San Diego Parks & Nature:
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park
San Diego is known for having year-round sunny blue skies and mild temperatures. While September is usually one of the warmest months of the year, 2025 has featured an unusual amount of rain as we head into the Labor Day weekend.
With all the recent rain you might be thinking that going for a hike might get rained out this year, but I have great news for you! The forecast over Labor Day Weekend is calling for highs in the low 80’s with overnight lows around 70 and rain chances below 10%! With such a favorable forecast, why not take your family on a hike!
I’d suggest a sunset hike at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park as a family-friendly easy option that offers maximum bang for your buck. The 3-mile mostly flat trail is cliffside, so keep an eye on your kids, but I can say from my many trips to the area that it is not a hard trail. As one of the best spots to catch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean, this is an awesome option.
Mission Trail Regional Park offers trails for all skill levels in over 8,000 acres of natural space, so that would be another good option, or for an ‘urban hike’ idea, head over to Balboa Park and explore one of my family's favorite parts of the city!
We wrote an article covering our favorite hikes in San Diego, so check that out for a full list of trails to explore.
Why It Made Our List
When you visit San Diego, or if you’re lucky enough to call it home like me, then spending time outside is what it’s all about.
I also of course love that minus getting to the trails and perhaps needing to park, hiking is a cheap and very affordable activity!
