Balboa Park’s Iconic Haunted Trail Returns in 2025

The Haunted Trail of Balboa ParkBella on the The Haunted Trail Throne

Thrills and twisted tales await you at The Haunted Trail in Balboa Park in 2025.

This legendary Halloween attraction and I would say ‘incredibly fun’ haunted Halloween trail in Balboa Park is back for its 26th year. This year, you can expect more screams from Halloween lovers and scare-seekers alike.

My teenage kids and I had so much fun last year that I’ve already purchased my tickets so we can have another night of family fun!

Named as one of the Top 10 Haunted House Attractions in America by CNN, The Haunted Trail of Balboa Park is definitely not for the fainthearted.

When is the Haunted Trail in Balboa Park Open in 2025?

The Haunted Trail will scare guests on select nights from Friday, September 26th to Saturday, November 1st during the 2025 Halloween season.

Times of operation do change depending on what day you go, so be sure to check the official website for the exact dates and times.

Organizers do try to keep things running even if it rains. Check their Instagram page in case of bad weather, because if storms get too crazy, they will close. You will receive an alternate date to attend with instructions if this happens.

Where in Balboa Park is the Haunted Trail?

The entrance for the Balboa Park Haunted Trail is located at Balboa Dr. & Juniper Rd, San Diego, CA 92101. Once you enter the park, look for signs that will guide you to where you need to go.

What Makes the Haunted Trail of Balboa Park a Must-Visit in 2025?

The Haunted Trail is a must-visit in 2025 because it has two haunting attractions in one location!

Your adventure starts with the eXperiment Maze. This is an indoor 3,500 square foot maze that features dark fairy tales, spooky retellings of memorable characters, and plenty of jump scares.

This part took my family and me about 15 minutes, and I think that is about the average time.

The Mile-Long Haunted Trail then leads guests outdoors through its foggy, ghoul and creature-filled twisted trails.

The Haunted Trail is a local favorite, but if you’ve never heard of it, be warned, it’s not young kid-friendly. It’s geared more toward teens and adults, and is not suggested for children under ten, especially if you want to avoid nightmares! We didn’t start taking our kids here until they were teenagers.

Why My Family Loves It

Personally, I can say that the Haunted Trail of Balboa Park is a lot of fun for adults and older kids! It’s perfect for families with teenagers looking for actual scary Halloween fun.

There are quite a few family-friendly Halloween events in San Diego, but along with Howl-O-Scream at SeaWorld San Diego, this is my other favorite Halloween attraction to enjoy with my teenagers.

At this point they’ve outgrown many of San Diego’s incredible Halloween events for younger kids such as the LEGOLAND Brick-Retreat Monster Party, Halloween Spooktacular at SeaWorld San Diego, and even HalGloWeen at the San Diego Zoo, even though they do still love seeing the zoo at night all lit up in neon. As teenagers now, haunted trails, scare zones and a bit of horror movie magic is more what they enjoy.

And at the Haunted Trail of Balboa Park, there are plenty of unique characters, costumes, jump scares, and fun adventures as you go through the mazes. As I mentioned above, we’re going again this year, so if you see us - say hi!

Ticket prices and crowds increase the closer it gets to Halloween. My advice: go NOW! By visiting this week or next, you'll dodge the biggest lines and higher prices that hit in the last half of the month. It's your best bet for a less hectic, more terrifyingly fun night out!

Prices vary depending on the day you choose to go. As a local tip, I’ve noticed that the closer you get to Halloween, the more you’ll pay.
  • VIP Scream Pass Admission tickets will allow you to skip the line to enter the attraction within a 1-hour window of your ticket time via an express pass. Prices for the Scream Pass Admission run from $49.99 to $58.98. These prices also go up as you get closer to Halloween.

Stop #1: The eXperiment Maze

Creepy Monster at the Haunted Trail of Balboa Park
Creepy Monster at the Haunted Trail of Balboa Park

The maze - known for its twisted fairy tales, folklore creatures, and scary encounters - is where your haunted adventure will begin!

As you make your way through the maze, you’ll find reimagined fairy tale characters with a sinister twist for some terrifying and, if I do say so myself, awesome encounters!

Plus, the maze design features plenty of sounds, dark corners, and jump scares to fully immerse you into the haunted atmosphere and get you in the Halloween mood!

A Prelude to Terror

The maze takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes to complete. However, it all depends on how fast you move through it with your group. I can say from personal experience, unless you are extra slow, 15 to 20 minutes is a good guess of how long you’ll need.

The eXperiment Maze is carefully crafted to trick your senses as you go through it. If you find yourself going in circles, don’t be afraid to go back to retrace your steps to find a different path.

But don’t take too long. You won’t want to be “Moldy Locks and her 3 Grizzly Bears” next victims. Also know that if you’re afraid of scary clowns, beware, because there just might be one waiting for you!

