Celebrating Mother Earth – The San Diego Way

People, Food, Crafts at the San Diego Earth Day CelebrationDelicious Food at the San Diego Earth Day Celebration

Earth Day in San Diego always feels like a community-wide reset - a chance to celebrate the city's natural beauty, rich cultural mix, and the people working to protect our home.

First held on April 22nd, 1970, Earth Day has been celebrated on the same day now for more than 50 years. In San Diego, organizers are gearing up for several celebrations that our team at Go Visit San Diego team is excited to attend…and tell you all about!

What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is a global event that's dedicated to environmental protection, awareness, and sustainability.

Today, Earth Day is celebrated in more than 190 countries with events all about protecting our planet for generations to come. This is a challenge not just for San Diego or the states, but for the entire world.

When is Earth Day in 2026?

Earth Day this year falls on Wednesday, April 22nd, 2026 with many celebrations taking place the weekend before or after the official day.

How and Where Will Earth Day be Celebrated in San Diego in 2026?

Earth Day is celebrated through family-friendly festivals and gatherings that often include music, food, sustainable vendors, education, and much more.

Balboa Park is the heart of the festivities again this year, hosting two of the largest and most diverse celebrations in the region: WorldBeat Center's Global Earth Day Festival and the lively San Diego EarthFest.

What is the Earth Day Theme for 2026?

The 2026 international theme for Earth Day around the world is 'Our Power, Our Planet'. The theme is a call to action to support renewable energy sources, recognizing the power we have when we come together as a community.

San Diego's 2026 Earth Day Festivals

Spread over two weekends, you'll have a couple of really exciting Earth Day celebrations to choose from in 2026.

Both Balboa Park Earth Day events have that famously welcoming vibe, making Earth Day accessible whether you're an activist or just looking to spend a day outdoors with your family and friends. With that, let's have a look at San Diego's best Earth Day events!

1) San Diego EarthFest

Neighborhood: Balboa Park
Address:
Balboa Park Blvd and Presidents Way Lawn
Dates & Time: April 25th, 2026 | 11:00am to 5:00pm
Cost: Free

As San Diego's largest annual Earth Day celebration for more than 30 years, there will be a lot to see and do at this year's EarthFest, from vendors to live entertainment, guest speakers, family-friendly activities, and more!

When & Where is San Diego EarthFest 2026?

Set for Saturday, April 25th, 2026 from 11:00am to 5:00pm, this 6-hour FREE event will once again be the largest Earth Day festival in San Diego.

You will find the festivities in Balboa Park, specifically on the Balboa Park Boulevard and Presidents Way Lawn at Park Boulevard San Diego, CA 92101.

My best advice is to come early if possible and be ready for some crowds. Finding it won't be an issue as there will be signs leading you to everything you'll want to see and do!

What to Expect at San Diego EarthFest

EarthFest will cover the lawn with over a hundred sustainable vendors, conservation booths, food options, and activities for all ages. Look for activities including yoga and wellness classes and plenty for kids and even dogs. There will be live music on the Music Stage plus panel discussions and guest speakers on the Education Stage.

It's nice to know that a portion of profits will be donated to local nonprofit groups. The energy is always upbeat and hopeful - no matter your background, it's easy at this event to get swept up in the sense that we all have a stake in this city's future.

As a new activity listed on our guide to all the holidays in San Diego, if you can only attend one event this year, this would be my suggested celebration. It really offers something for everyone to enjoy!

2) WorldBeat Center's 34th Annual Global Earth Day Festival

Neighborhood: Balboa Park
Balboa Park Museums: WorldBeat Cultural Center
Address:
2100 Park Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101
Date & Time: April 19th, 2026 | 11:00am to 6:00pm
Cost: Free

The WorldBeat Center event, also part of our guide to all the holidays in San Diego, is annually beautifully eclectic, bringing together world music, indigenous ceremony, poetry, wellness activities, and hands-on garden projects. It's not just about environmental action, but also about nurturing cultural roots and honoring the intersection between earth stewardship and artistic expression.

Their lineup for 2026 feels uniquely San Diego, moving from reggae to samba to spoken word - all grounded in a true sense of purpose.

When & Where is WorldBeat Center's Global Earth Day Festival 2026?

The WorldBeat Global Earth Day Festival will take place on Sunday, April 19th, 2026 from 11:00am to 6:00pm. It will be held at the WorldBeat Cultural Center in Balboa Park.

What to Expect at WorldBeat Center's Global Earth Day Festival

As a new event to me personally, I'm excited to see the cultural performances, listen to the environmental speakers, and participate in the interactive garden activities.

If I know anything about this cultural center, their live world music will be incredible. Our whole team at Go Visit San Diego is excited to hear Jamaican artist, Kabaka Pyramid, one of the big names in modern roots reggae.

Local environmental organizations will also be there to share opportunities to get involved in helping the Earth. You'll want to keep an eye out for the all-vegetarian food court and multicultural & wellness vendors who will be set up at the event.

3) UC San Diego Earth Day Festival

Neighborhood: La Jolla
Address:
Sun God Lawn at 3035 Muir Lane, La Jolla, California 92093
Date & Time: April 22nd, 2026 | 12:00pm to 4:00pm
Cost: Free

UC San Diego will be hosting an Earth Day Festival and outdoor climate conversations on April 22nd, 2026, from 12:00pm until 4:00pm on the Sun God Lawn located on the UC San Diego campus. This free event will be open to the public, UC students, and staff. The first 1,000 people will even get a free plant-based meal.

You can expect more than 50 booths as well as climate talks, and a clothing swap. There will also be giveaways and workshops throughout the event so it should be a good time full of education and community.

What are Some Eco-Friendly Tips for Enjoying the Celebrations?

If you're looking for ways you can help the environment at the events, you can start by bringing an eco-friendly water bottle.

You can also feel good about enjoying local and sustainable food, which both events will offer. And if you use any containers at the events, be sure to recycle them!

How Can Families and Individuals Make the Most of San Diego's Earth Day Events?

I think one of the best ways to take advantage of these educational events is to listen and learn, taking home ideas for how you can better care for the planet. You can also look for opportunities to volunteer as a family.

As our founder Todd tells me, Earth Day in Balboa Park, and all of San Diego really, is a true reflection of our city - the music, community, and creative energy. It reminds us all of how connected we all are to the planet and to each other!
