Comic-Con is a collector’s paradise with many exclusive items. Our team at Go Visit San Diego has heard that there will be some special Funko Pop! figures from different franchises. There may even be a Batman 2010 Blueprint edition.

I would also advise keeping an eye on Hasbro and Mattel Creations for some exclusive items from popular lines like Star Wars and Marvel.

Can I Attend Comic-Con Without a Ticket?

The short answer is ‘no’, you will need an official badge to get to the Convention Center stairs and inside the Convention Center. Without a ticket you won’t be able to get inside in 2025.

However, I can tell you that 2025 San Diego Comic-Con is a fantastic event to go to even if you don’t have access to the events inside the Convention Center. There is a lot to see and do outside! Pop-up sets you can walk through, buildings wrapped with some of the biggest banner advertisements I’ve ever seen, and vendors selling goods of all types are just some of the highlights.

The people-watching is pretty spectacular as well as fans come dressed as their favorite characters. Keep your eyes open for everyone from the Fantastic Four and an array of anime favorites to Batman, Spiderman and so many more! This is an event, even from outside the Convention Center, that you won’t want to miss!

Is San Diego Comic-Con 2025 Sold Out?

Unfortunately, all the attendee badges are sold out for the 2025 event.

But there are still many ways to be part of the action even without an attendee badge such as being part of the cosplay outside, the kid zones, or checking out one of the pop-up sets in the area.

Is it Hard to Get Tickets to Comic-Con?

Our founder Todd got tickets for his family a last year. With that ‘win’ our team knows that while it is not impossible, getting tickets to Comic-Con San Diego is tough!

The good news is that you can get your badges for next year soon! Badges for 2026 will go on sale this fall. Don’t miss out!

How Do I Get an Attendee Badge for the 2026 San Diego Comic-Con?

I will say right up front that badges are hard to get no matter how you go about it, but with a little preparation, it is possible to secure tickets for you and your family.

You’ll need to first sign-up for a Comic-Con Member ID. Then badges are historically sold about seven to nine months in advance at one of two sales events - Returning Registration and Open Registration.

Returning attendee badges were sold last year on Saturday, September 21st, 2024. First-time attendee badges were sold on Saturday, November 23rd, 2024. We’re guessing the sales dates for the 2026 Comic-Con will go on sale about the same time in 2025.

The process is all digital and includes joining a virtual waiting room, waiting (and hoping) your number gets called, and then buying your tickets. You can find more details about the process on Comic-Con’s official site. As they say and we agree, it’s never too early to sign-up for a Comic-Con Member ID and join their mailing list so you can be kept up to date with the latest on the 2026 attendee badge sales.

The Legendary Exhibit Hall

If you’re lucky enough to have landed an attendee badge for the 2025 San Diego Comic-Con, the Legendary Exhibit Hall is not to be missed. With more than 460,000 square feet of comics, collectibles, and more, this is something that the Go Visit San Diego team highly recommends!

From the most established names in comic books and popular arts to the future's rising stars, they're all here!

  • Explore Artists Alley for mind-blowing graphics.
  • Browse and immerse yourself in the world of your favorite films or comic books.
  • Buy the rare books and comics you won't find easily elsewhere!

You'll come across the jaw-dropping, the weird, and the wonderful. The best thing is that you'll be surrounded by people who share the same passion as you. Despite the crowds, you'll feel at home.

If you’re an aspiring artist or writer, you’ll want to take advantage of portfolio reviews at 2025 San Diego Comic-Con. This is a fun and exciting process that’s posted at 9:00am daily where you can see the company of the day and requirements to review.

Masquerade Competition

The Masquerade Competition has been a Comic-Con staple since 1974. This year’s event is on Saturday, July 26th, 2025, at 8:30pm. You’ll get to see what’s similar to a ‘talent show’ featuring an array of costumed, non-professional fans. I call it a mind-blowing experience highlighting some really dedicated and impressive individuals.

The event takes place in Ballroom 20. Free tickets to secure a seat will be given out at noon on Saturday at the Ballroom entrance and then again from 3:00pm until 5:00pm at the Masquerade Desk.

There will be awards and trophies for the winners. I highly suggest that you make time for this event.

The Comic-Con Museum Character Hall of Fame (MCHOF)

In 2019, Batman, DC's iconic superhero, became the first to be initiated into the Comic-Con Museum Character Hall of Fame. Open all year round, the Museum honors the iconic characters who have made such an impact on popular culture over time.

Hall of Fame inductees have included PAC-MAN, Wonder Woman, and Spider-Man.

In 2025, a new member will be joining the ranks who has yet to be announced. You won’t want to miss their induction ceremony, which will take place during Comic-Con!

Activities & Entertainment for All Ages

Comic-Con 2025 is a family-friendly event! If you have tickets for your family, that is fantastic, but even if you don’t, bring the kids along!

Cosplay Fun for All Ages

Cosplay, or amateurs dressing up as their favorite character in often incredibly impressive costumes, is a yearly highlight for Todd and his family.

