Immerse Yourself in the Beauty & Emotion: The San Diego Opera

Getting Ready to See a Show at the Civic TheaterPlaza at the San Diego Civic Theater

If you asked me at 18 years old if I wanted to go to the opera, I'd say it probably wasn't for me. And I get that. The opera can have a reputation of wealthy folks in tuxedos and formal wear going to listen to high-pitched voices in a language you can't understand.

But then I personally went to see the San Diego Opera with my wife and wow would I have been wrong! There is something really special that I never expected.

The San Diego Opera: A Local's Perspective

What I appreciate most is that the San Diego Opera feels 'elegant without being intimidating'. The San Diego Civic Theatre has that classic grandeur, but the crowd is warm and welcoming - not pretentious. You'll see everything from cocktail dresses to nice jeans, and no one judges.

The performances themselves are powerful, emotional, and surprisingly accessible, even if you're not an opera regular. I will also say that the English supertitles help a lot, and the productions are always beautifully staged.

So, if you're looking for a date night that feels different - something memorable that doesn't revolve around a bar or a movie - the San Diego Opera is one of the best options in the city! It's culture, romance, and a great excuse to make an evening of it in Downtown San Diego.

An Exciting Year of Opera in 2026

As the San Diego Opera prepares for another banner year, audiences can expect one thing: a celebration of tradition and innovation!

This monumental year will present operas from Gioachino Rossini, Georges Bizet, and Gregory Spears.

I can tell you from experience that the San Diego Opera always delivers. With grand productions, uplifting music, and live cultural performances, you won't want to miss a single moment of this season.

Local Tips
Arrive early for free pre-opera talks
Get there 30 minutes before showtime for a free 25-minute talk that gives insider context about the performance. It's held in the main seating area and makes the opera so much more enjoyable, especially if you're new to it. Locals know this is the secret to getting the most out of your night!

The San Diego Opera: Past & Present

San Diego's opera roots date back decades, with many memorable productions and vocalists gracing the stage to perform for our community.

Let's have a quick look at the history of the opera in San Diego and then dive into what you can expect in 2026!

The San Diego Opera: A Brief History

Founded on May 5, 1965, the San Diego Opera opened to a packed house with an English-language production of the classic "La Bohème".

It all began humbly, presenting touring companies and productions from San Francisco and across the US to an audience of mainly local students. During the opening year the company stuck with performing productions sung in English, slowly introducing the works in their original languages as the audience grew.

After years of success, the San Diego Opera became an esteemed member of the international opera community. Then before nearly shutting down in 2014, a handful of passionate employees raised $2 million from the public to keep the art alive in San Diego. Over half of those donations were from first-time donors.

Today the San Diego Opera has become a cherished and respected cultural resource for all of San Diego, offering a full season of performances for the 2026 and into the 2027 season!

What Have Been the Most Memorable San Diego Opera Productions?

The San Diego Opera has had so many memorable productions over the past few years. My personal favorite classics have included:

  • Madama Butterfly
  • A Masked Ball
  • Salome
  • The Daughter of the Regiment
  • La Bohème
  • We'll Meet Again: The Songs of Kate Smith
  • Aging Magician

Famous Vocal Performances at the San Diego Opera

The San Diego Opera is very prestigious and highly respected among the international opera community. It's no wonder then that many well-known vocalists within the opera community have also performed in San Diego including:

  • Bobbie Ball-Bradley
  • Dame Joan Sutherland
  • Karen Valentino
  • Luciano Pavarotti
  • Plácido Domingo
  • Renée Fleming
  • Steve Howard
  • And many more…

And with that, there are more amazing productions on the schedule for the year ahead!

2026 & 2027 Productions

The 2026-2027 opera schedule includes four incredible selections.

  • Fellow Travelers - July 10th - 12th, 2026
  • Rigoletto - October 23rd - 25th, 2026
  • Susannah - February 12th - 14th, 2027
  • The Marriage of Figaro - April 2nd - 4th, 2027

I'm hoping to see at least one of these productions with Fellow Travelers and The Marriage of Figaro being my top choices.

Fellow Travelers

This production is based on Thomas Mallo's novel that recently became a Showtime miniseries. It tells the story of Timothy Laughlin. He's a college grad when he arrives in the nation's capital to join the fight against communism. When he meets a State Department official, it leads to a secret love affair and much more.

This production will be performed with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra.

You can see it at the Balboa Theatre from July 10th - July 12th, 2026.

The Marriage of Figaro

Figaro is back from The Barber of Seville, and he's getting married! This time he takes the stage with disguises, desires and deception in a Mozart masterpiece that is sure to enchant the audience.

You can see this performance at the San Diego Civic Theatre from April 2nd – April 4th, 2027.

More Opera

Earlier this year, the San Diego Opera put on The Barber of Seville at The San Diego Civic Theatre. They also performed a riveting rendition of Carmen with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in March.

There was also a production of Cotton with the La Jolla Music Society at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla. It was a co-production with the La Jolla Music Society. While I couldn't make it to the show, I heard it was amazing! I hope they do another one next year that I can catch.

Where to See the San Diego Opera

Seeing, and hearing, the incredibly powerful and talented voices performing a traditional opera is an experience you have to try at least once.

You'll have a few options of where to go with one main venue for the professional San Diego Opera.

Where Can I Hear an Opera in San Diego?

While I've seen the San Diego Central Library offer opera education talks and the Jacobs Music Center has hosted orchestral and vocal performances, the primary venue for opera performances is the San Diego Civic Theatre in Downtown San Diego.

