Lights, Camera, Action: Summer Movies in the Park

While some of our team at Go Visit San Diego prefer the fall, for me, summertime is my favorite time to be in San Diego! My kids are out of school and it seems like San Diego County has some sort of event going on almost every day.

From taking advantage of the summer concerts and outdoor music festivals in San Diego to visiting the best tourist attractions, I never hear “I’m bored” from my kids!

One of my favorite activities is the Summer Movies in the Park series. Not only do I get to see a list of incredible movies with my family for FREE, but I also get to visit several great neighborhoods and parks at the same time!

Movies are scheduled starting at the end of May and run through November, so you can even enjoy movies well into the fall in San Diego.

History of San Diego’s Summer Movies in the Park

The Summer Movies in the Park series is the largest free and family-friendly outdoor movie series in San Diego County.

It started in 2007 as a “take back our parks” initiative to run together with the county’s Live Well vision. Nearly 20 years later, it’s thriving and continues to attract hundreds of families each year!

Why I Love Summer Movies in the Park

I love spending time with my family, and catching a movie for free is a homerun for me!

One of the best things about this event too is that there are so many different venues showing movies throughout the season. From visiting Waterfront Park in Downtown San Diego to the Morley Field Sports Complex in North Park, taking advantage of the Summer Movies in the Park can really help you see much of the San Diego area.

More Than Just Movies

While we all go to see the movies, there’s much more to enjoy!

I’ve found that pre-movie activities, like bounce houses, family-friendly games, dancing, arts and crafts, and snacks kick off before dark with the movies all starting about 15 minutes after sunset.

Some parks and venues will also have concessions and food trucks. Be sure to check ahead so you don’t miss out on the fun! Do note though that this really varies park to park as some won’t have any pre-show activities or food available.

Where to Catch Summer Movies in the Park

The 2025 Summer Movies in the Park series features well over 100 movies in more than 50 parks and venues spread all over San Diego.

We don’t want you to miss your favorite movie whether than be ‘Despicable Me 4’ at Poway Community Park in June, ‘The Lion King’ from 1994 in Pacific Beach at the Pacific Beach / Taylor Library in early August, or Coco in Old Town San Diego State Park on Día de los Muertos!

We decided to sort the list by ‘neighborhood and park’ so you can see what’s playing, and in which park near you!

What You Need to Know Before You Head to a Movie

Before heading out to the Summer Movies in the Park with your family, there are a few more things you’ll want to know so that you have the best time!

How Much is Admission?

At Go Visit San Diego we’re always looking for budget-friendly things to do. When we find free things to do that are fun for the whole family, that’s when we get really excited to share.

And that is what is so awesome about the summer movies in the park! You and your family can see all the movies in the entire series for FREE! With everything so expensive these days, this is a real treat.

Do note though that some locations may charge a small parking fee.

Is There Parking Available?

Many of the venues have large parking areas and are also close to public transportation. Some of the parks are small and therefore will have limited parking or street parking.

Your best bets is to check ahead of your visit directly with the park or venue to see if parking is available.

Is There Food For Purchase?

Some venues will have popcorn, concessions, and food trucks, while others will not. The official summer movies in the park site lists out the movies in their ‘Upcoming Movies’ section where they provide details about each parks food and concessions.

You can also always pack a picnic or some popcorn and movie candy, and eat under the stars!

What Should I Bring?

There are no chairs provided at any of the events, so I suggest you bring your own folding chairs or blankets.

It may also be a good idea to bring a light jacket or sweater as the San Diego nights, especially in parks closer to the mountains, can get a touch chilly for me.

Can I Bring My Dog?

If you love to bring your entire family, including your dog, to family events, you just might be in luck.

Some, but not all, parks allow dogs! I would say that many have a pet policy that allows for dogs on a leash which makes sense as most of the parks have outdoor screens.

You best bet is to check with park in advance or the ‘upcoming events’ section of the official site. There they will include the parks pet policy for the movie.
