I've always loved the San Diego Zoo. I think it's one of those places that just gets everything right! So when it comes to their seasonal events, whether it's their Food, Wine & Brew Festival in the spring, HalGLOWeen in the fall, or Jungle Bells in the wintertime, I'm all in!

And while I'm going to tell you all about Jungle Bells at the San Diego Zoo in 2025, our founder Todd is another expert at visiting the San Diego Zoo with his family. He told me that while the Zoo always is an amazing experience for all ages year-round, Jungle Bells really takes it to the next level with stunning decorations, colorful lights, festive shows, and that unmistakable Zoo magic!

What Exactly is Jungle Bells at the San Diego Zoo?

Jungle Bells is the San Diego Zoo's annual winter holiday event featuring holiday lights, amazing entertainers, lots of talented live musicians, and a healthy dose of holiday spirit!

What Makes Jungle Bells So Special?

The San Diego Zoo offers a ton to explore, making every visit feel effortless, fun, and genuinely special. It's hard to put into words, but the zoo has this way of making you feel like you're stepping into a different world for a few hours. The animals, the pathways, the design of the exhibits - it all just works so well together to create an experience that never gets old!

So when you layer in Jungle Bells on top of that, and the whole place levels up! The holiday shows, the dancing lights, the decorations - the Zoo doesn't half-do anything, and this event is no exception. It's festive, beautifully done, and honestly one of the most joyous annual celebrations in San Diego.

When is Jungle Bells in 2025?

Jungle Bells is scheduled daily from Friday, December 19th, 2025, to Sunday, January 4th, 2026, from 9:00am until 8:00pm, excluding Christmas Eve on December 24th, 2025.

As a bonus, Santa is coming to town on Saturday, November 28th, 2025, when Santa's Factory opens for the season. He'll be there on select dates until Christmas Day, because after that he has to return to the North Pole of course!

Local Tips
Visit After Dark for the Best Light Displays
Locals know the Holiday Light Treks are the real showstopper at Jungle Bells. Arrive after 5pm when the lights turn on to experience the Rainbow Forest, Painted Jungle, and interactive Holiday Light Symphony. The zoo is less crowded in the evening, making it easier to enjoy the displays.

Are There Any Ticket Deals?

The cheapest way to get into the San Diego Zoo and Jungle Bells is with a Go City San Diego pass. You can also use it to get into SeaWorld San Diego's Christmas Celebration as well as more than a dozen family-friendly museums in Balboa Park.

Of course, you can also hop over to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido to check out their winter celebrations, too! These two premier San Diego attractions are often compared as the best things to do for wildlife lovers, and the Safari Park's Wild Holidays has a nice selection of fun holiday events and activities as well.

Festive Activities and Entertainment

Now that you know a little about the event and how to get tickets, let's check out the activities and experiences that are set to arrive this December at the San Diego Zoo's Jungle Bell celebration!

Jingle Brass

You can't have a proper holiday celebration without music! You won't want to miss the Jungle Brass playing all of your classic holiday favorites. Jungle Bells is my personal favorite!

The Jingle Brass band will take the Front Street Stage to play renditions of festive tunes nightly. Their 25-minute shows will run at 4:30pm, 5:30pm, 6:30pm, and 7:30pm.

Reindeer Games

Sharing Front Street Stage with the Jingle Brass will be fun, interactive Reindeer Games that invite kids to dance and play along. These will begin on the hour at 5:00pm, 6:00pm, and 7:00pm.

Entertainers at the Food, Wine and Brew at the San Diego Zoo

Jack Frost Juggler

I'm always amazed when I see jugglers, and I'm sure this show won't disappoint!

Jack Frost's juggling skills will be on display as he roams around the Wildlife Explorers Basecamp. Shows will take place at 4:00pm, 5:00pm, 6:00pm, and 7:00pm, and last 30 minutes.

Holiday Troubadour

The Holiday Troubadour will also be found roaming around the Wildlife Explorers Basecamp, performing holiday classics on acoustic guitar in 30 minute sets at 4:30pm, 5:30pm, and 6:30pm.

Additional Highlights

You're probably noticing that a lot of what sets the mood is the live holiday music which I personally love…but there's more!

Kids can sit on Santa Claus's lap and have their picture taken on select dates starting November 28th at Santa's Factory in the Price Education Center of the Lost Forest. They'll also be invited to listen to a wildlife-themed take on a classic story with Dr. Zoolittle's One Wild Night Before Christmas, scheduled for the Africa Rocks Stage in the Africa Rocks area.

Plus, there are a number of fun activities that will await you at the Urban Jungle and Outback!

Toy Shop Hop

If you've ever wanted to see elves doing aerial acrobatics tricks, the Toy Shop Hop show will offer a new look at Santa's helpers when they perform at Sydney's Grill in Urban Jungle.

15-minute shows will be held at 3:00pm, 4:00pm, 5:00pm, and 6:00pm.

Dr. Harry & His Holiday Friends

Your kids can meet the zoo's mascots to wish him a Merry Christmas and while you snap some photos all by the Outback's Boardwalk Beer Garden. Dr. Harry, Churchill Polar Bear, Sydney Koala, and friends will be there waiting to say hi to you and your kids this holiday season!