Fans aim to portray a character in every detail. Comic-Con is a magnet for experienced cosplayers and novices alike. No matter how young your kids are, they'll love seeing life-sized comic characters around the exhibition hall.

What are the Top Cosplay Trends for 2025?

Horizon Zero Dawn and Legend of Zelda remain popular, with characters like Aloy and Link at the top of the list. Comic book characters like Spider-Man, Batman, and the Joker, are also popular.

Not everyone dresses up at Comic-Con, but imagine how much fun kids have if they also attend as their favorite superhero or wizard. No costume is too out of this world when you attend Comic-Con.

Explore the Pop-up Sets

One of my personal favorite parts of the Comic-Con weekend are the pop-up sets.

If you’ve never been to Comic-Con, your next question might be, ‘What are pop-up sets?’ Pop-up sets are interactive walkthroughs of TV show sets that are built just for the Comic-Con event.

The highlight of last year’s Comic-Con pop-up sets was surely FX’s ‘The Bear’ restaurant which looked just like the show. I must admit that the line to get a picture was long, but you didn’t need a ticket to get inside and best of all, it was free!

I’m excited to see what pop-up sets will be part of the 2025 festivities and if I can find out before the event, I’ll be sure to post the latest here!

Films and Games

Two of my favorite things to do with my kids are watching movies and playing games!

Check the events schedule or MySchedule (powered by SCHED) as the event approaches for a list of literally 100’s of games and dozens of films scheduled for the weekend.

I found that many of the games and films in past years weren’t at the Convention Center, rather at surrounding hotels and businesses, meaning even without a badge, you could watch or play!

WonderCon Children's Film Festival

Great for all ages, the WonderCon International Children's Film Festival is set for 2025. The most creative and exciting short films worldwide are shown in animations, live-action, and documentaries.

There'll be something for every interest. Film directors and creatives also give talks on how to make, write, and direct. They even offer tips on how to get started and make a career in film!

Check back for the complete schedule as the event gets a little closer or ask what will be showing upon arrival.

The 24th Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival 2025, or CCI_IFF, will be held at the Marriott Marquis and Marina Hotel in Marriott Grand Ballroom 6, which is next to the Hall A side of the Convention Center.

The 2025 lineup is a really good one featuring 53 films from seven different genres created by filmmakers from around the world! The film categories are listed below.

  • Action/Adventure
  • Animation
  • Comics-Oriented
  • Documentary (Popular Arts-Oriented)
  • Horror/Suspense
  • Science Fiction/Fantasy

There will be panel discussions Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and awards handed out on Sunday. What Else Can I Expect at San Diego Comic-Con 2025?

We’ve covered the highlights of things to do and see inside and outside the Comic-Con conventions but you just never know exactly what you’ll get until you show up!

Past years have included unveilings and new trailers for highly-anticipated releases like Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Tales of the Walking Dead, video game reveals, exciting announcements, and even new comic books.

While we’re not sure exactly what’s in store for this year, there are sure to be plenty of fun surprises and lots of exciting news!

Bonus Idea: Visit The Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park

So you've decided to come to join in on the fun in San Diego, but what else do you have planned? What about a tour of Downtown San Diego? Or how about a visit to the Comic-Con Museum, a year-round museum in Balboa Park.

The museum featured interactive exhibits that are updated regularly as well as movie screenings, panels, and so many other activities. It’s a great way to learn more about your favorite comic creation any time of the year!

Directions & Parking Information

There are a number of ways to get to the Convention Center including taking the Trolley (by far my #1 recommendation), COASTER commuter train, a bike or scooter, or finally catching a San Diego rideshare such as Uber or Lyft or driving by yourself.

Let’s take a deeper look at your options!

Trolley Crossing the Street in the Gaslamp Next to Comic-Con San Diego 2022
Trolley Crossing the Street in the Gaslamp Next to Comic-Con San Diego 2022

Take the MTS Trolley Service

I don’t want to overstate how strongly I feel about taking the Trolley to the Convention Center as my preferred method, but this is by far the best way to get in and out of the action!

Look out for the Special Event Line train from places like Pacific Beach and La Jolla which will run more direct and cut down on the need to transfer. The special line will run every 15 minutes from Thursday until Sunday from UC San Diego Blue Line stations between Balboa Avenue and Santa Fe Depot. It will then continue along the Green Line path between Santa Fe Depot and 12th & Imperial.

I recommend that you get on or off the train at the Convention Center or Gaslamp Quarter stations and walk from there. These two stops are across from Hall A (Convention Center Station at Harbor Drive and First Ave.) and near Hall D (Gaslamp Station at Harbor Drive and Fifth Ave.).

As a local tip, if those stations are too busy for your liking, you could also walk up to the 12th and Imperial station and get on from there!

How Much are Comic-Con Day Trolley Tickets & How Do I Get Them?

The best way to ride is with a PRONTO pass which you can get through the app or at the station for a $2 fee. Comic-Con day pass prices are listed below.

