Whether you’re looking for music, comedy, or theatrical performances, the 2025 season at the Balboa Theatre is bursting with variety.
As I compared the Balboa Theatre’s 2025 season calendar to that of its sister theatre just a few blocks away, the contrast was apparent. The San Diego Civic Theatre’s 2025 season calendar features mostly Broadway productions like Hamilton and The Book of Mormon, while the Balboa Theatre features primarily stand-up comedians and concerts, with a few production shows, a couple ballet performances, and even a show or two designed specifically for kids!
For me personally, seeing comedy stars like Sam Morril and David Sedaris could make for a great night with family and friends as could the music of the Toad the Wet Sprocket and a Bee Gees Tribute band that will surely have the crowd on their feet!
What I know for sure is that with about 50 unique performances on the Balboa Theatre’s season calendar, there will be something for everyone!

How Old is the Balboa Theatre?
Before we dive into all the exciting events scheduled for 2025, I want to also tell you a bit more about the Balboa Theatre itself because it is just a really cool theatre!
It is one of the oldest theater venues in San Diego, even predating the historic Old Globe Theatre. Located in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, the Balboa Theatre’s roots date back to 1924, making it over 100 years old!
During World War II, the Theatre’s Fourth Avenue office wing was used to house sailors before they shipped out of San Diego.
In 1996, it gained a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. After undergoing a $26.5 million restoration, the Balboa Theatre reopened in 2008. Today, alongside the San Diego Civic Theatre, each year brings a new exciting lineup.

Experience the Gaslamp Quarter
While Balboa Park is one of my favorite areas in San Diego, I don’t want you to get confused and think you’ll find the Balboa Theater in the park. The theatre is actually located in Downtown San Diego, more specifically in the Gaslamp Quarter.
The Gaslamp Quarter neighborhood offers so much to do and see! It’s perfect for evening entertainment and is a nice place to catch the sunset.
You’ll also be able to take a foodie tour like Brothels Bites & Booze Tour or spend time at haunted hangouts, which I think are the perfect follow-up activities to a night at the theater.
You can even stay at one of my favorite hotels in the area, the Horton Grand Hotel.
It’s worth mentioning that you can experience all the neighborhood, and San Diego has to offer at a discount when you pick up a Go City San Diego pass using discount code GVSD5OFF ahead of your travels. The pass ensures the lowest ticket prices for many of the area’s attractions, museums and tours.
Golden Era of Theatre
Take a moment to explore the historic architecture and details of the theatre before the show starts. The ornate decor and unique features add to the overall experience and transport you back in time.
