Celebrate the Season with a Whoville Adventure in Balboa Park

Todd and Erika Going to How the Grinch Stole ChristmasDr Seuss How the Grinch Stole Christmas at the Old Globe

My family has a number of Christmas traditions, from picking out the best Christmas tree shortly after Thanksgiving at one of San Diego's many Christmas tree lots, to going ice skating at Liberty Station, to opening presents on Christmas morning.

And one more tradition that we've made a part of our celebrations is attending the musical How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Every year I tell myself I've seen it enough times, and every year I'm blown away again. Seeing the Grinch at The Old Globe has just become part of Christmas to me and my kids!

Shows are held at the Old Globe Theatre throughout the holiday season in Balboa Park, which is also home to the San Diego Zoo, another of my family's favorite attractions!

What is How the Grinch Stole Christmas! About?

Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is a family-friendly, playful and amusing musical complete with incredible sets, beautiful costumes, talented actors, and music that your whole family will be singing for days.

A quick spoiler alert warning that if you don't want to know what happens, just skip quickly to the next section!

Based on the classic Dr. Seuss children's book, the story follows a grouchy, green and I'd say very unhappy outsider that really despises everything to do with Christmas. On Christmas Eve he dresses up as Santa taking all the presents and decorations from Whoville only to find that the residents can still find joy independent from all their material things.

I'll leave a few surprises from there but I will tell you that the whole experience is perfect for families, couples, and really anyone looking for a little holiday spirit!

When Will How the Grinch Stole Christmas! be Performed in 2025?

It's hard for me to believe, but 2025 marks the 28th annual performance of The Grinch in Balboa Park's famous theatre, rounding out the Old Globe's yearly calendar.

Starring Andrew Polec in the leading role as the Grinch, the show has been captivating San Diego audiences since the 90s', returning this holiday season, starting Wednesday, November 5th, 2025 with shows until Wednesday, December 31st, 2025.

Where Can I See the Performance?

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! will be performed on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, one of three primary performance venues that are part of the Globe's Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. It's good to know that the theater is a fully enclosed space that will keep you warm on a cool San Diego evening.

Of course the show is the main attraction, but as someone that's seen a number of live performances over the years at the Old Globe Theatre, I can say that the theater is hands-down my favorite venue in San Diego. It just feels so special to walk through the park at night during the holidays, with the lights glowing and the air feeling crisp, then step into this intimate, historic theater for such a heartwarming production.

Built in 1935 and modeled after the Old Globe in London, it's seen its share of fires and remodels. Over the year's it's grown to become the largest theatre complex in San Diego, now standing as California's oldest professional theatre.

Who is this Play Designed For?

I think that San Diego musical theatre fans, those that love a live performance, whether young or old, will enjoy this classic tale.

Ordinarily, children under 3 years old are not allowed to attend performances at the Old Globe Theatre. However, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! runs special all-ages showtimes on most Saturdays and Sundays at 10:30am.

During these shows, kids 2 and under can attend for free and sit in a parent's lap. Call the box office's Ticket Services Department at 619-234-5623 to get a free lap ticket when purchasing adult seating.

All other performances of The Grinch are still restricted to children 3 and older.

Local Tips
Arrive Early to Explore Balboa Park
Most visitors rush straight to the theater, but locals know to arrive an hour early to stroll through the beautiful gardens surrounding the Old Globe. The park is especially magical at night during the holidays with festive lighting, and you'll avoid parking stress while soaking in the atmosphere.

Recommended Hotels Near the Old Globe

I personally think it's a really nice idea to take a night at the theatre and turn it into something truly special by getting a hotel in the area. My family always enjoys staying at The US Grant, which is conveniently located about 1.5 miles from the theatre in Downtown San Diego. As a luxury hotel, it's a real treat for us.

The rooms are comfy, there's on-site dining, and great views. It's also a short walk to the Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego Civic Theatre, the San Diego Convention Center, the USS Midway Museum, and Petco Park.

