Your Guide to The Old Globe 2025 Season of Performances

California Tower As Seen from the Old GlobeSeating at the Outdoor Lowell Davies Festival Theatre at the Old Globe

The Old Globe Theater’s 2025 season of events is getting into full swing with 11 exciting plays set for now until the end of October.

I hate to pick a favorite theater as the Rady Shell, Balboa Theater and San Diego Civic Theatre all offer great experiences as well, but I must be honest and say that for me and my wife, the stages at the Old Globe are our favorite to watch a performance in San Diego!

Recently we’ve seen Henry the IV part 1 and part 2; The Grinch and Scrooge, all of which were amazing!

If you like the Old Globe’s season of events, I would also suggest you check out the La Jolla Playhouse season calendar as it is also filled with intriguing shows throughout 2025 and into the beginning of 2026!

What is the Experience of Seeing a Play at the Old Globe Theatre Like?

Built in 1935 and modeled after the Globe Theatre in London, England, where many of William Shakespeare’s plays were performed during his lifetime, The Old Globe features both classic and contemporary works on its three Balboa Park stages.

  • The Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Balboa Theater - seats 580
  • The Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre in the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center - seats 250
  • Lowell Davies Festival Theatre - seats 620

I personally love how intimate all the theaters feel. I especially enjoy the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre used for the summer Shakespeare Festival as it’s an outdoor theater with the stage in the warm San Diego weather!

Sitting a maximum of just over 600 guests, seeing a show at the Old Globe is an experience I couldn’t recommend more!

Old Globe Awards & Nominations

The Old Globe produces about 15 plays and nearly 600 performances annually. Many of its shows have gone on to Broadway, winning nine Tony Awards and nearly 60 nominations.

An Exciting Season of Events

The Old Globe is a truly historic theater that is special to San Diego. While I’d love to tell you more about the theater itself, I don’t want to delay getting into the season calendar in this article as that’s what we’re focused on here!

For a deeper dive into the storied history of the theater, check out our full article on the Old Globe.

In 2024 I was most excited about Dracula and Fat Ham but for the 2025 season, I’m really looking forward to the comedies Regency Girls and Noises Off, plus the drama Janeiad.

Be sure to stick around until the end of the article where we’ll cover tickets, my recommendation on where to stay, directions and parking, plus a few bonus tips you won’t want to miss!

Are There Any Family-Friendly Shows at the Old Globe?

Shows at the Old Globe change by season and genres vary. While dramas are fun for me and my wife, I personally think the light-hearted comedies would be best for kids.

The good news for 2025 is that ‘yes’, there are several family-friendly shows at the Old Globe this season.

For instance, I think Noises Off and Huzzah could be fun for your family. Kids passionate about writing may also enjoy Thinking Shakespeare live.

What Plays are Showing at the Old Globe Theatre?

The Old Globe Theatre always offers a wide range of plays that change every year. 2025 is set to offer quite an interesting variety including dramas, comedies and Shakespeare!

Comedy lovers will enjoy Regency Girls or the House of India, or if you’re looking for something dramatic, perhaps the Janeiad is more your speed.

Without further ado, let’s have a look at the performance by performance dates and showtimes for the 2025 season at The Old Globe Theater.

Regency Girls

What better way to kick off our 2025 Old Globe 2025 season calendar than with a show featuring an award nominated or winning creator, writer, and composer!

The daring new musical by two-time Tony and Grammy nominee Amanda Green, with three-time Emmy-nominated composer Curtis Moore, and Emmy-winning writers Jennifer Crittenden and Gabrielle Allan, should be a profoundly epic story.

What does Elinor Benton choose to do when she finds herself unmarried, pregnant, and living in the 19th century? She gathers a group of her best friends and embarks on a journey to find the one woman who can help her.

The journey is an exciting adventure that’s equal parts love, rebellion, independence, and finding one’s self!

House of India

I’m personally a big fan of complex comedies that make you think and laugh at the same time. That’s what I’m expecting the House of India to be!

The House of India restaurant is struggling. Will owner Ananya listen to her grown children and cook’s ideas of modernizing to bring in more customers, or will she stay true to her late husband’s traditional vision?

The ‘choice’ is described as sticking with traditional dishes or going fusion-forward like an Indian Chipotle, which sounds totally hilarious to me!

One of the Good Ones

Netflix’s Emmy Award–winning acclaimed writer Gloria Calderón Kellett is bringing her heartwarming comedy to the Old Globe this summer for its San Diego premiere. I think it should marry heavy real world topics with a dose of humor.

In this comedic story, Yoli brings her boyfriend home to meet her Latino-American parents, and they are in for a shock. Despite trying to avoid drama, cultural and generational differences arise as everyone discovers what it takes to be a family.

The Janeiad

Anna Ziegler is returning in 2025 with a new story, following the success of The Wanderers and The Last Match. If you like deep thinking plays that are poetic, this could be the one for you!

The play compares one Brooklyn woman’s (Jane’s) 20 year wait for her husband to return from work one fateful September day to Penelope’s 20 year wait for Odysseus’s return from the war in the Odyssey, telling a tale fraught with hope, longing, and the little lies that help these women find peace.

All’s Well That Ends Well

Part of the annual Summer Shakespeare Festival, I always look to attend at least one Shakespeare play each year with my wife.

