Balboa Park December Nights: San Diego’s Largest Free Holiday Festival

San Diego Museum of Art December NightsBalboa Park December Nights

For me and my family, Balboa Park December Nights is the event that really kicks off the holidays in San Diego.

Think festive lights and decorated Christmas trees, your favorite Christmas carols, a cup of warm coco perhaps, and a ton of holiday cheer all with an unbeatable Balboa Park vibe. The whole event feels like the holidays done San Diego-style - outdoors, full of culture, good food, and a mix of locals and visitors all enjoying one big community celebration.

It’s one of the big San Diego Christmas events my family and I look forward to each year - we just love it!

What is Balboa Park December Nights?

Balboa Park December Nights is a massive holiday-themed party held in the Balboa Park Cultural District. For two nights each December, Balboa Park completely transforms to welcome in the holiday season in style.

Balboa Park is one of the city’s most iconic locations complete with walking trails, cafes, museums, a ton of green space, and so much more! And during December Nights the whole place lights up with that perfect mix of Christmas spirit and San Diego charm. There’s live music, twinkling lights on the historic buildings, and a sense of community that feels very local and festive.

Local Tips
Park Smart & Eat at the Cottages
Avoid the parking nightmare. Park a bit further out and walk or rideshare in. Head straight to the International Cottages for unique global foods with often shorter lines than the main food stalls. This lets you eat, explore, and enjoy the lights without the biggest hassles.

In addition to the holiday lights and music, you’ll also find a holiday market with a wide variety of vendors, stations for photos with Santa Claus, and a bunch of food stalls.

When is Balboa Park December Nights in 2025?

Balboa Park December Nights will take place Friday, December 5th, 2025 from 3:00pm until 11:00pm and Saturday, December 6th, 2025 from 11:00am until 11:00pm

Free & Popular - A Night to Remember!

For me and my family, the event is one of the best ways to celebrate Christmas in San Diego. It’s not really a surprise then that it’s become one of the most well-attended events of the year in all of Southern California.

And possibly the best part of all is that it’s completely free to attend!

Tickets & Hotels Nearby

It seems like everything is getting more expensive these days. So when I get the opportunity to share an event with my readers that’s completely FREE to attend, I get really excited.

Balboa Park December Nights is a FREE event! You don’t have to pay to get into Balboa Park either. You and your family can take in the atmosphere, the sights and sounds, all at no cost.

Of course, you’ll have to purchase your food and any items from the holiday market, but that’s not a bad deal, right?

Stay the Weekend!

Why not make a weekend getaway or staycation out of your visit and stay at one of the area’s amazing hotels?

At just about a 20 minute walk from the December Nights events, our Go Visit San Diego team recommends one of the nearby Courtyard by Marriott locations, the Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown Little Italy located at 1646 Front St. or the Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown located at 530 Broadway. Both locations offer clean, comfy, and spacious rooms, plus daily housekeeping, which is something I don’t always see these days.

The Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown is located in a historic bank that was converted into the lobby and hotel, a true work of art while the Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Downtown Little Italy has some very budget friendly rates, a nice pool, and views of the beautiful San Diego Bay. You really can’t go wrong with either choice!

Experience the Magic of December Nights 2025: What to Expect

Santa's Sleigh at December Nights in Balboa Park
Santa's Sleigh at December Nights in Balboa Park

As I mentioned above, this is the largest, free, annual holiday festival in San Diego, and I don’t know anyone who doesn’t appreciate a festive, free experience! The event welcomes people of all backgrounds to share in the Christmas spirit.

I attended Balboa Park December Nights for the first time in 2023 with my wife and kids, and we all had an incredible time. I also learned a lot about what it’s all about!

Let’s dive a little deeper into the main attractions so you know what to expect before you attend the 2025 festivities.

A Winter Wonderland in the Heart of the City

One of the most stunning parts of December Nights in San Diego is the light show. Just like houses that go all-out with their decorations, Balboa Park gets transformed with Christmas lights and holiday displays, including a decorated Christmas tree and Santa’s sleigh.

Walking around the winter wonderland feels magical. The upbeat atmosphere and big focus on San Diego’s community feels like what I would call ‘San Diego special’. Of course, the event is for everyone, from locals to visitors, all invited to attend and experience a warm holiday welcome.

The 2024 event was amazing, so I can just imagine what things will look like in 2025.

Rides, Shows, and More

December Nights will also feature special events, including rides, and live performances.

If I could give you a few recommendations, I’d say to visit the Festival of Trees featuring delightfully decorated Christmas trees, then swing by stages stationed throughout the park to experience the live entertainment - watch the musicians, dancers, and entertainers. This was what my family did last year and we plan to do again this year.

You’ll also find a Ferris wheel set up in the Pan American Plaza parking lot, right in front of the San Diego Air and Space Museum.

Global Delights at the International Cottages

One of the best-kept secrets (at least for first-timers) is to check out the International Cottages area located just across Pan American East Road from the Spreckels Organ Pavilion. Each little house represents a different country. During December Nights, they open up and serve authentic food and drinks from their home countries.

There are 33 different houses, some dating back to the 1935 exposition when this part of the park opened, each representing a different ethnic or cultural group. Normally, they don’t offer food service, so this is a rare treat.

I’ve heard rave reviews about the German House, especially for its hearty, traditional food. I plan on putting this on my list this year! I’d say exploring the cottages is one of my favorite parts of the event because my wife and I get to eat, and my kids get to learn a bit at the same time.

In addition to food, there are cultural dances and musical performances, further highlighting and celebrating each country’s unique traditions.