Embark on a Whimsical Journey to Whoville

Christmas Tree outside the Theater for How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Christmas Tree outside the Theater for How the Grinch Stole Christmas

The performance itself is always beautifully done - from the sets to the costumes to the actors and music, it's an absolute family classic that feels straight out of Whoville. It's also apparent that the actors clearly put their hearts into it. I think it's that perfect mix of nostalgia, family fun, and holiday cheer.

In its adaptation of the classic Christmas tale by Theodor S. Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, The Old Globe Theatre really holds nothing back to bring this story to life on stage.

The Performers: Meet the Grinch and the Whos

The performance of The Grinch was written by Timothy Mason and directed by James Vásquez, based on the original production by Jack O'Brien.

Playing the Grinch for his fifth year now is Andrew Polec, who recently performed in The Beautiful Lady at New York's Greenwich Village. He's joined by Tommy Martinez and David Hibbard, who play young and old Max, respectively.

You'll also get to meet Cindy Lou Who, played by Sofia Barredo, and a whole host of other very talented actors and actresses populating Whoville.

The Music: Classic Songs That Will Warm Your Heart

If you've seen the original 1966 animated classic, you'll recognize many of the tunes in the stage play version. These timeless songs include "Welcome Christmas (Fah Who Doraze)" and "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch."

You'll also hear many new songs, like "Santa for a Day," developed especially for the live show. Credit for the music goes to the Music Director Elan McMahan, Book and Lyrics lead Timothy Mason, Composer Mel Marvin, with additional music by Albert Hague and complementing choreography by John DeLuca and Bob Richard.

The Sets & Costumes: Transforming the Stage into a Snow-Covered Wonderland

Taking cues from The Old Globe Theatre's artistic director Barry Edelstein, the set design of the play will have you convinced you're really in snow-covered Whoville!

Colorful, fun costumes will capture the imaginations of the kids (and kids at heart) in the audience.

Beyond the Show: Making Your Experience Extra Special

Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a magical event that I can only recommend you go to see at least once! But you can make your experience even more exciting with these activities.

Food and Beverages

Food is not permitted in the theatre, so I suggest you grab a bite to eat before the show.

When I go to a show at the Old Globe, I usually eat at Lady Carolyn's Pub, which is located right in the theatre. It opens 90 minutes before curtain drop offering a full bar and a fine selection of soups, sandwiches, and treats. Drinks can also be pre-ordered so they are ready for you at intermission.

As someone that's been to my fair share of shows at the Old Globe Theatre, below are a few additional pre or post show places I'd recommend to grab a meal or drink.

  • The Prado at Balboa Park: Just steps from the theatre, The Prado is known for its world-class cuisine, California fare, happy hour deals, and excellent service.
  • Mister A's: Located on 5th Ave on the west edge of the park, my wife and I love this 12th floor, French & American style elegant rooftop eatery featuring sparkling views of the San Diego Bay and Downtown San Diego skyline.
  • The Corner Drafthouse: If you want local and easy, I recommend this gastropub for an all-in burger or ahi bowl and local Southern California beer. It's my go to spot to grab a craft beer and simple snack before a show.

Balboa Park Museums

Balboa Park is home to more than a dozen family-friendly museums my family really loves visiting. It's become a bit of a tradition that we check out one before we see The Grinch. Below are a few of our favorites.

  • The San Diego Museum of Art: One of San Diego's premiere art collections, you can browse art from many periods and throughout the world. I'd recommend the museums especially for couples.
  • San Diego Model Railroad Museum: A unique experience with a wide collection of model trains, my wife and I love to bring our kids!
  • Museum of Photographic Arts: This museum includes more than 700 photos from about 850 artists with rotating exhibits of photography spanning history. As a local tip - I recommend bringing headphones so you can listen to the audio tour on the app.