  • 2-Day Pass – $10
  • 3-Day Pass – $13
  • 4-Day Pass – $16
  • 5-Day Pass – $20

Take the COASTER

If you’re headed in from a bit further away, say the Oceanside neighborhood in North County, taking the COASTER commuter train is the way to get to Comic-Con.

The train makes eight stops before stopping at Santa Fe Depot in Downtown San Diego. From there it’s easy to take the Trolley or if you’re feeling good, the walk is just under a mile and should take you a bit less than 30 minutes!

Can I Drive to Comic-Con

While you can drive to Comic-Con and try to find parking at one of the many parking lots in the area, finding open space will be tough and it will likely be expensive.

I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re staying at one of the area hotels. But if you must, let’s have a look at the directions below.

Driving Directions to the San Diego Convention Center

Whichever way you're coming from, you will want to hop onto I-5 north or south. Take the 17th Street exit off of the freeway into Downtown San Diego.

If you're traveling on I-5 south:

After taking the 17th Street exit, you will need to turn right onto Imperial Avenue. Take another right onto 12th Avenue from where you will take a left onto J Street.

If you are traveling on I-5 north:

After taking the 17th Street exit, you will take an immediate left onto J Street.

From J Street, you will take a left onto Fourth Avenue. You will come to a 'T' where you will need to turn left. After that, take a right onto Fifth Avenue to see the Convention Center straight ahead!

Will Harbor Drive Be Closed During Comic-Con?

Harbor Drive between First Avenue and Park Boulevard will be completely closed to all forms of vehicular traffic including bikes and scooters during Comic-Con so that everyone can have a safe and secure experience. ADA mobility devices will be allowed.

Closure times as just announced by the Port of San Diego and the City of San Diego are listed below.

  • Wednesday, July 23rd – 2:00pm – 10:00pm
  • Thursday, July 24th – 7:00am – 10:00pm
  • Friday, July 25th – 7:00am – 10:00pm
  • Saturday, July 26th – 7:00am – 10:00pm
  • Sunday, July 27th – 7:00am – 8:00pm

If you have a valid parking pass for the Ace Parking garage under the Convention Center, you will be allowed to drive through.

Parking Information

Comic-Con has a parking lottery system that gives you access to numerous parking lots that are within walking distance of the convention center. If you didn’t get in on the lottery that ended on May 27th, there may still be permits left now that the parking has opened to the general public.

ADA spaces are first-come, first-served. The Convention Center and Hilton Bay Front are the best choices for ADA parking.

Additional Parking Options

We compiled a few of our favorite parking lots in terms of distance to the Convention Center and price. We can’t confirm that there will be spaces available on event days and prices may vary as well.

  • 289 6th Ave. - 6th and K Parkade: Event prices. 6-minute walk
  • 614 Market St. - Park it on Market: Event prices. 12-minute walk
  • 501 West Broadway: $35 Weekdays, $10 Weekends. 18-minute walk
  • 1098 Columbia St.: $15-24, 20-minute walk

Hard Rock Hotel San Diego

I mentioned the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego earlier in the article and that’s because it’s one of my personal favorite hotels in the area.

Music lovers can have almost as much fun at the hotel as they can have at Comic-Con when they stay at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego, which features an eclectic design that celebrates the golden days of music.

This classic hotel is central to many of Downtown’s best attractions and just across the street from the Convention Center. You can look out over the city from your private terrace while enjoying a drink from the minibar.

Convention Center Do’s and Dont’s

Below are some Comic-Con policies that you’ll want to be aware of before you arrive.

Have your badge on you at all times.

Your badge will have an RFID sticker attached with your day or 4-day paper name badge. When you go into various parts of the Convention Center, Hall H, and the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel, you’ll see signs gates to “SCAN HERE”. You’ll need to tap your badge. Once you get the green light, you’re in! When you leave you have to tap your badge out so you can re-enter when you return. You could be denied re-entry if you don’t!

Get there early to avoid lines because it gets packed in there!

Wear comfy shoes because you will do a ton of walking.

No handcarts, trolleys, rolling luggage, or oversized strollers are allowed in the Exhibit Hall.

No live-streaming or recording of any event is allowed.

Only service animals are allowed, all other pets have to stay home.

No alcoholic beverages are allowed in the Convention Center.

Following these tips will make for a better experience at 2025 San Diego Comic-Con!

Be Yourself and Be Respectful

Don't be afraid to be yourself! At the San Diego Comic Convention, all personalities will be welcomed with open arms! Remember to wait in line and be kind to one another.

Soak in the unique atmosphere, as the good-humored crowd enjoys over 700+ comic-themed exhibitions and events. The peculiar and extraordinary are more than welcome - and they'll be out in force!

Also, remember that celebrities are people too! If you see them eating with their families, wait for a better time to go up and chat with them. Unless, of course, they invite you to eat with them.

Have a Blast!

Comic-Con is all about fun! Dress up as your favorite superhero or character! Take lots of pictures and make some friends. This event only happens once a year, so embrace the moment.
