The Roar Returns: Preparing for 2025 San Diego Bayfair

San Diego Bayfair at Ski Beach in Mission BayGrassy Area with Picnic Benches at Ski Beach Park

It’s nearly time for the return of one of Mission Bay’s oldest traditions: the San Diego Bayfair boat races!

Locals like our site’s founder Todd still know the Bayfair best as the Thunderboats, which is a name that dates all the way back to the start of the event in the 1960s. The name came from the thunderous sound of the boats’ engines, and it’s still kept alive as the namesake of the organization behind the event, Thunderboats Inc.

I just checked the weather forecast for this weekend and it’s looking excellent with mostly sunny skies and highs in the low 70’s. So whether you’re interested in checking it out for the boats or the fun, beachy atmosphere, this event is one you won’t want to miss!

What is the San Diego Bayfair?

As someone that knows the San Diego Bayfair event quite well, I’d describe it as a powerboat competition and festival featuring all types of really powerful boats.

But I’d also say that the event is more than just a boat race! It’s San Diego’s largest beach festival with live music, food, and family-friendly games.

It’s a bit like walking around a car show, but with boats on the beach instead!

When and Where is the 2025 San Diego Bayfair Event?

San Diego Bayfair 2025 will take place from Friday, September 12th until Sunday, September 14th, 2025.

The event will be held in Mission Bay Park on Mission Bay itself. If you’re looking for where to go, your best bet is Fiesta Island, Crown Point Beach, or Vacation Isle Park. There will be parking at these locations and these are all great places to start to check out the powerboats and the racing!

Powerboating in San Diego

What started as a hydroplane race in Mission Bay Park back in 1964 has evolved into the must-attend event for boating enthusiasts and racing fans of all kinds.

The standout attraction is the powerboat competition, but it’s also cool to see all the different styles of boats. From Grand Prix America and H1 hydroplanes to Formula One tunnel boats, you’ll have the opportunity to see both modern and vintage vessels at this year’s event.

What Other Events are Upcoming in Mission Bay Park?

A week after Saturday’s Bayfair events will mark the start of the Pacific Islander Festival set for Saturday, September 20th and Sunday, September 21st at Ski Beach. The multi-day event will be a celebration of the traditions, art, and language of the Pacific Islanders featuring cultural performances, food, and educational opportunities.

As a bonus idea, San Diego Restaurant Week 2025 kicks off on the last day of Bayfair, Sunday September 14th, and lasts for eight days until Sunday, September 21st. With more than 100 restaurants participating this year, you’re sure to find a multi-course meal, a deal, or a new restaurant during this exciting event!

San Diego Bayfair Tickets and Admission

Single day and multi-day tickets are still available on Bayfair’s official site for the weekend jam packed with exciting events. There also may be ‘day of’ availability at the entrance gates of East Vacation Island/Ski Beach, Crown Point or Fiesta Island.

Let’s have a look at the options to get you and your family into the event!

Ticket Options

Friday is a more relaxed day with early races kicking off while Saturday will likely be a bit busier, and finally Sunday is a day of racing and the big car show.

If you want to be part of all of the action, I’d recommend the 3-Day Super Pass which includes access to all the boat races, pit access, and the car show. If you’re really into boats or just want to spend a fun weekend outside on Mission Bay, I think the 3-Day Super Pass is by far the best deal!

  • Friday General Admission - $28
  • Saturday General Admission - $38
  • Sunday General Admission - $38
  • Bayfair 3-Day Super Pass - $68

Are There Discounts for Military Members and Their Families?

A simple discount wouldn’t be enough to show how much Bayfair appreciates our service men and women.

Active military members and reservists with a valid ID can get in absolutely FREE all weekend long! Spouses of these military members can also get 50% off admission.

Parking Passes

If you’re looking for a parking pass, your options will be at Crown Point South or Fiesta Island. Both locations sell single day and 3-day parking passes. There are no ‘in and out’ privileges at either location, so unfortunately you won’t be able to come and go.

There’s a free shuttle bus that will take you to East Vacation Island and Fiesta Island if you park in the Crown Point South parking lot and East Vacation Island and Crown Point if you choose the Fiesta Island parking lot.

Prices for the parking passes are as follows.

  • Crown Point Parking Single Day - $26
  • Crown Point Parking 3-Day - $68
  • Fiesta Island Parking Single Day - $12
  • Fiesta Island Parking 3-Day - $35

The Bayfair features multiple types of racing and extreme sporting events. These include the Grand Prix America, H1 Unlimited, and multiple APBA Classes.

There’s also the return of the Hydro Games at Crown Point.

Many races will take place on the historic 2.5-mile Bill Muncey racecourse, named to honor the Unlimited hydroplane racer who was instrumental in creating the course and the first San Diego hydroplane race in 1964.

A Full Schedule of Events

You can find the complete schedule of events on Bayfair’s homepage and let me tell you that there is seemingly something scheduled for every half hour all weekend long!

Friday Highlights

On Friday, September 12th, events start at 9:00am with the Southern California Speedboat Club classes with festivities concluding for the day at 5:00pm.

Friday highlights for me include the H1 Unlimited Qualifying at 12:50pm, Grand Prix America Qualifying at 2:00pm, and Hydro Games also at 2:00pm.

Saturday Highlights

On Saturday, September 13th, the schedule is even more packed starting at 8:15am with Flatbottom and Grand National Testing and finishing the day with Pictures in the EVI Pits concluding at 5:15pm.