You’ll notice that this play is performed on the Old Globe’s outdoor stage, with all shows starting in the evening, making seeing this romantic comedy the perfect date night activity in San Diego. The weather in the summer should be fantastic and enjoying this one under the stars will be a real treat!

The Shakespeare comedy recounts that tale of Helena, a woman in love with the well-to-do Bertram. Bertram is more interested in the war than her affections, but that does little to deter this persistent woman.

Noises Off

I think kids can be really funny. I know that my kids have become hilarious as they’ve grown up. So when I first looked through the 2025 season calendar, this was a show I circled as family-friendly and one to attend with my wife and kids!

Hilarity ensues as we follow a theater company struggling to pull off its latest production in the face of misplaced props, forgotten cues and off-stage dramas that find their way on stage.

The Comedy of Errors

If you like feel-good funny plays that are full of laughs, then I think the return of James Vásquez to the Summer Shakespeare Festival after he was last seen directing 2023’s comic home run The Merry Wives of Windsor, could be a great play choice for you and your family.

This Shakespeare favorite tells the tale of a man and his sidekick whose lives are shaken when they arrive in a new town and are mistakenly confused for their long-lost twins. That’s when all types of shenanigans begin!

Deceived

The West Coast premiere of Deceived is set for August and I’m looking forward to this one!

A psychological thriller based on the classic play Gaslight, if it’s like 2022’s smash hit Dial M for Murder, I’m in!

Deceived explores the marriage of Manningham and her new husband. He seems perfect at first, but a series of literal and figurative gaslighting events make her realize that the truth may not be what appears on the surface.

Huzzah!

Tony Award nominees Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin’s comedy Huzzah! Directed by Annie Tippe is one I’m really looking forward to in 2025!

It’s the story of two sisters, a princess and an insurance agent, as they struggle to save their father’s renaissance faire from going the way of the unicorn. They invest the company’s payroll hiring the greatest swordsman in the Ren Fairre circuit as a last-ditch effort. Will they succeed or lose everything trying?

Small

This show sounds very interesting to me because the entire autobiographical performance is a one-man show telling the story of Bobby!

Bullied in high school for his small stature, he finally ‘grows into his own’ as a racetrack jockey. But when his body starts to grow, he finds himself fighting so his dreams don’t slip away.

Season Packages

The Old Globe introduced some brand new ticket packages for their 2025 season.

  • 2-Play Festival Package
  • 3-Play Comedy
  • 3-Play Comedies and Musicals
  • 4-Play New Way to Play Package
  • 4-Play Globe Package
  • 8-Play Globe and White Package
  • 10-Play Globe, White, and Festival Package

Each of these season packages ensure you get tickets to the shows and on the dates you desire before single tickets go on sale. I think they are a really smart idea that can make the experience of visiting the Old Globe a lot less stressful.

Check with the Old Globe for the details about each package deal and to see what’s available.

Group and Ticket Discounts

Groups of 10 or more may qualify for group discount rates.

Discounts are sometimes available for teachers and senior citizens.

For 2025, the Old Globe has discount programs for teens, guests under 30 plus military members and their families under the Blue Star Theatres program.

Currently, I see discount tickets for House of India and One of the Good Ones, but more may be made available later in the season. While they don’t always offer the best seats in the theater, the price is so cheap that I think it’s well worth a visit.

How Much are Tickets for the Old Globe Theater?

This is a tough question to answer because it really depends on so many factors.

What show do you want to see and at what time? Where would you like to sit? Are you attending as part of a group or possibly are you a teen, under 30 or a military family member? Perhaps you bought a season package?

Your best bet is to check the pricing online or with the box office to get an idea of what you can expect to pay.

Yes. If you are attending a popular event and are concerned parking may not be available, you can purchase parking through an app like Spot Hero. You can also reserve valet parking in advance.

Is There Valet Parking?

Speaking of valet, valet parking is available in the San Diego Zoo’s parking structure, with shuttle service between the valet drop-off point and The Old Globe’s Copley Plaza available for those who need it.

Getting the Most out of San Diego’s Historic Balboa Park

With 1,200 acres of park space and more than a dozen museums to enjoy, Balboa Park is the place to be this 2025!

Purchase your museum tickets in advance to enjoy all that Balboa Park has to offer, from the San Diego Air & Space Museum and San Diego Automotive Museum to The Veterans Museum at Balboa Park and the San Diego Museum of Art.

While each museum and attraction can be visited separately, the cheapest way to see the most attractions is with the pre-purchase of a Go City San Diego pass. Use the discount code GVSD5OFF for even more savings!

Stay at the Carte Hotel San Diego Downtown

I asked our founder Todd where he suggests his out of town family and even local friends looking for a staycation should stay when they come to a show at the Old Globe. He quickly answered with the Carte Hotel San Diego Downtown.

While there aren’t any hotels in Balboa Park, the Carte Hotel San Diego Downtown is located just a short 1.2 miles away. It’s a great spot to stay to enjoy multiple days of fun at Balboa Park and many other San Diego attractions.

When you choose the hotel, you’ll get to take in stunning bay and city views from your room’s floor-to-ceiling windows, enjoy a full-service sea to table dining experience at its Watercolors restaurant and bar, and get your sweat on in its 28,000-square-foot fitness facility.
