Honoring Our Heroes in San Diego This Memorial Day

The End of the Flight Deck on the USS MidwayFestive Belmont in Bloom

Memorial Day welcomes in summertime fun, and it’s also an opportunity to pause and consider the sacrifices our brave military men and women have made. I personally appreciate the chance to stop and reflect on the gravity of what others have given while celebrating and appreciating our great country.

Whether you’re looking to honor Memorial Day traditions or take your family to celebrate the day with a fun 5k or a day at the theme park, there are a wide range of fantastic opportunities for celebrating Memorial Day in 2025.

What is the History of Memorial Day Ceremonies?

So we’re honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, but the question is when did we start celebrating Memorial Day ceremonies each year in late May. You might be wondering what the history is that’s led us to where we are today.

As someone with military members in my family that have served our country proudly, and with the strong military, especially naval history in San Diego, these are great questions!

Originally called Decoration Day in 1868, its roots can be traced back to just after the Civil War when communities would come together to decorate the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags. Grand Army of the Republic Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan said it should be on May 30th, moved by Congress in 1968 to the last Monday of May so families could have a three day weekend.

What Family-friendly Events are Happening in San Diego for Memorial Day?

I’m personally focusing on the family-friendly things to do this Memorial Day. I want to teach my kids what the holiday is all about. I also want to make some family memories as we kick off the summer season.

For us, the top family-friendly events are the USS Midway Legacy Week 2025 events, Kensington “Holiday at Home” parade & festivities, LEGO Festival at LEGOLAND California, and the Summer Movies in the Park viewing of Moana in Waterfront Park.

Those are my family’s top picks but there’s good news, there are even more family-friendly events taking place over the Memorial Day weekend! Also consider that since you can’t possibly do everything on the list in just two or three days, many of these events start over Memorial Day weekend but last through the summer which could make them incredible things to do for Father’s Day as well.

We’ll look at them all in detail on our list below!

Weekend Dates & Discount Tickets

Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 26th in 2025, but the weekend events start as early as Friday, May 23rd .

Some of the most popular events take place in theme parks and at San Diego’s top attractions, with the cost to attend included with admission. The best way to get the cheapest ticket to these attractions with Memorial Day events like SeaWorld San Diego, the San Diego Zoo and LEGOLAND California is with a Go City San Diego pass using discount code GVSD5OFF at checkout.

The pass bundles together admission to these parks and about 50 other attractions and museums to save you real money!

If you’re working with a tighter budget, there are also plenty of free and budget-friendly Memorial Day celebrations that my family loves! You can have a great time watching a parade, visiting the Vista Strawberry Festival or visiting the historic USS Midway, also part of the Go City San Diego pass, which is holding a very special Memorial Day event this year.

So there are a few great options for affordably celebrating Memorial Day, but no matter which you choose, you’re sure to have a lot of fun welcoming in the summer and recognizing our military heroes.

There will also be veteran meet-and-greets, a stirring performance by the Imperial Valley Master Chorale at 12:00pm Saturday, and a wreath-laying ceremony starting at 9:00am on Monday.

Our team at Go Visit San Diego agreed that this event may just be the ultimate Memorial Day event in San Diego in 2025, so we included it as part of our Complete Guide to All the Holidays in San Diego article as well.

The USS Midway is part of the Go City San Diego pass, so if you’re looking for a great way to save on admission prices, pick up passes using discount code GVSD5OFF for your family before you arrive.

The ceremony is completely free to attend and thus there are no tickets necessary. As a pro tip from our founder Todd, arrive early to secure a spot. Also, take the shuttle from Cabrillo National Monument to make finding parking easier.

This is one of my favorites, a “Strawberry Capital” celebration with a 5k run, pie-eating contest, live music, a fantastic kids zone, and plenty of berry treats! The festival, part of our complete guide to the best holiday celebrations in San Diego in 2025, is celebrating its 14th year, and just keeps getting better every time my family attends!

The Strawberry Run is a 5k, and there’s also a 1 mile or 1/4 mile kid option. My daughter likes to dress up in her favorite costume for the run, and she’s not alone! All races start and finish on the Vista Magnet Middle School track.

Start your Memorial Day off early with a delicious pancake breakfast. Then, sign up for the Miracle Mile Relay. Afterwards, enjoy the community parade of cars, plenty of live music, and a few cool pet events. There’s also a social neighborhood picnic with great food.

Belmont in Bloom is a spectacular carnival-style event held at the 100 year old historic Belmont Park.

My family loves the garden displays and fun rides at the beachfront amusement park. The floral workshops are also educational for anyone with a not-so-green thumb. Fun caricature artists and face painting keep the day vibrant with a kaleidoscope of color.

For Memorial Day and the other spring and summer festival dates, enjoy the rides, including Todd’s daughter’s favorite, the Giant Dipper, and save some room for a cotton candy or ice cream treat. This is a great way to enjoy the warm summer afternoons and spend a fun day with the family.

SeaWorld San Diego is the #2 attraction in the area for good reason! The rides, animal shows, food, and live events are special things my family always enjoys. For Memorial Day weekend, the park is going all out with live music, nightly fireworks shows over the bay, patriotic events, and daily flag ceremonies.

It’s tough to take in all that SeaWorld San Diego has to offer in one visit, so I purchased 2025 Fun Passes for my family. Passes provide us with admission through the end of the year, so we can go as often as we want.

If you’re just interested in a single day visit, your cheapest admission can be had with a Go City San Diego pass using discount code GVSD5OFF.

Tips for Attending Memorial Day Events in 2025

Whether you frequent San Diego Memorial Day events every year or are looking to try something new for 2025, here are some useful tips for having a great time and making the day stress-free.

Parking

Parking in the Gaslamp Quarter, Balboa Park and Kensington neighborhood is sometimes tricky, especially when you’re trying to attend a popular event.

Parking is easier at the theme parks, but you’ll be on your own for many of the parades and festivals.

Downtown San Diego Fred Electric Shuttle
Downtown San Diego Fred Electric Shuttle

Getting to the Memorial Day Events

When I attended my first event in San Diego, our team recommended using public transit. They suggested hopping on the San Diego Trolley to get to Downtown San Diego, or booking a rideshare like Uber or Lyft.

Another great option is the FRED electric shuttle service in Downtown. All these options can save you some cash and a lot of stress versus trying to find a parking space on the busy streets around the Memorial Day events.

Food and Hydration

When the Memorial Day events get busy and parades or fireworks distract you, it’s easy to forget to snack or grab water. Try not to do this! For my family, it leads to grumpy toddlers, teenagers, and parents.

Instead, pack a few granola bars, or take advantage of the food trucks at many of the festivals and parades. Bring your refillable water bottle with you. All of the venues on our list will let you bring one inside.

Honor a Vet

Memorial Day is fun and a great way to welcome summer, but it’s also a day for remembering our vets and honoring their service. Whether it’s a family member or a vet who you run into in passing, thank them for their service and sacrifice.