The cheapest way to get into all of these museums as well as the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park and about 50 additional attractions in San Diego is with a Go Visit San Diego pass using discount code GVSD5OFF. This is one of our team's top money saving suggestions to all of our friends and family that come in to see a show at the Old Globe or just visit the city.

More Holiday Classics at the Old Globe Theatre in 2025

Attending a winter play at the Old Globe Theatre like The Grinch is the perfect way to put yourself in the holiday mood. My family goes every year! Seeing the show has become one of the highlights of the season for us and for many San Diego families, as it's been the standout winter performance for the last 25+ years.

We love it so much that it's found a spot as part of our articles on the best ways to celebrate Christmas in San Diego and in our complete holiday guide, even earning an honorable mention as a great post-Thanksgiving activity. Honestly, though, you can absolutely get a jump start on Christmas by attending one of the pre-Thanksgiving November performances as well.

It's not just The Grinch, either - other holiday favorites like A Christmas Carol have also found their way onto the stage. Last year, my wife and I watched Ebenezer Scrooge's BIG San Diego Christmas Show at The Old Globe, which we loved, too! It's playing this year as well, so I'd say if you can, consider getting tickets to both shows.

Shows like How the Grinch Stole Christmas! showcase San Diego's commitment to arts engagement. You don't have to go all the way to New York City to watch a Broadway-quality show with your family.

All About Parking & Transportation

Like any event, transportation and parking can be tough. Knowing how to navigate will reduce your stress. Here are some things to know about finding the theatre and where I suggest you park.

Free Tram at Balboa Park
Free Tram at Balboa Park

Where is the Old Globe Theatre?

The theatre is located in Balboa Park off of El Prado between the San Diego Museum of Art and the Museum of Us. It can be accessed from most major freeways via Park Boulevard or the Cabrillo Bridge off of 6th and Laurel Ave.

A tip from a local that's made this mistake before – unless you're arriving by San Diego rideshare, don't enter the theatre's address in your GPS for directions because the physical address is located in a 10-minute parking zone. Instead, use the link on the website to find the map coordinates. You can also find a link with written directions.

Parking

Unfortunately, the theatre does not have its own parking lot. The nearest lots are the Alcazar Parking Lot and the San Diego Natural History Museum lot, but they fill up fast. You can also find parking at the Palisades, Federal, and Spanish Village.

It's a good idea to consider reserving parking in advance. I also suggest that you plan to arrive at least an hour before the show to ensure you find a spot.

My Favorite Public Transportation Options

Consider taking public transportation to the show. Plan your route on the San Diego MTS website which has multiple stops along Park Blvd. that would leave you a short walk from the theater.

If you're starting from Downtown San Diego, you could also take the FRED electric shuttle which can drop you at the edge of the park for just $2.50 per person.

What Attendees Should Know Before They Go

Now that you know a bit about the show and theater, plus how to get tickets and get there, below are a few more things to know before you head to see The Grinch!

Performance Details and Scheduling

Each show is one hour and 20 minutes long with no intermission.

The performance is family-friendly and can be enjoyed by all ages - even my teens still love going! Just be sure to take note of the early matinees starting at 10:30am designed for children three and under which I mentioned earlier in the article.

Accessibility & Special Performances

The theatre is accessible, with accommodations for guests with disabilities. However, you should contact the theatre in advance if you need special seating.

There are a few special performances this season for those in need.

  • ASL-Interpreted Performance: Saturday, November 15th at 5:00pm & Friday, December 12 at 7:00pm
  • Sensory-Friendly Performance: Saturday, December 13th, 2025 at 10:00am
  • Open-Caption Performance: Friday, December 19th at 5:00pm

Dress Appropriately

The theatre does not have an official dress code, but most people wear business casual attire.

If you are visiting from out of town, know that San Diego can get chilly in December, so I think that it is best to wear a long sleeve shirt or light coat. You should also bring comfortable shoes so you can walk around the park before your performance time.