They also host smaller 'chamber opera' productions at the historical Balboa Theatre.

The San Diego Civic Theatre: At a Glance

I've been to several performances by the San Diego Opera at the San Diego Civic Theatre, and every time it genuinely feels like a special occasion!

There's something about the ritual of it - picking out what to wear, heading downtown early for dinner at one of the Gaslamp Quarter spots, then walking over to the Civic Theatre as the sun sets. It's the kind of evening that makes me feel like I'm doing something a little more elevated than my usual night.

With that in mind, here is what you can expect when visiting the San Diego Civic Theatre.

  • Located at 1100 Third Ave, at 11 stories tall - the theater stands out
  • 1,218 comfortably plush seats - including accessible-friendly seating
  • Close to several delicious restaurants – try the Bronze Bird or The Taco Stand
  • Public transportation options – MTS Bus, San Diego rideshare, San Diego Trolley

Parking Information for the San Diego Civic Theatre

The Evan V. Jones Parkade operated by Ace Parking located at 1st Ave and A Street offers weekend and evening event parking for $15. The height limit is 6 feet, 8 inches.

There's a parking garage across 3rd Avenue from the theater and additional parking garages and concourse parking a couple of blocks north of the location.

I also know that the Wells Fargo Plaza parking garage located at 401 B Street at the corner of 4th and B Streets is just two blocks from San Diego Civic Theatre and about 4 blocks from the Balboa Theatre. I've seen advanced parking passes available online for $10 versus the $15 day of price. These do not include weekday matinee performances.

The Balboa Theatre: At a Glance

You can also see the opera, usually 'chamber opera' performances, at the Balboa Theatre. Here's what you can expect when visiting that location:

  • Located at 868 4th Ave., it's a beautifully crafted 5-story building
  • 1,335 fold-down plush seats
  • Plenty of nearby restaurants - perfect for a date night/night on the town
  • Accessible by public transportation

Note that the San Diego Civic Theatre and historic Balboa Theatre are about 3 blocks apart meaning you can use the same public transportation options and restaurant suggestions for both venues!

Parking Information for the Balboa Theatre

For the best parking options near the Balboa Theatre, you'll want to head to Broadway Circle and 2nd Ave. for the underground parking at the NBC Building parking garage at 225 Broadway. An alternative is to park at the Horton Plaza Garage on 4th Avenue.

The 225 Broadway Garage is $15. The Horton Plaza Garage is $10 when validated at the theatre before you head back to your car.

Community & The Opera: Working Hand in Hand

One of my favorite things about the San Diego Opera is the way it collaborates with the community.

Even when they are not performing for the area, they are giving back in other ways so that more people can get involved in the beautiful world of opera. The best part is that many of these opportunities are free!

Community Events

If you're a teacher, I would highly recommend taking your class to Student Night at the Opera. Your students can see the final dress rehearsal of the show for free.

Community concerts are also offered. Check the San Diego Opera website for more details. Tickets are free, but reservations are recommended.

I would check their website frequently to see if they add any other community events. The Opera community is always looking for ways to give back.

Pre-Opera Talks

You can arrive early and enjoy a free 25-minute pre-opera talk ahead of performances in the main floor seating area.

Talks begin at 6:40pm for evening performances and 1:10pm for Sunday matinees.

Post-Opera Talk Backs

Another cool way to learn a little more about the opera is through a post-opera talk. These take place about 10 minutes after curtain call for San Diego Civic Center Saturday and Sunday performances. You can join the cast for an informal Q&A session at the Dress Circle section where they'll share details about onstage and backstage events of the performance.

Be aware, times and availability for both talks can change at any moment without notice. Please inquire beforehand to ensure availability.

General Guidelines

Below are a few general guidelines:

  • Silence or turn off all cellular devices.
  • There is no late seating, so it is crucial to arrive on time
  • Please do not talk during the performances - save conversations for intermission
  • Arrive early before the performance to allow adequate time

Are There Food & Drinks Available at the Theaters?

Yes! There are multiple bars and concession stands. Just know that they accept credit, debit and all major contactless and mobile pay methods like Google Pay. They don't accept cash.

What to Wear

While there may not be strict guidelines, you won't want to show up in sweats. Cocktail attire is usually recommended. So, a cocktail dress or skirt and blouse for the ladies, and suits, or a nice shirt and pants for the men.

If you're going on opening night, you may want to dress more formally. Matinees are typically more relaxed.

What is the Easiest Way to Get Around Downtown San Diego?

Since the Civic Theatre and the Balboa Theatre are both located in Downtown San Diego, catching the San Diego Trolley is a very easy and convenient way to get around!

You'll want to download the app before you arrive.

This will allow you to park away from the immediate city center where parking can be expensive, and traffic can be congested.

Add A Daytime Activity

The San Diego Natural History Museum located in nearby Balboa Park has everything for the history, dinosaur, and fossil enthusiasts in your group. I think it's a nice activity to check out during the day before a trip to see the opera.

A Go City San Diego pass includes access to all four floors of the museum plus the 2D films playing in the museum's dedicated theater.

The pass gives you discounted admission to the museum and more than 40 other attractions around San Diego. Use our code GVSD5OFF for additional savings!

Live cultural musical performances by the San Diego Opera are a great way to experience this art form to the fullest. If you've never been, I would highly recommend making it a point to get there. You'll thank me later!
