Entrance to the Uniquely Beautiful Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa ParkBridge Over Creek at the Japanese Friendship Garden

The annual Cherry Blossom Festival at the Japanese Friendship Garden is one of my favorite springtime events in San Diego.

Beyond the blooms, the festival is truly about the mix of experiences. I can say that I was quite surprised the first time I attended. There's a nice variety of local vendors, some connected to the cherry blossoms and Japanese culture, and others just adding to the festive atmosphere.

Walking under the blooming cherry trees at the festival, with the gentle buzz of people and the scent of fresh food in the air, always makes me feel connected to both the season and the spirit of the community.

When & Where is the Cherry Blossom Festival?

The annual Cherry Blossom Festival will take place at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park this coming weekend from Thursday, March 12th until Sunday, March 15th, 2026.

Festival Background

Founded to bridge the gap between San Diego and its sister city of Yokohama, Japan, the Japanese Friendship Garden was designed to help bring elements of Japanese culture to Southern California. Celebrating the tradition of hanami, the Cherry Blossom Festival follows through on this mission statement by letting San Diegan residents experience the magic of blooming cherry blossoms.

Japanese cherry trees, also known as sakura, only bloom briefly in the spring, which has made them an enduring symbol in Japanese culture. They often represent the change of the season and the life cycle. The short window of time during which they can be seen is symbolic of the brevity of life. Cherry blossoms are also associated with good fortune.

Local Insider Ticket Information

As someone who's made the Cherry Blossom Festival an annual spring tradition, I've found you really feel the excitement as soon as you get to the Japanese Friendship Garden - especially on the closing Sunday, when the festival energy is in full swing.

Know that the line can look intimidating, but it actually moves quickly if you're patient. That said, if you want to breeze right in, the VIP tickets (Express Pass) with their own separate entrance, which you have to buy in advance, will let you skip the wait entirely. It's worth considering if you don't want to wait, especially with kids in tow!

Can I Use a Go City San Diego Pass for the Festival?

While admission to the garden through the Go City San Diego pass will be accepted during the festival, you'll need to buy a separate ticket to attend the cherry blossom festival.

So while the pass does not include Cherry Blossom Festival admission in 2026, the good thing about grabbing a Go City San Diego pass with our discount code GVSD5OFF is that you'll also receive discounted admission to many other Balboa Park attractions. These can include the world-famous San Diego Zoo, The San Diego Museum of Art, Natural History Museum and many more family-friendly museums and attractions!

Plan a Stay

If you're planning on making your visit a weekend getaway, consider booking a stay at a nearby hotel.

I always recommend the Carte Hotel San Diego Downtown. Located among the restaurants of Little Italy and about a mile from the San Diego Bay, the 4-star hotel has a beautiful lobby and clean, fresh rooms.

It's one of my favorite places to stay in the Downtown San Diego area, which is just a short trip to and from the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park.

Performances at the Cherry Blossom Festival

One of the main draws of the Cherry Blossom Festival is the performance lineup, which will run from 11:00am to 6:00pm every day of the festival. I can say that I was thoroughly impressed last year with the variety and number of performers.

Who is Performing in 2026?

The Japanese Friendship Garden will host four full days of performances at the Inamori Pavilion. These performances highlight different aspects of Japanese culture, from dancing and singing to martial arts.

Highlights include:

  • Alex Guillen
  • Jerry William
  • Asayake Taiko
  • San Diego Budokan
  • Buddhist Temple of San Diego Ondo Dancers

You can also expect to see taiko drummers, a Geisha opera singer, bands inspired by anime and video games, kendo demonstrations, and various additional dance groups.

I have to tell you from personal experience that these performers are truly out of this world! They are quality professionals who are masters of their art. The complete schedule of 2026 performers for each day's events can be found on the event site.

Food at the Festival

I suggest that you take a walk to the lower garden any day of the festival from 10:00 am to 6:00pm and sample some tasty treats. Food vendors will offer a selection of Asian meals, snacks, and drinks. These will include sushi, mochi, dumplings, rice balls, Thai burgers, and sweets like kettle corn and shaved ice.

The mochi dumplings are among my favorites, so I suggest you try one if you attend. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

New in 2026

I'm told there will be new attractions this year. A wall of lanterns and community art exhibit will now be part of the festival. There also always seems to be unannounced surprises so we'll have to discover those together!

If these attractions are anything like what is already included, I know you'll be in for a treat.

Children's Area

Face painting, temporary tattoos, and a sticker bar will be available at the Children's Garden all four festival dates from 11:00 am until 4:00pm. A parent or guardian has to be with the child at all times.

I always notice families getting their faces painted and kids diving into hands-on activities. This is definitely a popular part of the festival.

Yukata Dressing

I don't remember this event being part of the festival last year, so I would definitely try it out! For a $20 fee, you can get dressed in a traditional yukata and take pictures among the cherry blossoms for an unforgettable experience.

This very special event will take place from 10:00am to 4:00pm on Day 2, Friday, March 13th.

Parking & Transportation

There are BIG parking changes to Balboa Park that just took effect at the beginning of 2026 that I want to make you aware of if you plan to attend.

Free Tram at Balboa Park

New Parking Rules for 2026

As of early January 2026, parking is no longer free in Balboa Park. I used to love to be able to park here for free, but times are changing! Lot prices vary so be sure to look around for the best rates. Parking lots near the garden include Organ Pavilion Parking Lot, Palisades and Inspiration Point.

As a local tip, I've had much better luck parking outside Balboa Park in Bankers Hill and walking in, instead of spending ages in the weekend bumper-to-bumper traffic heading into the main park lots.

Fred Shuttle next to the Star of India

Public Transportation – FRED Shuttle

If you don't want to worry about paying to park, I suggest you use public transit.

The local MTS Bus is a solid option. Take Route 7 or Rapid 215 to get to the Japanese Friendship Garden.

If you're coming from Downtown San Diego, the FRED Electric Shuttle runs to the edge of the park. Check their website for the latest pricing, but in my experience, it has been extremely affordable.