You can exit the maze or trail if it proves to be a bit too scary for anyone in your group. But just be aware that there are no refunds if you decide not to complete the maze or trail if it’s too scary.

Nightmares Unlocked: The Mile-Long Haunted Trail

The Haunted Trail of Balboa Park Throne
The Haunted Trail of Balboa Park Throne

For starters, let me tell you that a mile-long haunted trail is a serious distance, so be ready for this haunted hike! It’s been my experience that most haunted houses or trails I’ve been to throughout the years are a fraction of the length of this mile long march. That is one reason, if you like scary Halloween fun, that this haunted trail is worth your time.

To start, you’ll make your way through the outdoor trail’s haunted grove of gnarled oaks and twisted pines.

The Mile-Long Haunted Trail promises to transport guests from the ordinary world into a heart-pounding alternate universe filled with dense fog and otherworldly creatures for a fun, immersive experience.

A Journey Through Fear

This is the place where nightmares lurk and horror fans rejoice!

You’ll first take a step into ancient darkness as you start in the hall of mirrors. Then, get ready for the light and vapors before boarding Freddy Krueger’s ghoul bus. Let me tell you, there’s nothing fun about this bus (but it’s also pretty exciting if you’re into scary Halloween attractions)!

Next, you’ll have to tiptoe your way through the roaming clowns before getting dragged into the Torture Carriage for some intense scares. Your skin will crawl as you see the insects that are living in the rotting mansion. It will then be on to Nuke Town that is aglow with radioactive terror.

Last, but not least, is the decaying cathedral where nuns will be waiting for chainsaw chases as you say your last prayer!

Seriously though – a mile of scares and a solid collection of themed scares zones! Where else are you going to see something like this?

Keep The Scares Going

If you want more spooky experiences available in San Diego, I’d recommend the San Diego: Haunted Ghost Tour by Bus which will take you on a journey through the chilling, dark history of the city.

You’ll get to explore haunted sites like the Davis-Horton House and El Campo Santo Cemetery with your guides and return to your bus for more eerie encounters and spooky stories.

See More Haunts With a Go City San Diego Pass

Of course, with a Go City San Diego pass, you can visit more spooky haunts, my favorite San Diego attractions, and more without having to worry about extra fees, lines, and full-price admission at the door.

If you are a Halloween fan like me, check out the Gaslamp Walking Ghost Tour or Haunted Old Town Walking History + Paranormal Investigation, both require a booking reservation but are included at no extra charge as part of the pass.

Use our exclusive discount code GVSD5OFF for an additional discount!

Getting There & Arrival Tips

Although traffic can get congested, don’t let it scare you. There will be plenty of attractions inside the park to do that!

Driving & Parking Info

The Haunted Trail is at the corner of Balboa Drive and Juniper Road in Balboa Park. If you’re driving, I-5, I-15, and I-8 are all good routes, depending on which direction you’re coming from. Look for the signs for Balboa Park on the highway.

Once you get there, you’ll see that there is no designated parking lot, but you should be able to find parking around Balboa Park. The main parking area is at Inspiration Point, on the east side of Park Boulevard, between President’s Way and the Balboa Park Activity Center.

If you are being dropped off or picked up by family, friends, or a rideshare, the entrance to the Haunted Trail is to the left of the cross streets of Balboa Drive & Juniper Road.

Just keep in mind, as we get closer to Halloween, expect more traffic and longer wait times. My advice…if you can go a little earlier in October, it may be worth it!

Tips Before You Enter Into the Unknown

From clothing to accessibility, check out these tips so you can arrive prepared and make the most out of your trip to The Haunted Trail of Balboa Park.

Accessibility

The Trail is wheelchair accessible, but can be difficult to manage on a powerchair due to the terrain. The official website recommends manual wheelchairs, as they can be pushed or pulled if they get stuck.

Service animals are permitted. However, neither pets, emotional support, nor companion animals are allowed on the Trail.

What Should I Wear to the Haunted Trail?

The trail is one mile long, so wear comfortable shoes! Also, San Diego is known for its cool coastal evenings, so a sweatshirt or light sweater is a good idea.

Safety Restrictions Reminder

Due to the jump scares, strobe light use, fog juice, and more, this event may not be for everyone.

This, unfortunately, also means that pregnant women, infants, and any children who are being carried will be denied entry. Strollers are also not allowed. The event is not recommended for kids under 10.

Also, please be mindful of any medical conditions you or someone in your group may have because this event is not recommended for people who have heart conditions, are prone to seizures, or are not in good general health.

Keep in mind, the Haunted Trail does not give refunds for guests who are too scared to continue through the maze and need to leave early.

As always, use your best judgment and happy haunting!