Drink Around the World

Another highlight for me that was popular in 2024, and should be again this year, is the International Spirit Garden’s ‘drink around the world’ event. You guessed it, beers and drinks from around the world!

Set for Friday from 5:00pm until 10:00pm and Saturday from 3:00pm until 10:00pm, you’ll find the garden near the Spreckels Organ Pavilion, just across the small street Pan American East Road.

Family Fun & Cultural Festivities

Balboa Park December Nights is absolutely a family-friendly event offering activities for guests, both young and old.

The Family Zone and STEAM Activities

Even on Winter break, I think it’s great for my kids to learn and play at the same time!

If this sounds good to you, then you’ll want to head to the Family Zone to check out the educational STEAM activities and displays. These are great for younger kids, but visitors of all ages are encouraged to get in on the fun.

The Family Zone is also where your kids can sit on Santa’s lap to tell him what they want for Christmas. It’s the perfect place to snap a free photo for your 2025 Christmas card.

A Diverse Way to Ring in the Holidays

One thing I love about living in San Diego is its diversity of culture and the learning and growth opportunities that it presents for my kids.

From the incredible Mexican taquerias around Old Town San Diego to the Italian restaurants that have made Little Italy famous (and which feature heavily on our list of the best things to do in the neighborhood), there’s no shortage of opportunities to familiarize yourself with cultures from all corners of the world.

And I personally love how celebrating the holidays in San Diego can be so diverse, with Old Town’s Día de los Muertos celebrations in October and into the first few days of November being some of my favorite events of the year, then heading into the Christmas season, December Nights also brings cultural diversity to the forefront!

Transportation & Parking Information

Whether you’re planning to drive or take public transportation, there are several ways to get to Balboa Park for December Nights.

Driving and Parking

If you want to drive, Balboa Park December Nights is easy to find. Located just a few miles northeast of Downtown San Diego, due east from the San Diego International Airport (SAN), and just a few miles from the San Diego Bay, there’s good signage no matter what part of town you're coming from.

And while it’s not hard to find, parking is very limited at the event, with a few free spots in the lots at the San Diego Zoo and City College. All other lots are paid parking ranging from $25-45. These include two lots at Inspiration Point and the Federal Lot, plus the Roosevelt Middle School. Either way, you’ll likely be waiting in long lines both entering and exiting the event.

I’ll give you my personal advice…we always park outside the park and walk in. It’s a bit of a stroll, but totally worth it to avoid the traffic chaos that happens around the event. Walking in will give you a chance to enjoy the lights and live music from a distance before you’re right in the middle of it all.

Public Transportation

As convenient as driving can feel, this is a big event with thousands attending each year, so I strongly suggest skipping the hassle and using public transit.

If you’re starting in Downtown San Diego, the FRED Shuttle runs to the edge of Balboa Park and is only $2.50 per person and a maximum of $5 per group. This is a great deal if you’re going with the family or a large party. But remember, it only runs until about 7:00pm or 8:00pm depending on the day of the week, so plan accordingly.

You can also take the MTS Bus, which runs through the heart of Balboa Park with many stops along Park Blvd., or take the San Diego Trolley to the City College transit hub where you’ll be less than a mile away. From there, you can be in Balboa Park in about 15 minutes by foot or in 5 minutes with a San Diego rideshare.

It’s also worth noting that free shuttles are provided from the San Diego City College lot, as well as from Downtown San Diego near City Hall and from Little Italy by the Green Line trolley stop.

Handicapped Accessible Parking

Paid lots at the Fleet Science Center and Natural History Museum are available for people with disabilities. Parking is $25 in advance and $30 at the event.

Tips for Attending & Getting Into the Holiday Spirit

As someone that’s really enjoyed Balboa Park December Nights in past years, let me share a few tips that will help you focus on the fun at this year’s event.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

Whether you choose to attend on Friday or Saturday, I really recommend planning to be at the festival after the sun goes down, as the lit-up displays are gorgeous and make for some great photo opportunities.

And don’t forget that you’ll be doing a lot of walking, so I’d suggest wearing comfortable shoes and clothes.

Animals and Alcohol

Service animals are allowed at the event, but due to heavy crowds and lots of noise, attendees are discouraged from bringing their pets.

Alcoholic beverages may not be brought into the park. They may only be purchased and consumed in designated zones, like at the Spirit Garden and Specialty Bar.

Other Awesome Things to Do in Balboa Park

Balboa Park is one of my favorite locations in all of San Diego!

Why not visit the Balboa Park museums or the world-famous San Diego Zoo while you’re here - plus, you can swing by the Old Globe Theatre to catch a performance of How the Grinch Stole Christmas! during the holiday season.

It’s one of our most recommended areas for taking advantage of attraction and museum admission discounts through the Go City San Diego pass, especially when you use our discount code GVSD5OFF.

For a cultural experience, I’d recommend the Timken Museum of Art and for an educational experience for kids of all ages, my family loves the San Diego Museum of Us.

What Other Family-friendly San Diego Holiday Events are Scheduled for 2025?

When it comes to family-friendly holiday events and attractions, San Diego has quite a few to offer!

Annual highlights for my family at some of our top attractions include Jungle Bells at the San Diego Zoo, Wild Holidays at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and SeaWorld San Diego's Christmas Celebration.

If you want a similarly festive event to Balboa Park's December Nights, I’d recommend the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights. Free and VERY San Diego feeling, we just wrote a comparison article looking side-by-side at these two uniquely San Diego holiday experiences!