Highlights I’m looking forward to include the Lowrider Car and Bike Event at Crown Point at 9:00am, the Gran Prix heats that take place all day, the Pro Stock Final at 2:00pm, and the Crackerbox Final which is set for 3:20pm.

Sunday Highlights

Sunday, September 14th, is a day where champions will be crowned! Events run from 8:30am and last until 5:30pm with the Hydro Games Awards Ceremony.

Highlights for me are the San Diego Bayfair Cornhole Tournament at Crown Point at 10:00am, Classic Car Show hosted by Car Show California also at 10:00am, Grand National Final at 1:00pm, and the H1 Unlimited Final for the Bill Muncey Cup presented by Samson Rope at 3:40pm.

Honestly, there are so many races on Sunday that for me, if I could only go for one day, this would be my choice!

Beyond the Races: Entertainment & Activities

Tickets to the Bayfair don’t just let you watch the races. They also grant access to tons of other fun activities and performances!

You can listen to live music from local artists, peruse the food and vendor stalls, and play games like cornhole. There’s also a low rider and car show at Crown Point.

Families might enjoy watching the races from Vacation Island, which has a great vantage point and lots of space for chairs.

Setting Records in San Diego

The San Diego Bayfair has seen a number of big names in the powerboat racing scene rise to fame, including Dave Villwock. Back in 1999, he set the world record for lap speed for unrestricted turbine boats right on the Bill Muncey course - and it’s a record that still stands today.

Villwock went on to win nine Bill Muncey Cups, making him the most decorated racer at the Bayfair. But each year brings new opportunities for setting records, and 2025 is sure to be a race to remember.

Looking Ahead: The Legacy & Future of Bayfair

San Diego Bayfair will be celebrating its 61st anniversary in 2025, so to call it a time-honored tradition is an understatement!

Of course, those 61 years weren’t always smooth sailing. It was only two years ago that locals wondered if the races would go on at all. Luckily, 2024 was an incredible year of action.

The Bayfair’s Race Director Bob Davies and the rest of the Board of Governors remains committed to bringing the Bayfair back to Mission Bay for the foreseeable future. With new funding from the San Diego Tourism Marketing District and the help of hundreds of volunteers, the Bayfair is planned to continue going strong.

Jimmie Johnson, a 7-time NASCAR champion, has even floated the idea of making an appearance to drive the famous Blue Blaster hydroplane at Bayfair.

Getting to San Diego Bayfair, Where to Park & Stay

With the races taking place on Mission Bay, there are a few locations to choose from where you’ll be able to take in all the action. If you’re like me and my family, then a clear view of the water is all you’ll need.

With that in mind though, there are a couple spots that will also give you the ability to check out the boats, wander through a car show, catch a cornhole tournament, and more!

Free Shuttle

There is a free shuttle service that runs throughout the weekend every 15 minutes from 6:00am until 5:30pm that will take you to any of the main locations.

How Do I Get to San Diego Bayfair?

To get to San Diego Bayfair 2025 you need to head to Mission Bay. The best viewing and activity locations will be located at Crown Point South and Vacation Isle with economy parking options located on Fiesta Island.

Let’s explore how to best get to each location!

How to Get to Crown Point South

If you’re interested in the Best of the West jet ski course, the Hydro Flight course for the Hydro Games, the Low Rider show on Saturday, Southern California Street Rods Car show on Sunday, or even the cornhole tournament, then you’ll want to head to Crown Point South.

Crown Point Dr. runs basically north to south from Pacific Beach down the peninsula into Mission Bay. If you’re driving in from North County or Downtown San Diego on the 5, take the Garnet Ave. exit which then turns into Balboa Ave. as you head towards the beach. I suggest taking a left on Ingraham St. and taking that all the way to Crown Point Drive. If there are road closures, just follow the signs which will guide you right to the parking lot.

How to Get to Vacation Isle

Vacation Isle and the Ski Beach area in particular will feature vendors, a beer garden, the corporate hospitality area, the H1 pits, excellent viewing of the Limited Boats start and finish line, and more.

If you’re coming in from the south, take W. Mission Bay Dr. to Ingraham St. past SeaWorld San Diego across the bridges to Vacation Isle. From Pacific Beach, take Ingraham St. across the bridge right to Vacation Isle.

How to Get to Fiesta Island

Fiesta Island is the third location to head to which features a large general parking lot, a bus stop, and multiple RV lots along Mission Bay. I’d say this is the affordable parking option where you’ll want to grab the shuttle bus to the other two locations to be in the thick of the action.

Fiesta Island is located on the east side of Mission Bay with the only road headed in onto Fiesta Island Rd. connecting to Mission Bay Dr.. If you’re coming in from Downtown, I suggest that you take Pacific Hwy all the way north which turns into Mission Bay Dr.

RV Parking

There are RV spots on Crown Point, East Vacation Island and Fiesta Island. Each location is offering four and five night packages which generally include a few 3-Day Super Passes and space to park your tow vehicle if not more.

Prices range from $500 on Fiesta Island up to $1,625 for the premium experience on East Vacation Island. There’s a form to fill out on Bayfair’s website to request a space and a note that there may be additional spaces available through the Bayfair office that are not available online. You can also try calling them at 858-578-7454.

If you can’t get a spot at the event, check out our article on RV camping in San Diego for more great places to park your RV around the city.
