I always look forward to the unique energy that fills Balboa Park during citywide holiday and themed events, and St. Patrick's Day in San Diego brings a festive buzz like few others!
While I personally love the spirit of St. Patrick's Day, the energy of a Saturday with my family in the cool spring San Diego weather, enjoying a lively parade and festivities, is something I'm really looking forward to experiencing.
Whether you're watching the parade roll by or soaking in the live music and food at the festival, it's one of those springtime experiences that really brings the San Diego community together. The mix of big, colorful floats, Irish dance, and all-ages crowds creates a one-of-a-kind atmosphere in the park.
The festival draws huge crowds each year, looking for a taste of Irish culture. And what better way to celebrate St. Patty's Day than the biggest event in town!

When is San Diego's St. Patrick's Day Parade & Festival in 2026?
The beloved annual St. Patrick's Day Parade & Festival is set to return to San Diego on Saturday, March 14th, 2026.
Be sure to mark down that the events will be on the Saturday 'before' St. Patrick's Day this year. With the big day falling on a Tuesday in 2026, the organizers decided to celebrate a few days in advance over the weekend.
Where Will the St. Patrick's Day Parade & Festival Take Place?
The parade will set off from Fifth Ave. and Laurel St. You can expect it to head north to Upas St., over to Sixth Ave., then south on Sixth Ave. to Juniper.
The St. Patrick's Day Festival will take place at Sixth Ave. and Laurel in Balboa Park. Don't worry though – it's been my experience that if you can just get close to the park there will be signs and crowds leading to the action!

2026's San Diego St. Patrick's Day Theme
I think it's cool that every year the organizers decide on a new, fun theme. For 2026, it's "Irish, Here, There, and Everywhere."
2026 Parade Chair Alli Haefner said that the theme is meant to celebrate the 'global presence and timeless joy of Irish culture – from the green hills of Ireland to the sunny street of Southern California and beyond.' She said that the theme was chosen with young people in mind, since they will be charged with carrying the traditions into the future.
With the vibrant theme to set the mood, all are welcome and encouraged to wear green to honor Irish heritage.
Celebrating Irish Businesses, Entrepreneurship & Culture
The festival isn't just a way to recognize Irish heritage, but also a showcase for local business owners.
Irish-owned businesses may not be as common in Southern California as they are on the East Coast, but there are still plenty in San Diego. In fact, Balboa Park's first St. Patrick's Day Parade was held right outside an Irish pub.
The festival has never lost that emphasis on Irish entrepreneurial spirit, keeping it at the forefront of the celebrations. You'll see lots of floats and booths created by locally-owned, Irish-inspired businesses, including many that honor Irish history and culture and its important role in San Diego's community.
A Volunteer-Driven Community Effort
The event is run by the Irish Congress of Southern California, who share a passion for Irish cultural heritage.
While sponsors and ticket sales keep the event growing bigger and better each year, community support is the backbone of the event, and it's what has kept it running for over four decades.