Meet and greet sessions last about 25 minutes and will be held twice daily, at 3:30pm and 4:30pm. These are always little fun activities that kids seem to love!

Holiday Harmonies

After Dr. Harry & His Holiday Friends call it a day, you can enjoy the sounds of The Holiday Harmonies.

New in 2025, this talented a cappella quartet will bring their unique arrangements of holiday favorites to the Boardwalk stage. And a tip, you'll want to stick around until the end of the performance for a dusting of winter "snow" during the finale.

Their 20-minute performances will be held at 5:30pm, 6:00pm, 6:30pm, and 7:00pm.

Embark on the Holiday Light Treks

Back by popular demand in 2025 after their debut last year, the Holiday Light Treks after dark are one of the highlights of the event I can highly recommend.

Similar to the light displays at the Safari Park's Wild Holidays, these walk-through experiences cast the nighttime zoo in a whole new light, creating a magical backdrop for photos and timeless memories.

All holiday light displays run continuously from 5:00pm until 8:00pm.

Holiday Light Discovery

You'll want to make time after sunset to venture along the Lost Forest's Tiger Trail to see Christmas and other holiday-themed decorations setting the trail all aglow. If it's like 2024, it'll be a family-friendly walk through the jungle featuring special effects, sparkling lights, and seasonal surprises like you've never seen before!

On your journey, you'll find the Rainbow Forest, Painted Jungle, and the Laser Trail.

Holiday Light Celebration

Found from the Bus Tour Unloading Zone to the Outback and Front Street, this colorful extravaganza will include trees and plants lining the interactive pathways cast in bright hues.

This interactive display will feature presents, animal-shaped lights, and a stunning atmosphere. If you've never seen this one, I highly recommend it!

Holiday Light Symphony

You can also become the conductor of your own holiday orchestra at the Holiday Light Symphony, with lights strung up around the Cactus Garden just a few steps from the Upper Africa Rocks stage.

I find this trail especially entertaining as it offers a musical twist with its display synced up to a soundtrack!

Getting to the Zoo

Free Tram at Balboa Park
Free Tram at Balboa Park

Whether you choose to drive or take public transportation, getting to the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park is easy.

Getting to the San Diego Zoo

The best route to take to the San Diego Zoo is Interstate 5 from the north or south as I find it to be the most direct route. The Cabrillo Freeway and Park Blvd. are two additional north to south roads that cut right through the park and will lead you there as well.

Just know that there are lots of signs so you shouldn't get lost.

Where Should I Park?

There is a conveniently located parking lot in front of the zoo where visitors can park.

It does get crowded, so if there is no room, you can park in the overflow lot at Inspiration Park. That's on the east side of Park Boulevard, between President's Way and the Balboa Park Activity Center.

Parking is free for San Diego Zoo ticket holders and San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance members.

A Special Note About Parking in 2026

While it WILL NOT affect your trip to Jungle Bells in 2025, it's worth noting that starting January 5th, 2026, general parking will no longer be free. It will be $16 per vehicle ($8 for City of San Diego residents).

The good news is that it will still be free in 2026 for San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance members.

Shuttle Service

If you're in the Inspiration Point parking lot at Presidents Way, you can take advantage of the Zoo's Free Shuttle service.

It runs from 11:00am until one hour after the zoo closes on weekends and select holiday periods.

What are My Public Transportation Options?

If you don't want to drive and park, you'll have a few public transportation options.

The MTS Bus Rapid 215 and Route 7 are your best options as they stop at the San Diego Zoo. They also have an easy connection in the downtown area from Amtrak and COASTER trains at the Santa Fe Depot and a few Downtown San Diego hotels.

Tips to Celebrate the Season at Jungle Bells

Now that you know all about the 2025 Jungle Bells at the San Diego Zoo event, it's probably pretty clear why it's become one of our team at Go Visit San Diego's favorite holiday activities.

Visiting over the years we've learned a thing or two and have a few more tips and things we think you should know before you attend in 2025.

Is the San Diego Zoo Handicap Accessible?

The San Diego Zoo is very ADA friendly. The zoo provides special 'parking, restrooms, and access to experiences, tour buses, and habitat areas for guests with disabilities'.

Manual wheelchairs and electric scooters are also available to rent for a small fee. Check the Zoo's website for complete details. Service animals are also allowed.

Can I Bring a Backpack into the Zoo?

Yes, you can bring small backpacks and bags inside the zoo. There are also lockers you can rent to store your stuff if you don't want to lug them around.

Are There Any Other Family-friendly Holiday Events in San Diego This Year?

Yes! A few of my family's favorites include going to SeaWorld San Diego's Christmas Celebration, visiting the zoo's sister park's Wild Holidays at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and seeing How the Grinch Stole Christmas! at the Old Globe Theatre.

For a more complete list including more than 20 festive, unique things to do in San Diego in this holiday season, check out our Holiday Season Guide to San Diego Christmas Activities 2025.

A Few More Things to Keep in Mind

  • If you're all about the lights, you'll want to make sure you're at the Zoo once the sun goes down.
  • I suggest you download the PDF Zoo map from the Zoo's website so you can plan your visit and not miss anything!
  • If you're going to be there for a longer day, dress in layers so you are prepared for swings in the temperature.
  • Don't forget to wear comfortable walking shoes too!
